We live in a much more turbulent world than we like to think, but the science we use to analyze economic, financial, and statistical events mostly disregards the world’s essentially chaotic nature. We need to get used to the idea that wildly improbable events are actually part of the natural order. The renowned Hungarian mathematician and psychologist László Mérő explains how the wild and mild worlds (which he names Wildovia and Mildovia) coexist, and that different laws apply to each. Even if we live in an ultimately wild universe, he argues, we’re better off pretending that it obeys Mildovian laws. Doing so may amount to a self‑fulfilling prophecy and create an island of predictability in a very rough sea. Perched on the ragged border between economics and complexity theory, Mérő proposes to extend the reach of science to subjects previously considered outside its grasp: the unpredictable, unrepeatable, highly improbable events we commonly call “miracles.”

Dryden's writings are studded with names, conspicuously those of his literary predecessors and contemporaries. He defined himself as a writer in relation to other writers, and in doing so was something of a pioneer professional man of letters: poet, playwright, critic, prose stylist, England's foremost verse translator, the first literary historian to provide a conception of periods, and what would now be termed a comparatist. This 1993 book looks at Dryden's literary relationships with Ben Jonson and with French authors (notably Corneille), at issues raised by the work thought to be his greatest by Romantic and contemporary readers, Fables Ancient and Modern; and at Samuel Johnson's definition of Dryden, whose biography in Johnson's Lives was the author's favourite. The book has implications for questions of literary reception, influence and intertextuality, as well as for the reputation and context of Dryden himself.

The proceedings at hand are the outcome of the conference for young sci- tists titled Facing the Multicore-Challenge held at the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften, March 17-19, 2010. The conference focused on topics - lated to the impact of multicore and coprocessor technologies in science and for large-scale applications in an interdisciplinary environment. The conference was funded by the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften and placed emphasis on the support and advancement of young scientists. The aim of the conference was to bring together leading experts as well as motivated young researchers in order to discuss, recent developments, the present status of the ?eld, and its future prospects the exchange of ideas, in a pleasant atmosphere that stimulates. It was the designated goal to address current issues including mathematical modeling, design of parallel algorithms, aspects of microprocessor architecture, parallel programming languages, c- pilers, hardware-aware computing, heterogeneous platforms, emerging archit- tures, tools, performance tuning, and requirements for large-scale applications. Thisbroadrangeofissuesisre?ectedbythepresentconferenceproceedings.The results of the presented research papers clearly show the potential of emerging technologiesintheareaofmulticoreandmanycoreprocessorsthatarepavingthe way towards personal supercomputing.However, many issues related to parallel programmingenvironments, developmentof portable and future-proof concepts, and the design of scalable and manycore-ready algorithms still need to be - dressed in future research. The youth uprising, now simply called “The Sixties,” was fed by one of the greatest booms in publishing history. The Underground Press Syndicate (UPS) began as a loose confederation of five papers in 1966, and within a few years swelled to over 500 across the world, reaching millions of readers. They “spread like weed,” said the UPS director, weed-dealer, and eventual founder of High Times, Tom Forcade. The metaphor was apt: the UPS spurred the legalization movement, and weed became its totem. Weed was so pervasive it became a helpful means for government agencies to crack down on the UPS. Weed came to emblematize activist groups, and added a touch of flair to the mastheads of UPS titles. Weed permeated UPS pages, with gaps in text crammed with weed-inspired “spot illustratios”. Heads Together collects these drawings, shining a light on lesser-known names in the stoner-art canon, and many who weren’t names at all, as no signature was attached. It also compiles guides for growing weed from the period that were treated like contraband by the CIA. Activist-oriented, psychedelic rolling papers are showcased too. As pot now fast-tracks toward legalization in the U. S. and beyond, its once incendiary status is brought into odd relief. Pot’s profiteers of the corporate market today do not reflect those who fought for legalization, or the Black and Latino populations strategically criminalized for pot well before hippies were targeted, and long after. The art in this book speaks to a time when pot was smoked with optimism, as something potentially good for society and people, capable of activating profound transformation in the face of corrupt and powerful forces.
