La época actual se caracteriza por la intensificación y el aumento en la heterogeneidad de los desplazamientos. Esos movimientos han tenido y tienen diferentes causas, moti­vaciones y duraciones: dentro de una amplia gama de prácticas de movilidad puede distinguirse aquellas vinculadas a las migraciones laborales o provocadas por fenómenos naturales, o con de estudio, y de Frente a estudios tos revisado métodos tradicionales, y han elaborado nuevos enfoques analí­ticos para examinar problemáticas asociadas al viaje, al traslado y al movimiento. La Geografía no ha escapado a esta situación. Este libro reúne diversos estudios que abordan el papel de los desplazamientos en la configuración de lugares en tiempos pasados y presentes. En el marco de los procesos de deste­rritorialización y reterritorialización del capital, la reflexión sobre las prácticas de los viajeros, de los turistas y de los mi­grantes, ofrece elementos para construir una Geografía Cultu­ral que encuentre así sus bases en el desplazamiento y no sólo en el sedentarismo o, en todo caso, en la yuxtaposición de am­bas prácticas, donde, en términos de James Clifford, importan no sólo las raíces sino también las rutas.
