Narratives surrounding mental health are intertextually and culturally embedded in a constantly evolving web of narratives, whether it is in research and treatment practices in psychology and psychiatry, the professional categorization and definition of mental health issues, people's own definitions of mental health, or medial as well as artistic representations of different mental health states. Narrative and Mental Health: Reimagining Theory and Practice investigates the nexus between narratives and mental health from an interdisciplinary perspective, offering a dialogue between psychology and psychiatry and other fields such as social work, linguistics, philosophy, literary studies, and cultural studies. Contributors from various disciplines and countries across the globe address questions surrounding mental health and illness in individual as well as cultural stories while also attending to their mutual influence. Narrative interviews, narrative psychology, narrative therapy, diary writing, and psychodynamic processes are explored alongside oral history, news media, graphic novels, film, fiction, and literary autobiographies. At the same time, the volume acknowledges the potential limitations of these narrative paradigms, especially when coupled with normative expectations of truthfulness, coherence, and comprehensiveness. From here, mental health emerges as a dynamic concept that is subject to change over time and which deserves close attention both in research and practice.

Into the twenty-first century, millions of disabled people and people experiencing mental distress were segregated from the rest of society and confined to residential institutions. Deinstitutionalization – the closure of these sites and integration of former residents into the community – has become increasingly commonplace. But this project is unfinished. Sites of Conscience explores use of the concept of sites of conscience, which involves place-based memory activities such as walking tours, survivor-authored social histories, and performances and artistic works in or generated from sites of systemic suffering and injustice. These activities offer new ways to move forward from the unfinished deinstitutionalization project and its failures. Covering diverse national contexts, this volume proposes that acknowledging the memories and lived experiences of former residents – and keeping histories and social heritage of institutions alive rather than simply closing sites – holds the greatest potential for recognition, accountability, and action.

The Queerness of Psychoanalysis: From Freud and Lacan to Laplanche and Beyond is an exploration of psychoanalysis’ often complicated and fraught history with thinking about queerness, as well as its multifaceted heritage.Throughout the chapters, the contributors write about psychoanalysis’ relationship with queerness, the ways in which queerness is represented in the psychoanalytic archive, and how that archive endures in the present and creates various disruptive effects both within and beyond the clinic. Each chapter from the global cohort of contributors approaches queerness from a different angle: they consider the literary aspects of queerness’ presence in the analytic world; the clinical complexities of working with queer and trans people; metapsychological inclusion and exclusion of queerness, and many other subjects. Taken together these contributions constitute a decisive intervention into the psychoanalytic canon. They are an unabashed demand for accepting and furthering the representation and inclusion of queer, and in particular trans, people within psychoanalysis. It is a call for action to utilize and deepen psychoanalysis’ enormous explicatory powers and bring together voices that have so far been denied a unity of expression, while critically reevaluating psychoanalysis’ historical relationship to queerness. Each chapter proposes different ways of thinking and writing psychoanalytically, with many of the papers queering the format and forms of expression commonly found in academic writing, through their use of dialogues, conversations, or other experimental forms of writing.Written almost exclusively by analysts, scholars, and activists who identify as trans and/or queer, this important volume puts theory into practice by centering queer and trans voices.
