This monograph provides an outlook for the translation in Europe during the Middle Ages. It has been one of the main activities for DHuMAR research project; as such, it is the first volume of a series focused on the history of Medieval translation.This volume takes the question of textual transmission from the beginning of the Middle Ages until the break of Humanism and relies on the contributions of renowned specialists on the subject.Each work has been arranged in chronological order: the starting point is the first translations carried out in France, then in the Anglo-Saxon world, in the German and Nordic languages, and finally in the Mediterranean Basin, the Iberian Peninsula and Italy.

Although the Western Roman Empire collapsed in the 5th century AD, medieval European culture was born from the ruins of its civilisation. In the field of wisdom, the Latin literary tradition accompanied and guided the different kingdoms in formation. This volume brings together the contributions of eight specialists on the survival of a literary motif in the Middle Ages and on seven ancient authors: the Trojan Materia, Aristotle, Diogenes of Sinope, Cicero, Valerius Maximus, Seneca, Boethius and Isidore of Seville, so that a panoramic view can be obtained of the influence of the ancient world on the European Middle Ages. The fruit of this collective work aims to be a useful tool for a university or specialised public that needs an up-to-date general picture of the reception and use of the classics in the Middle Ages, as it synthesises previous knowledge, presents new points of view and provides an updated state of the art for each of the subjects dealt with.

Como de forma explícita recoge su título, Revisitando a Berceo: lecturas del siglo XXI, este volumen reúne un total de quince artículos de la pluma de otros tantos reconocidos investigadores de la literatura medieval y de la obra de Berceo en particular, que vuelven a analizar, desde la perspectiva crítica actual, las complejidades del poeta riojano. Los distintos trabajos abordan –revisitan– tanto las cuestiones que forman parte de la historia hermenéutica de los libros mayores de la producción berceana (Milagros de Nuestra Señora, Vida de santo Domingo de Silos, Poema de santa Oria) y de los menos transitados por la crítica (Signos del Juicio Final), como las que se refieren a otros grandes testimonios del mester de clerecía (Libro de Alexandre, Libro de buen amor).Pero también son objeto de revisión crítica aspectos más generales o particulares de la obra de Berceo: los de su propia condición como escritor inserto en la atmósfera cultural de su tiempo, de la que recibe variadas influencias; los problemas que sigue planteando la métrica del mester clerical; la reconsideración de pasajes tan manidos de su obra como, por ejemplo, la famosa cuaderna que comienza "Quiero fer una prosa" o la interpretación del "Milagro VIII"; las características de la lengua de Berceo en la evolución histórica del español; o la utilización del espacio como concepto a la vez físico y moral.Completan y enriquecen el volumen, en fin, trabajos que hacen un balance general de las fundamentales aportaciones hermenéuticas del gran hispanista Brian Dutton a la obra de Berceo, así como el desvelamiento definitivo de una broma filológica en torno a un texto supuestamente debido a la mano del insigne escritor medieval.
