Is the world en route to becoming a linguistic colony of the United States? Or is this dramatic view an exaggeration, and there is no danger to linguistic diversity at all? The German language is at the center of an intensive debate on this issue. Its position in the world is under increasing pressure due to the growing importance of (American) English as the language of globalization. The articles in this volume deal with the national and international position of German in relation to English, language policies, the future of German as a language of science, German in the USA, and the intellectual and aesthetic dimensions of encountering a foreign language. They present critical assessments addressing the dangers for the future of languages other than English, as well as positions which perceive the growing importance of English as a challenge and resource rather than as a threat.

Gerade die Kulturgeschichte des Frosches, in dem der Mensch sich selbst nicht wie im Affen narzisstisch wiederzuerkennen vermag, liest sich wie ein Spiegelbild der Geschichte der Zivilisation und ihrer gefährlichen Entfremdung von der Natur: Vom magischen Fruchtbarkeitssymbol in den frühen Kulturen wurde der Frosch im christlichen Mittelalter zum Inbegriff des Bösen und Hässlichen umgedeutet - um schließlich in der wissenschaftlich-technischen Welt als Labortier vernutzt und im ökologischen Desaster vom Aussterben bedroht zu werden. Doch auf dem Höhepunkt der Öko-Krise gibt die Kulturgeschichte des Frosches auch Anlass zur Hoffnung: Im Tierbild der Gegenwart wird der »Ökofrosch« zum Totemtier der Umweltbewegung. Ist er das Zeichen für das Aufbrechen eines neuen, eines wahrhaft ökologischen Zeitalters?Die Kulturgeschichte des Frosches gibt uns nicht weniger zu denken als die Zukunft der Natur.

Der Blick auf den Kriegsdiskurs von seinen Anfängen in Mesopotamien bis zu den intelligenten Waffen in Cyberwar und Drohnenkrieg zeigt, dass Krieg aus militärischem Kampf und kulturellem Diskurs besteht.Militärgeschichte fetischisiert die Fakten, die Kulturgeschichte des Kriegs dagegen baut sie in ein Netz aus Bedeutungen ein. Erst so geraten Begeisterung, Angst, Grausamkeit und Grauen als Elemente des Kriegs in den Blick. Und erst so wird das Netz aus Symbolen, Handlungen und Bedeutungen beschreibbar, aus denen jede Erinnerung die Wirklichkeit des Kriegs konstruiert. Es ist der Blick auf Erlebnis, Ethik, Subjektivität und Identität, der die Kontinuität von Krieg über 3000 Jahre Kriegsgeschichte bis in die Gegenwart erweist. Daraus ergibt sich nicht weniger als das Erfordernis einer zu schreibenden Gefühlsmoral um die Frage: Dürfen Soldaten überhaupt töten?
