The World Wide Web (WWW) and digitisation have become important sites and tools for the history of the Holocaust and its commemoration. Today, some memory institutions use the Internet at a high professional level as a venue for self-presentation and as a forum for the discussion of Holocaust-related topics for potentially international, transcultural and interdisciplinary user groups. At the same time, it is not always the established institutions that utilise the technical possibilities and potential of the Internet to the maximum. Creative and sometimes controversial new forms of storytelling of the Holocaust or more traditional ways of remembering the genocide presented in a new way with digital media often come from people or groups who are not in the realm of influence of the large memorial sites, museums and archives. Such "private" stagings have experienced a particular upswing since the boom of social media. This democratisation of Holocaust memory and history is crucial though it is as yet undecided how much it will ultimately reinforce old structures and cultural, regional or other inequalities or reinvent them. The “Digital space” as an arbitrary and limitless archive for the mediation of the Holocaust spanning from Russia to Brazil is at the centre of the essays collected in this volume. This space is also considered as a forum for negotiation, a meeting place and a battleground for generations and stories and as such offers the opportunity to reconsider the transgenerational transmission of trauma, family histories and communication. Here it becomes evident: there are new societal intentions and decision-making structures that exceed the capabilities of traditional mass media and thrive on the participation of a broad public.

Heidemarie Uhl war eine renommierte Wissenschaftlerin, Vermittlerin, Ideengeberin, Netzwerkerin und Projektleiterin sowie eine unermüdliche Mentorin, die jungen Wissenschaftler*innen unprätentiös half, ihren Weg zu finden. Für all dies soll diese Publikation eine Würdigung sein.Der vorliegende Beitragsband war als Festschrift für Heidemarie Uhl geplant und sollte ihr Mitte September 2023, rund um ihren 67. Geburtstag, übergeben werden. Mitte August erreichte die Herausgeber*innen völlig unerwartet und viel zu früh die Nachricht von ihrem Tod. Daher ist aus der "Festschrift für" trauriger- und schmerzhafterweise ein Band "in memoriam" Heidemarie Uhl geworden.Die Publikation mit Beiträgen von Kolleg*innen und Freund*innen, Wegefährt*innen und Schüler*innen setzt sich mit dem Forschungsfeld Uhls auseinander: den Erinnerungskulturen und Geschichtspolitiken. Dabei werden unterschiedliche nationale und internationale "Erinnerungsorte" (durchaus im Sinne von topographischen Orten) auf einer mentalen Karte beleuchtet.

Es sind Tausende Kinder, die von den 1950er Jahren an bis in die späten 1980er Jahre an die Innsbrucker Kinderbeobachtungsstation gelangten. 3.500 als erziehungsschwierig und verhaltensauffällig geltende Kinder – vorwiegend aus Tirol, Vorarlberg und Südtirol – wurden von den Jugendämtern, den Heimen und Schulen, aber auch von Eltern und Pflegeeltern an die psychiatrische Station gebracht. Über mehrere Wochen bis Monate mussten sie sich in der geschlossen geführten Station aufhalten: zum Zweck der Beobachtung, Behandlung und Begutachtung. Betroffen waren vor allem Kinder, die aus unterschiedlichen Gründen in die Aufmerksamkeit der Kinder- und Jugendwohlfahrt geraten waren, darunter überwiegend Kinder aus sozial benachteiligten Haushalten. Aber auch bildungsbürgerliche Eltern vertrauten ihre Kinder zuweilen der im katholisch-wertkonservativen Nachkriegstirol höchst einflussreichen Psychiaterin und Heilpädagogin Maria Nowak-Vogl an. Ungeschützt waren sie an der Station einer gewaltvollen Straf- und Korrekturpädagogik, drastischen medizinisch-psychiatrischen Kuren wie insgesamt einer aggressiven Pathologisierung ihrer Lebens-, Gefühls- und Körperwelten ausgesetzt. Meist verließen sie die Station mit einem psychiatrisch-heilpädagogischen Gutachten, das durch sein abwertendes – einem überkommenen Diagnoseinventar entlehntes – Vokabular im geringsten Fall kränkend war, im weit häufigeren Fall ihr weiteres Leben aber maßgeblich bestimmte. Für mehr als tausend Kinder bedeutete dies, erstmals oder erneut in ein Erziehungsheim zu kommen oder anderweitig fremduntergebracht zu werden. Zahlreiche Quellen und bisher unveröffentlichte Fotos und Materialien stellen die Grundlage der empirischen Untersuchung dar, stiften neue Zusammenhänge und eröffnen unerwartete Kontextualisierungen. Die Perspektive der ZeitzeugInnen – ehemalige PatientInnen an der Kinderbeobachtungsstation – und deren Aussagen erweisen sich als substanziell für das Verständnis der Rolle der historischen Kinderpsychiatrie und Heilpädagogik in der Region und darüber hinaus. Ihnen kommt das letzte Wort in diesem Buch zu.

Gedenktage eröffnen immer wieder eine öffentlich-mediale Arena für die Neuverhandlung des Gedächtnisses. Dabei verweist das zu Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts entstandene Format "Gedenkjahr" auf ein gesteigertes Interesse für die Auseinandersetzung mit einer traumatischen Vergangenheit. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde 2018 in Österreich ein "Supergedenkjahr" mit zwei Brennpunkten begangen: 100 Jahre Gründung der Republik Österreich 1918 und 80 Jahre "Anschluss" 1938. Die Ende 2017 geschlossene Koalition von ÖVP und FPÖ verlieh der Frage nach dem Umgang des offiziellen Österreich mit seiner Vergangenheit zusätzliche Brisanz. Die Analyse der politischen und öffentlichen Kommunikation im Gedenkjahr 2018 orientiert sich an methodisch innovativen Forschungsperspektiven: u.a. werden die offiziellen Social-Media-Einträge zentraler politischer Akteure mittels einer multimodalen qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse untersucht und das Austrian Media Corpus (AMC), eines der größten digitalen Text-Corpora im gesamten deutschen Sprachraum, in einem Digital Humanities-Pilotprojekt mit Text Mining-Methoden im Hinblick auf eine computergestützte, (semi-)automatische Erschließung semantischer Inhalte ausgewertet. Die Beiträge geben einen Einblick in die Debatten und Kontroversen des Gedenkjahres 2018, darüber hinaus aber auch in die neuen methodischen Potentiale einer Verschränkung zeitgeschichtlicher Fragestellungen mit Verfahren der Digital Humanities.Memorial days always offer a public-media arena for renegotiating memories. Here, the format "memorial year" created by the end of the 20th century refers to an increasing interest in dealing with a traumatic past. With reference to this, Austria celebrated a "Super memorial year" remembering the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic Austria and the 80th anniversary of the annexation to Nazi Germany in 1938. The contributions offer an insight in the debates and controversies surrounding the memorial year 2018. Furthermore, they present new methodical potentials of a connection of contemporary issues with methods of digital humanities.

One of the oldest phenomena in the history of mankind is migration, whether peaceful or violent, voluntary or forced, barely noticeable outfl ow or mass movements. In the 19th century, regional migration to frontier territories, as for example in the Russian Empire or the United States of America, was a natural object of research. In the 1960s there was renewed interest in migration history in Western Europe due to the increase of immigration. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the so-called Eastern Bloc, the history of borders came again into focus, leading to a new generation in migration history. This development was reinforced by the "summer of migration" of 2015. The history of migration to Austria, especially during the Second Republic, has long been a topic overlooked by historians, but received increased attention since the 1980s. The present volume presents research currently being done on the history of migration to or through Austria.
