How can admissions officers, employers, and scholarship committees maximize the accuracy of prediction of individual performance while minimizing adverse impact due to group differences? Testing offers a straightforward solution to the first half of this problem. Tests are the best way to predict how someone will perform in school, in the military, in medicine, or while controlling airline traffic and flying a plane. Tests are also useful beyond personnel selection, such as for selection of a college major or courses. However, the other side of this problem is more complex. Using tests is always accompanied by group differences that could result in continued systemic discrimination by limiting opportunities for those who are marginalized. This book charts an approach to using tests that incorporates evidence, transparency, and societal values to maximize efficiency and fairness.

This volume examines the assessment of higher order thinking skills from the perspectives of applied cognitive psychology and measurement theory. The volume considers a variety of higher order thinking skills, including problem solving, critical thinking, argumentation, decision making, creativity, metacognition, and self-regulation.Fourteen chapters by experts in learning and measurement comprise four sections which address conceptual approaches to understanding higher order thinking skills, cognitively oriented assessment models, thinking in the content domains, and practical assessment issues. The volume discusses models of thinking skills, as well as applied issues related to the construction, validation, administration and scoring of perfomancebased, selected-response, and constructed-response assessments. The goal of the volume is to promote a better theoretical understanding of higher order thinking in order to facilitate instruction and assessment of those skills among students in all K-12 content domains, as well as professional licensure and cetification settings.

Today, like no other time in our history, the threat of misinformation and disinformation is at an all-time high. This is also true in the field of Education. Misinformation refers to false information shared by a source who intends to inform, but is unaware that the information is false, such as when an educator who recommends the use of a learning strategy that is not actually beneficial. Disinformation is false information shared by a source who has the intent to deceive and is aware that the information is false, such as when a politician claim that high-stakes testing will fix K-12 education when in fact there is no evidence to support this practice. This book provides recent examples of how misinformation and disinformation manifest in the field of education and remedies.

This book is intended to be sort of a Chicken Soup for the educational academic’s soul. But, in the spirit of the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), this book is more of a Bloody Mary for the AERA attendee’s soul. As you likely know, one of the many suggested cures for a hangover is a Bloody Mary (it may not cure the hangover and could make it worse – but it seems like a good idea). The AERA conference experience for the uninformed amateur is similar to a hangover – symptoms may include confusion, nausea, headache, fatigue, etc., but without the alcohol. This book has two goals. One is to help you to get more out of the annual experience most of us refer to simply as “AERA,” and less of the negative experiences. The second is to help the beginning academic to avoid the pitfalls the author has experienced and hopefully be more successful. To do this, chapters go back and forth between telling an academic story and providing academic advice.

Generative AI is transforming educational systems at a pace that challenges researchers, practitioners, and institutions to develop principled approaches to understanding, evaluating, and implementing these technologies responsibly. In response to this need, this volume synthesizes research on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in education from leading global scholars across disciplines. The book explores effective methodologies and frameworks for advancing research and applications of GAI in higher education and related domains while addressing new possibilities for both the research and application of teaching, learning, and assessment. It examines the ways in which GAI can be used to transform education within the context of risks, ethical concerns, and other potential negative impacts, addressing the significant new challenges GAI may pose for instructors, students, administrators and researchers.Key areas of coverage include:• Foundational frameworks for understanding GAI systems and their implications for educational research and practice• Empirical evaluation of AI tutors, agentic systems, and automated feedback against rigorous learning science standards• Innovations in assessment that expand what can be measured and at what scale• Applications and findings across K–12, higher education, health sciences, and workforce training, with attention to equity and institutional implementation• Ethical implications of GAI use in educational research and applicationsThe Handbook of Generative AI in Education is an essential resource for researchers, professors, educators, and graduate students as well as professionals and practitioners in instructional design, educational technology, educational psychology, health science education, teacher education, and educational practice and policy.
