Im deutschen Sprachraum ist Augustinus'' ''De civitate dei'' bislang selten präzise interpretiert worden, und dies, obwohl es sich um ein Schlüsselwerk der antiken wie der mittelalterlichen Ethik, der Staats- und der Geschichtsphilosophie handelt. Sein Einfluss ist so erheblich, dass man das Staatsdenken des Mittelalters als „Politischen Augustinismus“ bezeichnen könnte. Im Mittelpunkt des Werks steht die Unterscheidung zweier ethischer Grundorientierungen, die u. a. zu einer pointierten Zwei-Reiche-Lehre und zu einer markanten Geschichtsinterpretation ausformuliert werden. Der vorliegende Band, der Beiträge von Fachleuten aus dem In- und Ausland vereinigt, will eine detaillierte argument- wie quellenbezogene Analyse des „großen und schwierigen Werkes“ (wie Augustinus selbst sagt) bieten.

Die „Gesetze“ („Nomoi“) sind Platons spätester und umfangreichster Dialog. Bei seinem Tod waren die zwölf Bücher stellenweise unvollendet. Aber nicht nur deswegen bildet die Schrift eine interpretatorische Herausforderung. Die „Gesetze“ weichen zudem in vielen Hinsichten von den Lehren ab, die uns aus den früheren Dialogen vertraut sind. Primär ist der Dialog der Politischen Philosophie gewidmet: Es geht um die Grundlagen zur Gründung einer idealen Stadt namens Magnesia, um Fragen der Gesetzesordnung, der Ämter, der Erziehung, der Rolle von Männern und Frauen, um Strafrecht, den Umgang mit Geld, die Theologie sowie Komödie und Tragödie. Dass die Forschung zu den „Gesetzen“ in den letzten Jahren viele neue Facetten erschlossen hat, spiegelt der vorliegende Band, der Originalbeiträge von 13 anerkannten Platon-Experten versammelt.

Kants Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten aus dem Jahr 1785 stellt einen der wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Texte der gesamten Philosophiegeschichte dar. Zentrale Aufgabe der Grundlegung ist die Entwicklung und Begründung eines Moralprinzips; Kant erfüllt diese Aufgabe mit seiner berühmten Lehre vom Kategorischen Imperativ. Auch für professionelle Ethiker der Gegenwart enthält der Text zahlreiche Anknüpfungs- und Abstoßungspunkte. Die Grundlegung ist bereits seit langem das Objekt intensiver Interpretations- und Kommentierungsarbeiten. Die Vielzahl innovativer Forschungen aus den vergangenen 10 bis 20 Jahren zeigt jedoch, dass sich immer noch bedeutende Fortschritte in unserem Verständnis der Schrift erzielen lassen. Gerade im angelsächsischen Sprachraum gibt es wichtige neuere Entwicklungen.

Führende Fachleute der internationalen Kant-Forschung reflektieren in Beiträgen in englischer Sprache den aktuellen Forschungsstand und machen neue Gesichtspunkte geltend, die der Deutung der Grundlegung frische Impulse verleihen.

Historically speaking, the majority of efforts in the study of ancient Greek physics have traditionally been devoted either to the analysis of the surviving evidence concerning Presocratic philosophers or to the systematic examination of the Platonic and the Aristotelian oeuvre. The aim of this volume is to discuss the notion of space by focusing on the most representative exponents of the Hellenistic schools and to explore the role played by spatial concepts in both coeval and later authors who, without specifically thematising these concepts, made use of them in a theoretically original way. To this purpose, renowned scholars investigate the philosophical and historical significance of the different conceptions of space endorsed by various thinkers ranging from the end of the Classical period to the middle Imperial age. Thus, the volume brings to light the problematical character of the ancient reflection on this topic.

The reason for this is obvious: the concepts of ‘values’ and ‘goods’ are part of the eudaimonistic tradition, and he famously criticizes eudaimonism for its flawed ‘material’ approach to ethics. But he uses, on several occasions, the traditional teleological language of goods and values. Especially in the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant develops crucial points on this conceptual basis. Furthermore, he implicitly discusses issues of conditional and unconditional values, subjective and objective values, aesthetic or economic values etc. In recent Kant scholarship, there has been a controversy on the question how moral and nonmoral values are related in Kant’s account of human dignity. This leads to the more fundamental problem if Kant should be seen as a prescriptvist (antirealist) or as subscribing to a more objective rational agency account of goods. This issue and several further questions are addressed in this volume.
