Framing Bodies offers a unique insight into the disciplining, normative and identifying power of photography through the work of 15 artists. Photographic framings of the body inherently reflect issues of surveillance, the transgression of norms, labour conditions and racial discrimination. The represented works, spanning from the turn of the 20th century until today, indicate that these issues are continuously relevant - and perhaps more pressing than ever. The book includes works by distinguished artists such as Bolette Berg and Marie Høeg, Walker Evans, Ernest Cole, Nan Goldin, Annika Elisabeth von Hausswolff, Kent Klich, Adriana Lestido, Jorma Puranen and Christer Strömholm. Framing Bodies was produced in conjunction with the Hasselblad Center, and forms the second in a series of thematic books and exhibitions based on the Hasselblad Foundation Collection, Gothenburg, Sweden. The first book in the series is Still Life / Work Life, also available from Art and Theory.

Annika Elisabeth von Hausswolff's images are often based on the themes of spatiality, psychoanalysis, crime photography and global capitalism. She belongs to the generation of Swedish artists who emerged in the early 1990s, inspired visually by postmodernist art and theory and with a profound interest in the photographic image, manifested through a predilection for analogue technology. She uses staging and associative imagery as methods to create images where the boundaries between fiction and reality are fluid. Another distinctive feature of von Hausswolffs works are the spatial installations in which her photographs are often combined with sculptural elements such as window blinds and textiles everyday details from domestic environments that also appear within the photographs. Published in collaboration with Hasselblad Foundation on the occasion of the exhibition Grand Theory Hotel at Hasselblad Center in 2016.

Maria Friberg's work is characterised by her great interest in societal issues and a desire to depict the phenomena of contemporary life. Narratives about mans place in a world where the power of nature and culture is difficult to master emerge in her carefully staged images, the production of which often involves set designers, craftsmen, and others. References to art history, and painting in particular, frequently appear in Friberg's work, along with enigmatic spaces and plays on the aesthetics of light. This book gathers diverse examples from her body of work, telling stories that are both subversive and ambiguous in nature, and which draw on our inherent curiosity as viewers. Published in collaboration with Vida Museum, Borgholm, Sweden.
