The late nineteenth century witnessed unprecedented levels of urban growth as migration swelled the population of European cities to new heights. The resulting problems of overcrowding and inadequate civic utilities prompted the governing elites to look for new planning solutions to address the needs of an increasingly urbanised society. At the same time young people were also increasingly recognised as being adversely affected, both politically and morally, by the on-going process of urbanization. Church groups, civic authorities, middle-class reformers and political movements all tried to steer youth toward their own concept of respectable behaviour, concepts that often tended to share many similarities in their paternalistic emphasis upon social discipline. This volume directly addresses the confluence of these issues, the point at which the city government, youth and public space meet and the resulting problems and tensions that were often created. Whether it be the corruption of the rural youth flooding into the cities at the beginning of the twentieth century, battles between Hitler Youth and working-class gangs in Nazi Germany, hooliganism in 1950s Hungary or the appropriation of, or withdrawal from, public spaces by youths in more recent times, all the chapters in this book explore ways in which authorities and adult groups have sought to control young people, both directly and indirectly. Drawing on a broad selection of methods and disciplines, a wide variety of case studies from across Europe are used to investigate the interactions between youth and authority, and show how these adapted and changed over time and in different countries. By taking a fresh look at these issues within a comparative framework, this volume furthers our understanding of modern European society during the twentieth century.

Offering rich and new material, this volume moves beyond the easy conflation of youth culture and "Americanization" and instead sets out to show, for the first time, how international developments fused with national traditions to produce specific youth cultures that became the leading trendsetters of emergent post-industrial Western societies. It presents a multi-faceted portrait of European youth cultures, colored by differences in gender, class, and education, and points out the tension between emerging consumerism and growing politicisation, succinctly expressed by Jean-Luc Godard in his 1967 pairing of "Marx and Coca-Cola."

This edited collection examines how Western European countries have responded and been influenced by the apartheid system in South Africa. The debate surrounding apartheid in South Africa underwent a shift in the second half of the 20th century, with long held positive, racist European opinions of white South Africans slowly declining since decolonisation in the 1960s, and the increase in the importance of human rights in international politics. While previous studies have approached this question in the context of national histories, more or less detached from each other, this edited collection offers a broader insight into the transnational and entangled histories of Western European and South African societies. The contributors use exemplary case studies to trace the change of perception, covering a plurality of reactions in different societies and spheres: from the political and social, to the economic and cultural. At the same time, the collection emphasizes the interconnections of those reactions to what has been called the last ‘overtly racist regime’ (George Frederickson) of the twentieth century.

Das Buch untersucht am Beispiel der Körber-Stiftung exemplarisch die Rolle einer großen operativen Stiftung für die Gesellschaftsgeschichte der »alten« wie »neuen« Bundesrepublik – anhand von Themen wie Geschichtskultur, internationale Verständigung sowie Herausforderungen des demographischen Wandels. Der Untersuchungszeitraum erstreckt sich von der Gründung der Stiftung 1959 bis in die Gegenwart und bettet sich damit ein in jene großen Transformationsprozesse von der Industrie- zur »postindustriellen« Gesellschaft, von der Zeit der Teilung zum vereinigten Deutschland, von der bipolaren zur multipolaren Weltpolitik, die auch die Schwerpunkte der Stiftungsarbeit verändert haben. Detlef Siegfried zeigt, wie aus der Verbindung von wirtschaftlichem Interesse, bürgerlicher Selbstinszenierung und Altruismus gesellschaftliche Interventionen entstehen können, die dem Gemeinwohl dienen – und sich doch immer neu legitimieren müssen.

Als soziale Bewegung der Revolutionszeit zwischen 1917 und 1922 zog der Linksradikalismus eine Reihe von jüngeren Sozialwissenschaftlern an. Detlef Siegfried untersucht die Bindekräfte und Beziehungsnetze eines Intellektuellenmilieus, das am Kieler Institut für Weltwirtschaft entstand. Dessen Angehörige, Schüler von Ferdinand Tönnies und Bernhard Harms, beschäftigten sich mit den radikalen Bewegungen und Ideen ihrer Zeit und engagierten sich zum Teil entsprechend. Gleichzeitig bildete sich in Kiel eine rätekommunistische Strömung heraus, die durch ideelle und personelle Querverbindungen mit diesem Milieu lose verbunden war, aber auch eine Eigendynamik entwickelte. Intellektuelle wie Kurt Albert Gerlach, Richard Sorge, Alfred Meusel, Rudolf Heberle und Adolf Dethmann, die sich später in Wissenschaft, Politik und Wirtschaft einen Namen machten, hatten in diesem Mikrokosmos ihre fachlichen und politischen Wurzeln.

Die erste Biografie Ernest Bornemans zum 100. Geburtstag des berühmten Jazzkritikers, Dokumentarfilmers und Sexualwissenschaftlers am 12. April 2015.Borneman, Jungkommunist mit jüdischem Familienhintergrund, emigrierte 1933, sechs Wochen vor dem Abitur, nach London. Sein Geld verdiente er durch Jobs in der Filmbranche, als Journalist und Schriftsteller. Während des Krieges wurde er als »feindlicher Ausländer" inhaftiert und in Kanada interniert. Dort arbeitete er ab 1941 für das National Film Board und drehte eine Reihe von Dokumentarfilmen, darunter Propagandafilme gegen das »Dritte Reich". Gleichzeitig stieg er zu einem einflussreichen Jazzkritiker auf, der nach Kriegsende u. a. als Kolumnist des legendären »Melody Maker" arbeitete.Seit den späten 60er Jahren wurde Borneman zu einem der prominentesten Sexualwissenschaftler im deutschen Sprachraum, der die Idee der »Sexuellen Revolution" propagierte und damit Zustimmung ebenso wie Widerspruch erntete. Einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt wurde er durch seine Bücher (»Das Patriarchat" 1975), Sex-Ratgeberkolumnen in der »Neuen Revue" und zahlreiche Auftritte im deutschen und österreichischen Fernsehen.Mit seinen Themen Jazz, Film und Sex bewegte sich Borneman auf Feldern, an denen die spezifischen Sinneswahrnehmungen der Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts und die um sie entstehenden Deutungskonflikte deutlich sichtbar werden. Detlef Siegfried zeichnet Bornemans bewegtes Leben nach und stellt sein Wirken aus sinnesgeschichtlicher Perspektive dar.

Junge Kommunisten aus aller Welt beim »internationalen Lehrgang« der FDJ - zwischen Toleranz und ideologischen Konflikten.Die DDR war eine bedeutende Drehscheibe des internationalen Kommunismus. An der Jugendhochschule »Wilhelm Pieck« am Bogensee nördlich von Berlin bildete die FDJ seit 1958 junge Revolutionäre aus aller Welt im Marxismus-Leninismus aus. Sie war Schnittstelle einer alternativen Globalisierung, die sich gegen den Kapitalismus richtete und Jugendliche aus den osteuropäischen Ländern, aus Westeuropa und dem globalen Süden vereinte. So sehr die FDJ die »internationale Solidarität« propagierte, so sehr wollte sie allzu enge Kontakte zu den Internationalen unterbinden, die eine Vielzahl politischer Überzeugungen und kultureller Praktiken mitbrachten. Ihre Wahrnehmungen und Praktiken entsprangen einem postnationalen Selbstverständnis, das Diversität nicht als Problem, sondern als Gewinn betrachtete. The historical-cultural change in perspective in the historical sciences has altered the way we see the social movements of the 20th century, and hence also the youth movement. As a consequence, the archives dedicated to preserving the history of these movements are increasingly frequented by researchers. This is also the case with the Archives of the German Youth Movement (at Ludwigstein Castle) that has opened up for the documentation of new youth movements since the 1960s and to this end is seeking to expand exchange with scholars and archivists. Only through networks – linking up free-lance and established, full-time and volunteer workers, those interested from an archival and from an historical perspective – can work on the historical heritage of social movements be organised meaningfully.
