This new critical edition of the Three Tales documents a paradigm shift in Flaubert studies, as it highlights the pivotal role of theological and patristic dimensions in Flaubert’s œuvre. Barbara Vinken reads the Three Tales in the light of their religious intertexts and shows how Flaubert’s tales tell us a whole other history of Christianity.

Il est établi que la littérature réaliste, et les romans de Flaubert au premier chef, imitent moins la vie que la littérature. Le fait qu’ils reprennent non seulement d’autres textes littéraires, mais aussi des œuvres d’art, n’a jusqu’à présent guère retenu l’attention. Or, outre des bibliothèques – réelles ou imaginaires –, ces textes mobilisent une riche iconographie provenant des musées, salons, églises et collections privées du temps de Flaubert.

Das Verhältnis der Renaissance zur Antike läßt sich am eindrücklichsten in all seinen Ambivalenzen an Rom illustrieren. Um Rom als Dreh- und Angelpunkt aller Hoffnung auf Veränderung kreist das Denken der Humanisten in Euphorie und Melancholie. Francesco Petrarca (1304–1374) schreibt als Vergil ohne Rom in weltreformistischer Perspektive gegen die Selbstvergessenheit Roms an, das aus dem Exil durch eine restauratio Romae zurückgeholt werden soll. Die Wiedergeburt Roms, die durch ein Überblenden von Stein- und Textcorpus in Petrarcas Schriften gelingen soll, ist das sine qua non einer geschichtswürdigen Geschichte.

Joachim Du Bellay (1522–1560) hingegen geht es in seinen römischen Gedichtzyklen nicht um eine Wiedergeburt Roms, sondern um dessen endgültige Grablegung. Das im Namen Roms geschriebene Versprechen unsterblichen Ruhms läßt er in den Worten der Alten zu Wort kommen, um sie im Wiederaufrufen zu widerrufen. Seine Gedichte illustrieren Rom nicht lebendig, sondern verewigen durch eine negative Poetik die unbelebte Todheit und fördern so römische Wahrheit zu Tage. Während Du Bellays römische Dichtung irdische Geschichte als Ent-täuschung (sic!) lesbar macht, erlöst Marguerite, Schwester des französischen Königs, Muse und Dichterin, als Nova Pandora von Roma Prima Pandora. Marguerite ist der von Du Bellay poetisch begründete Antitypus zu Rom, die jedenfalls für den Moment der Poesie von römischem Fluch befreit.

Le Flaubert réel establishes a new concept of realism in Flaubert research. This re-definition is the result on the one hand of an occupation with disciplines such as medicine and psychiatry. On the other, following Hegel’s definition of Romantic art and Auerbach’s studies on the gospel and realism, modern literature has its primal scene in the incarnation and crucifixion. It is born out of the spirit of an anti-christian Christianity, which turns out to be a metamorphosis of antique idolatries. Yet this progressive gestus of a critique of Christianity only provides one aspect. On the back of this irony, Flaubert establishes modern literature by unfathomably out-christianising Christianity beyond all secularisation.
