Urban Authenticity and Heritage explores the contested notion of “urban authenticity” in European cities after 1945. It examines how buildings, neighbourhoods, and cultural practices are perceived as “authentic” — and why these claims matter.From post-war reconstruction to contemporary urban transformations, the book shows that authenticity is not fixed but a dynamic process shaped by social actors, political agendas, and collective memory. The contributors move beyond traditional heritage frameworks to analyse how authenticity is constructed through debates, representations, and practices of “authentification.” They reveal the role of citizens, institutions, media, and tourism in shaping places and traditions as symbols of identity and belonging. In doing so, the volume challenges essentialist understandings of heritage, presenting authenticity as relational, negotiated, and deeply embedded in changing urban contexts.Bridging urban history and critical heritage studies, the book offers new insights into the cultural, political, and emotional dimensions of cities. It demonstrates how claims to authenticity influence urban planning, identity formation, and the reimagining of Europe’s urban past and future. Until the end of the Cold War in 1990, building projects and architectural icons played an important role in the self-portrayal of the competing systems. However, as the current research shows, we also find a large variety of forms of cooperation between the East, the South, and the West, not to forget the manifold cross-border entanglements within the South or the East. This book explores the intersection of two strands of research. On the one hand, interaction in the field of architecture and construction between actors from socialist countries and from countries of the Global South have increasingly won interest amongst historians of architecture and planning. On the other hand, in the context of the strongly emerging Cold War Studies, scholars have explored cooperation and circulation across the Iron Curtain with a focus on economic and research planning. This book connects perspectives of planning, construction and architectural design with those on economic interests and conflicts in projects and networks. Furthermore, it opens the view to the hubs of communication and exchange, and on patterns of longterm transformation and appropriation of architecture.

Aus Sicht der Städte und ihrer Bewohner war die Epoche des Sozialismus, so scheint es, eine Periode des Niedergangs, der politischen Entmündigung und der Mangelverwaltung. Kommunalpolitische Praxis und Alltagsleben standen jedoch nicht ausschließlich im Banne der Herrschaft von Partei und Zentralregierung, von Konsum­engpässen und baulichem Verfall. Vielmehr spielten sich innerhalb des zentralistischen Machstaates zahlreiche Fälle von städtischer Selbstbehauptung, Ressourcensicherung und netzwerkartiger Kooperation jenseits formeller Hierarchien ab.Die Autoren des Bandes verbinden die Analyse von Grundsatzfragen, wie z.B. der von zentralen Vorgaben abweichenden "Eigenlogiken" in der Stadtentwicklung, mit der Rekonstruktion konkreter Projekte und Probleme, bis hin zu halblegalen Bauvorhaben und informellen Öffentlichkeiten. Neben DDR-Städten werden auch osteuropäische bzw. sowjetische Entwicklungslinien analysiert und Fragen der historischen Verortung sozialistischer Städte in epochenübergreifender Perspektive diskutiert.

Städtische öffentliche Räume sind ein Spiegelbild gesellschaftlichen Wandels und wurden in den letzten zehn Jahren wiederholt zur Bühne politischer Bewegungen und Revolutionen. Bereits im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts versuchten Planer und Politiker zunehmend, sie gezielt zu gestalten und zu kontrollieren, um damit auf die Stadtgesellschaft einzuwirken. Bürger besetzten sie in vielfältiger Weise als Lebensraum, politische Bewegungen nutzten sie als Bühne und Kampfplatz. Die Planung und Aneignung städtischer öffentlicher Räume kann daher als ein Seismograph der Urbanisierungs- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts gelesen werden – bis hinein in die Gegenwart, wie zuletzt die Kämpfe um die öffentlichen Stadträume von Tunis über Istanbul bis Kiew gezeigt haben. Die Beiträger des Bandes analysieren in transnationaler Perspektive anhand historischer und aktueller Beispiele die Dimensionen der Planung, baulichen Umgestaltung, Nutzung und Aneignung solcher Räume durch die Stadtbewohner.

Rudolf Bernhardt (1925–2021) geriet Anfang Mai 1945 als 20-jähriger Soldat bei Potsdam in sowjetische Kriegsgefangenschaft und durchlebte zwei Jahre in verschiedenen Arbeitslagern nordöstlich von Moskau. Seine in den Lagern entstandenen Notizen fasste er 1947/48 zu einem Manuskript zusammen. Sie protokollieren den von härtesten Lebensbedingungen, Krankheit und Tod bestimmten Alltag der Kriegsgefangenschaft. Teilweise Tag für Tag schildert er die Einzelheiten der Arbeit in den Wäldern, Probleme von Unterbringung und Ernährung sowie Verhaltensmuster und Überlebensstrategien der Gefangenen im sowjetischen Lagerregime.Das 1948 abgeschlossene Manuskript erscheint in unveränderter Form und weist gegenüber vergleichbaren autobiographischen Berichten eine präzise und nüchterne Beobachtung und Sprache aus der Perspektive eines jungen, einfachen Soldaten auf. Ein Nachwort von Prof. Dr. Christoph Bernhardt stellt die Tagebuchaufzeichnungen in den Zusammenhang anderer Berichte aus sowjetischer Kriegsgefangenschaft und der Biographie des Autors, der sich in der Bundesrepublik als führender Völkerrechtler und langjähriger Vize-Präsident des Europäischen Gerichtshofs für Menschenrechte einen Namen machte.
