This is the fourth and last volume of parabiblical texts from Qumran Cave 4 and reveals once again the interest in biblical themes characteristic of Second Temple period Judaism, exhibited in many of the Qumran compositions. It is devoted to a small group of texts showing the rewriting, in different ways, of two biblical prophetic books, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Because of their fragmentary nature it is not clear how many copies or even compositions are reflected by the preserved fragments: at least five manuscripts of one composition of Pseudo-Ezekiel, and seven manuscripts of two different compositions of the Apocryphon of Jeremiah.

The present volume is one of the first to concentrate on a specific theme of biblical interpretation in the Dead Sea Scrolls, namely the book of Genesis. In particular the volume is concerned with the links displayed by the Qumranic biblical interpetation to the inner-biblical interpretation and the final shaping of the Hebrew scriptures. Moshe Bar-Asher studies cases of such inner biblical interpretative comments; Michael Segal deals with the Garden of Eden story in the scrolls and other contemporary Jewish sources; Reinhard Kratz analizes the story of the Flood as preamble for the lives of the Patriarchs in the Hebrew Bible; Devorah Dimant examines this theme in the Qumran scrolls; Roman Viehlhauer explores the story of Sodom and Gomorrah; George Brooke and Atar Livneh discuss aspects of Jacob’s career; Harald Samuel review the career of Levi; Liora Goldman examines the Aramaic work the Visions of Amram; Lawrence Schiffman and Aharon Shemesh discuss halakhic aspects of stories about the Patriarchs; Moshe Bernstein provides an overview of the references to the Patriarchs in the Qumran scrolls.

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls more than sixty years ago has revealed a wealth of literary compositions which rework the Hebrew Bible in various ways. This genre seems to have been a popular literary form in ancient Judaism literature. However, the Qumran texts of this type are particularly interesting for they offer for the first time a large sample of such compositions in their original languages, Hebrew and Aramaic. Since the rewritten Bible texts do not use the particular style and nomenclature specific to the literature produced by the Qumran community. Many of these texts are unknown from any other sources, and have been published only during the last two decades. They therefore became the object of intense scholarly study. However, most the attention has been directed to the longer specimens, such as the Hebrew Book of Jubilees and the Aramaic Genesis Apocryphon. The present volume addresses the less known and poorly studied pieces, a group of eleven small Hebrew texts that rework the Hebrew Bible. It provides fresh editions, translations and detailed commentaries for each one. The volume thus places these texts within the larger context of the Qumran library, aiming at completing the data about the rewritten Bible.

Der Band enthält die Vorträge eines internationalen Symposiums des Centrum Orbis Orientalis (CORO) in Göttingen aus dem Jahr 2007. Die Beiträger beschäftigen sich mit der Sprache und Literatur der Texte vom Toten Meer und konzentrieren sich auf das Phänomen der inner- und außerbiblischen Schriftauslegung. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wo und auf welche Weise die literarische Produktion biblischer Schriften in die Interpretation und Auslegung dieser Schriften im Rahmen von Paraphrasen (rewritten bible), Kommentaren (Pesharim) und Übersetzungen in andere Sprachen übergeht. Der Band behandelt somit die hermeneutischen Grundlagen, die die Lektüre und Rezeption der Hebräischen Bibel bis heute bestimmen.

Devorah Dimant versammelt in diesem Band siebenundzwanzig vollständig überarbeitete und teilweise neu geschriebene Aufsätze zu den verschiedenen Aspekten der Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer, die sie in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten veröffentlicht hat. Ein einleitender Aufsatz, der speziell für diesen Band verfasst wurde, gibt einen Überblick über den gegenwärtigen Stand der Forschung zu den Schriftrollen. Die Autorin behandelt zentrale Themen der Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer und reflektiert die rasche Ausbreitung und den Wandel der Forschungsperspektive auf die Sammlung in den Jahren nach ihrer vollständigen Veröffentlichung. Zu den behandelten Themen zählen auch Form und Inhalt der Sammlung als Ganzes, die spezielle Literatur der Gemeinde, der diese Sammlung gehörte, die aramäischen Texte und die apokryphen und pseudepigraphischen Werke, die darin entdeckt wurden. Der Band enthält auch Untersuchungen zu spezifischen Themen wie der Geschichte der Gemeinde, zu der die Schriftrollen gehörten, ihr Selbstbild sowie bestimmte Deutungen von biblischen Verheißungen und ihr Zeitverständnis.

Die in diesem Band versammelten Studien von Devorah Dimant untersuchen und analysieren jüdische Werke, die zur Zeit des Zweiten Tempels auf Hebräisch, Aramäisch oder Griechisch verfasst wurden, und erörtern deren Inhalt, Ideen und Verbindungen zu den Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer. Im Speziellen werden Themen in Bezug auf das aramäische Buch Tobit und 1 Henoch ausgearbeitet sowie die Verbindungen zwischen hebräischen Qumran-Apokryphen und den späteren apokalyptischen Schriften 4 Esra und 2 Baruch. Ein Kapitel über das Apokalyptische in Qumran führt einen neuen konzeptuellen Rahmen für das Thema ein. Gemeinsam bieten die Studien eine breitgefächerte und frische Perspektive auf die jüdische Literaturszene dieser Zeit, welche sich im Land Israel im letzten vor- und dem ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhundert entwickelte.

The volume consists of 27 surveys of research into the Dead Sea Scrolls in the past 60 years, written by 26 authors. An innovation of the volume is that it covers Qumran scholarship in separate countries: the USA, Canada, Israel, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Italy and the Eastern bloc. Each essay also carries a detailed bibliography for the respective country. Biographies of all the major scholars active in the field are briefly given as well. This book thereby exhaustively surveys past and present Qumran research, outlining its particular development in various circumstances and national contexts. For the first time, perspectives and information not recorded in any other publication are highlighted.
