"This collection brings together textual commentaries on thirty representative works of literature in Portuguese - either complete poems or extracts from longer works - ranging from the medieval lyric of the 13th century, through the poetry and drama of the Portuguese Renaissance, the great Realist novels of the nineteenth century, early twentieth century Modernism and post-1974 writings through to the present day, while also including examples of 19th- and 20th- century Brazilian literature. The authors chosen - poets, dramatists and novelists - are generally regarded as iconic writers, and the three most famous canonical Portuguese authors (Luis de Camoes, Fernando Pessoa, Jose Saramago) are featured, but the texts selected for commentary strike a balance between a focus on well-known and lesser-studied works. All the primary texts are reproduced in Portuguese, sometimes in original editions, with English translations added for the majority. The contributors variously explicate and contextualise the works they present, some focusing on hidden meaning, others on philological aspects of editing, others on their historical, intellectual and philosophical context, and others still on the process of translation itself. All, however, aim to develop the art of reading, for the benefit of scholars and students alike. Antigone''s Daughters? provides the first detailed discussion in English of six well-known Portuguese women writers, working across a wide range of genres: Florbela Espanca (1894-1930), Irene Lisboa (1892-1958), Agustina Bessa Luís, (1923- ), Natália Correia (1923-93), Hélia Correia (1949 -) and Lídia Jorge (1946 - ). Together they cover the span of the 20th century and afford historical insights into the complex gender politics of achieving institutional acceptance and validation in the Portuguese national canon at different points in the 20th century.Although a patrilinear evolutionary model visibly structures national literary history in Portugal to the present day, women writers and critics have not generally sought to replace this with a matrilinear feminist counter-history. The unifying metaphor that the authors adopt here for the purpose of discussing Portuguese women''s ambivalent response to female genealogy is the classical figure of Antigone, who paradoxically sacrifices her own genealogical continuity in the name of defending family and kinship, while resisting the patriarchal pragmatics of state-building. This monograph offers the first full-length account of the political intervention of the nineteenth-century journalist, novelist and translator Francisca de Assis Martins Wood (1802-1900). Her unusual profile included several decades spent in England, which shaped her perception of Portugal. Why then was her intriguing life-story not examined earlier? And why did mid-nineteenth century female authorship remain neglected for so long in Portuguese cultural memory? After revisiting such matters with fresh eyes, the focus turns to the pioneer weekly periodical that Wood headed for two years, A Voz Feminina, later rebranded O Progresso.
Crucially, during an age when the transnational circulation of ideas became amplified through the press, the cosmopolitan Wood cultivated strategic connections with early suffragists across Europe. In a string of remarkable editorials, she tackled Church hegemony and pushed for women’s rights. Her daring anticlerical thinking in the late 1860s, which anticipated an agenda more readily associated to this day with the work of Eça de Queirós, stands out for the sheer modernity of its gender analysis. One hundred and fifty years on, this study uncovers the backlash against Wood’s progressive views, led by another Lisbon-based periodical, Bem Público [The Public Good], and reclaims this salient public intellectual as a worthy precursor of Portuguese first-wave feminism.

In The Late Postcolonial Condition, Emanuelle Rodrigues dos Santos counters the perception of the backlash against postcolonial studies by proposing a reconfiguration of its paradigms for studying the African literatures of Portuguese-speaking countries. In doing so, she explores the interpretative perspectives of the longue durée of the past to understand the different levels of coloniality in the studies of the literatures of the Global South, with an emphasis on a main theme in African literatures in the twenty-first century: the role of the nation-state in the contemporary juncture of each postcolonial context. This book is an important contribution to contemporary literary studies, especially to the literatures of Portuguese-speaking Africa that are still peripheral to hegemonic anglophone scholarship. It brings valuable insights into postcolonial studies and debates around identity and narration of the nation in African literatures through the conceptualisation of late postcoloniality.

This book provides a unique portrait of the late postcolonial condition in the twenty-first century, shedding new light on complex national and transnational dynamics in the development of postcolonial states in the aftermath of independence. This analysis of fictional narratives from Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe establishes a much-needed critical reassessment of the theoretical framework of postcolonial studies used to trace the development of key tropes within these national literary systems, including nation building, the role of violence and economic exploitation in the postcolonial age. Engaging with a selection of works published at the turn of the millennium by authors such as José Eduardo Agualusa, João Paulo Borges Coelho, Evel Rocha, Filomena Embaló and Albertino Bragança, this study considers the impact of relevant aesthetic, cultural, political and economic circumstances to propose the concept of late postcolonial condition to define their contemporary postcolonial experience.

The filmography representing the ‘Portuguese Orient’ during the Estado Novo (1933–1974) is scarce and late, employing a simplified Luso- tropicalist rhetoric that repeatedly actualises the myth of a vast, long-lost, territory. This book examines the impact of cinematographic representations of the former Portuguese territories in the Orient on socio-cultural memories and narrative identities, through a critical exhumation of the archives and analysis of existing filmography. The analysis reveals that films of the ‘Portuguese Orient’ depict this imagined community with a certain degree of vagueness. This is largely a consequence of the prolonged disintegration of the metropolis’ relationship with this imagined community, a relationship that was mainly based on projections (about their alleged Portuguese identity) and ruins. - Del 282 - Monografías A

The Portuguese Antonio Pedro (1909-1966) was a cosmopolitan and multifaceted artist; one of the pioneers of surrealism in Portugal, both as a visual artist and as a writer. He was involved in the London surrealist group in 1944-5. Today Pedro is perhaps best remembered for his steadfast opposition to Salazar's long dictatorship, initially as a BBC radio broadcaster in wartime London and, on his return to Portugal, as the director of TEP (Teatro Experimental do Porto) throughout the 1950s.Just a Story (1942) comes at the halfway point in his forward-looking transnational trajectory. Pedro lived in Brazil in 1940-1 and, while largely ignored up to now, his experience of modernity in the tropics included encounters with major Brazilian cultural players such as Mario de Andrade, Jorge de Lima, Jorge Amado, and Antonio Candido. Just a Story stands, up to a point, as a miniature Portuguese equivalent of the groundbreaking Brazilian rhapsody Macunaima: an iconoclastic novella- or a novel, if we adopt the label Pedro bestowed on his creation simply ‘because he felt like it'. Illustrated by the author, it combines surrealist tendencies with the irreverent streak that so frequently distinguished Brazilian modernism. Written predominantly from a first-person perspective, this surreal tale follows the amazing adventures of the protagonist, including his birth in the rural North of Portugal, his picaresque migration to the city, his uncanny love tryst with alluring Lulu, and his final homecoming and mind-blowing demise. To read it is to step into a child-like world of dreams and playful delight in the nonsensical. Religious conflict has existed for as long as humanity has been capable of articulating the experience of faith. Belief in a higher power – whatever its nature – has tended to go hand in hand with the desire to force, or at least persuade, the rest of the world to agree with the believer. Portugal is a country shaped by successive waves of occupation over the centuries, and by the religious transformations these have entailed. Indigenous Lusitanians and Celtiberians withstood invasions by the Romans, Visigoths and North African Moors, as well as visitations by Jews, Phoenicians and others, but all were eventually killed, driven out or obliged to convert to Christianity. This book investigates texts dating from the eighteenth century to the present and set in periods ranging from the third century BC to the present day, in which the encounter between Paganism, Judaism and Islam, on the one hand, and what in due course became the dominant Christian status quo, on the other, illustrates the former’s resistance to absolute erasure. The study focuses in particular on women as the locus of dissent at the heart of national and sexual politics.
