From the beginning of his career, Swiss theologian Karl Barth (1886-1968) was often in conflict with the spirit of his times. Translating Religion advances thinking about translation as a critical category in religious studies, combining theoretical reflection about processes of translation in religion with focused case studies that are international, interdisciplinary, and interreligious. By operating with broad conceptions of both religion and translation, this volume makes clear that processes of translation, broadly construed, are everywhere in both religious life and the study of religion; at the same time, the theory and practice of translation and the advancement of translation studies as a field has developed in the context of concerns about the possibility and propriety of translating religious texts. The nature of religions as living historical traditions depends on the translation of religion from the past into the present. Interreligious dialogue and the comparative study of religion require the translation of religion from one tradition to another. Understanding the historical diffusion of the world’s religions requires coming to terms with the success and failure of translating a religion from one cultural context into another. Contributors ask what it means to translate religion, both textually and conceptually, and how the translation of religious content might differ from the translation of other aspects of human culture. This volume proposes that questions on the nature of translation find particularly acute expression in the domains of religion, and argues that theoretical approaches from translation studies can be fruitfully brought to bear on contemporary religious studies.

In this volume the authors study the three major monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam to determine how they each approach their political roles. They discuss the relationship between religion and politics with a special emphasis: How and why do religions consider it normal to engage in political activities? What is the logic behind their aspiration to take on "political tasks"? The contributions consider the political self-image of these religions and compare them to external perception thereof from a nonreligious perspective.

The encyclopaedic aspect of Barth's theology, i.e. its claim to include dogmatics in all other disciplines, has rarely been reflected in research. This can come as a surprise, given that theology today is in a precarious position in terms of its unity and the mutual relationship of its sub-disciplines. Due to the increasing "subject science" the subjects are becoming more and more distant from each other. Cross-disciplinary efforts for the unity of theology are not often made, but are essential, also for the sake of church and religious practice. Karl Barth linked his Christocentric theology of revelation to the claim of a genuinely theological connection between the theological subjects, which is based neither on a uniform philosophical reference paradigm nor on a specific concept of religion. The articles in the volume consider the frequently criticized weaknesses of this approach, but also its strengths, specifically with regard to contemporary theology.

War früher unstrittig, dass diese Texte aufgrund einer "Offenbarung" als direkt von Gott gegeben und als "Wort Gottes" verstanden werden können, ist seit der Aufklärung und historisch-kritischer Methoden die Normativität dieser Texte fraglich geworden.Inwiefern können Glaubende diese Texte als "Wort Gottes" verstehen, ohne in einen "Offenbarungspositivismus" zu verfallen? Wie können sich Religionen bei ethischen Themen oder gesellschaftlichen Positionierungen auf diese Texte aus der Vergangenheit beziehen? Kann der historische Abstand überhaupt überbrückt werden, oder sind diese Texte nur noch aus "rein historischen" Gründen von Interesse?Der Band diskutiert diese Fragen angesichts neuerer Schrifthermeneutik der drei großen monotheistischen Religionen in der Perspektive aufgeklärter Normativität.
