Hesiod’s concept of a Golden Age, together with analogous myths – Babylonian, Egyptian, Hebrew, etc. – speak to the psychic appeal, perhaps even deep-rooted need, for humans to conceive alternate worlds free from the anguish, toil, and dangers of the one they inhabit. Classical poets and philosophers explored the myth; the Middle Ages imagined it as the land of Cockaigne; Early Modern dramatists incorporated it; Romantic poets and nineteenth-century writers imagined it in various guises. This volume explores the configuration presented by Hesiod and the history of its reception and transformation in European literature and culture. The chapters study how texts written in specific historical moments of European history reshape elements of the myth to explore contemporary issues of concern. The book addresses these issues of cultural hybridization, and, from a transhistorical perspective, provides new insights into the dynamics of epochal shifts. It also looks at similar configurations in non-Western civilizations (China), which complements the spectrum of contributions that covers periods from classical antiquity to the Age of Goethe.

Die Frage nach der Vollkommenheit ist seit der Antike grundlegend für Kunst und Literatur. Als Ideal, das seine Unerreichbarkeit stets mitthematisiert, entfaltet Vollkommenheit eine produktive Dynamik und eröffnet den Künsten Möglichkeiten ästhetischer Reflexion sowie einen symbolischen Raum für die Aufnahme und Verwandlung philosophischer Ideen. Die Beiträge des Bandes aus den Fächern Anglistik, Romanistik, Germanistik und Theologie betrachten dieses Zusammenwirken philosophisch-religiöser Vorstellungen des Vollkommenen mit seinen Figurationen in der Literatur ‑ von den Kirchenvätern über Gottfried von Straßburg, Dante, Petrarca und Shakespeare bis hin zu Andrew Marvell ‑, und sie fragen nach den Transformationen, die Vollkommenheitskonzepte wie Kunstwerke dabei erfahren. Der Band untersucht, wie Perfektion und Perfektibilität Literatur und Kunst bestimmen, wie sie ihrerseits von ihren Realisierungen bestimmt werden und welche Rolle das Bewußtsein der Kunst von ihrer eigenen Unvollkommenheit dabei spielt. Zur Diskussion steht nicht zuletzt, wie sich das transzendente Vollkommenheitsideal zur poetischen Diesseitigkeit der Texte und deren Strukturen verhält. Wie also wird der ontologisch-theologische Begriff des Vollkommenen in eine kunstimmanente Figur umgesetzt und übersetzt und wie verändert er sich dabei?

The category of vision is significant for Modernist texts as well as for the unfolding discourse of Modernism itself. Within the general Modernist fascination with the artistic and experimental possibilities of vision and perception this study looks at Virginia Woolf’s novels and her critical writings and examines the relation between visuality and aesthetics.

An aesthetics of vision, as this study argues, becomes a productive principle of narrative. The visual is not only pertinent to Woolf’s processes of composition, but her works create a kind of vision that is proper to the text itself – a vision that reflects on the experience of seeing and renegotiates the relation between the reader and the text.

The study investigates key dimensions of aesthetic vision. It addresses vision in the context of theories of aesthetic experience and identifies a semantics of seeing. It analyses functions of symbolic materiality in the presentation of boundaries of perception, modes of temporality and poetic potentialities. In exploring the connections between vision and language, it seeks to provide new perspectives for a reassessment of what occurs in Modernism''s relation to vision.

Der Band fragt nach dem Verhältnis zwischen spätantiker neuplatonischer Philosophie und Ästhetik und nach seinen historisch-kulturellen Verwandlungsgestalten. Mit welchem Recht konnte und kann von neuplatonischer Ästhetik gesprochen werden, welches sind ihre Grundzüge und ihre Relevanz für heutige Kunsttheorie? Das transdisziplinäre Thema versammelt philosophische und literaturwissenschaftliche Fachkompetenz (aus Altphilologie, Anglistik, Germanistik, Romanistik) zu einer Untersuchung, die systematisch auf das transformatorische Potential des Neuplatonismus, zugleich aber auf historisch-kulturell spezifische Transformationen zielt, die sich vor allem im Medium der Literatur vollziehen. Dabei spannt sich der Bogen von der Antike über Mittelalter und Renaissance bis zur Kunst der Gegenwart. Im breiten Spektrum der Standpunkte wird sichtbar, wie das Schöne als die Präsenz des Einen in der Welt sich in der Sinnlichkeit des Kunstwerks zeigt und zur Erfahrung bringt. Nicht zuletzt läßt sich dabei auch beobachten, daß von ihm selbst unter Bedingungen der Moderne offenbar nicht nicht gesprochen werden kann.
