El presente libro analiza los multiples sentidos y significados que se produjeron, transmitieron, interpelaron, objetaron y pusieron en circulacion a la hora de describir, narrar e interpretar la muerte, el funeral y/o la biografia postuma de algunos de los deportistas argentinos mas populares de los ultimos cien anos. En una inacabada e incompleta lista de celebres deportistas muertos, los trabajos aqui reunidos, focalizan la atencion descriptiva, analitica y hermeneutica en el deceso de Jorge Newbery, Justo Suarez, Jose Maria Gatica, Juan Galvez, Oscar Natalio Bonavena, Carlos Monzon y Diego Armando Maradona. Sus muertes, funerales y/o biografias postumas fueron y, continuan siendo, interpelados por distintos actores de la vida nacional, delimitando y produciendo un particular panteon deportivo argentino, que los incluye, pero al mismo tiempo los excede. Los trabajos indagan mas alla del universo kinetico, tecnico-tactico, deportivo y agonistico. Mas bien, conceptualizan a los rituales, los discursos y las practicas mortuorias como espacios materiales y simbolicos privilegiados donde identificar y comprender ciertas logicas, agentes, actores y grupos sociales en pugna. Pablo Ariel Scharagrodsky es Profesor de Educacion Fisica (Universidad Nacional de La Plata [UNLP]), Profesor y Licenciado en Ciencias de la Educacion (UNLP) y Doctor en Ciencias Sociales y Humanas (Universidad Nacional de Quilmes [UNQ]). Entre sus libros se destacan las compilaciones Hombres en Movimiento. Deporte, cultura fisica y masculinidades en la Argentina, 1880-1970 (2021); Mujeres en Movimiento. Deporte, cultura fisica y feminidades, Argentina, 1870-1980 (2016) y Miradas medicas sobre la cultura fisica en Argentina, 1880-1970 (2014). Cesar R. Torres es Profesor de Educacion Fisica (Instituto Nacional de Educacion Fisica Dr. Enrique Romero Brest), Diplomado Superior en Ciencias Sociales (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales) y Doctor en Filosofia e Historia del Deporte (The Pennsylvania State University). Su libro mas reciente es Olympic Knowledge-Essential Readings Series (2024, compilado con Tracy Taylor y Stephan Wassong). En 2022 tradujo (con Francisco Javier Lopez Frias) el libro de Bernard Suits La cigarra: los juegos, la vida y la utopia.
