How can untranslatability help us to think about the historical as well as the cultural and linguistic dimensions of translation? For the past two centuries, theoretical debates about translation have responded to the idea that translation overcomes linguistic and cultural incommensurability, while never inscribing full equivalence. More recently, untranslatability has been foregrounded in projects at the intersections between translation studies and other disciplines, notably philosophy and comparative literature. The critical turn to untranslatability re-emphasizes the importance of translation''s negotiation with foreignness or difference and prompts further reflection on how that might be understood historically, philosophically, and ethically. If translation never replicates a source exactly, what does it mean to communicate some elements and not others? What or who determines what is translatable, or what can or cannot be recontextualized? What linguistic, political, cultural, or historical factors condition such determinations? Central to these questions is the way translation negotiates with, and inscribes asymmetries among, languages and cultures, operations that are inevitably ethical and political as well as linguistic. This book explores how approaching questions of translatability and untranslatability through premodern texts and languages can inform broader interdisciplinary conversations about translation as a concept and a practice. Working with case studies drawn from the francophone cultures of Flanders, England, and northern France, it explores how medieval texts challenge modern definitions of language, text, and translation and, in so doing, how such texts can open sites of variance and non-identity within what later became the hegemonic global languages we know today.

Northern Ireland stands out as having enacted historical positive change in abortion law, from an almost complete ban in the 20th century to the decriminalization achieved in 2019. This book documents and analyzes how this historical change was achieved. Each chapter is written by those directly involved in the long-fought battle to change abortion law - including those with personal experience of seeking abortions, activists, academics, legal experts, political actors, NGOs, and volunteers. In this, the first of two volumes, contributions focus on the legislative landscape of the process with particular emphasis on the importance of ‘feminist legal work’ - law-making influenced by the women most likely to be impacted by it.

Abortion remains one of the most politicized issues globally and whilst some countries such as the USA continue to experience restrictions to access to abortion, Northern Ireland stands out as having enacted historical positive change in abortion law, from an almost complete ban throughout the Twentieth Century to decriminalization achieved in 2019. This book documents and analyzes how this historical change was achieved. This, the second of two volumes, places emphasis on allies and support for abortion provision, illustrating how the movement has relied upon an intersectional network of social movement actors, NGOs and fundraisers to maintain momentum and inclusivity. It also focuses on the reality of abortion provision. Each chapter is written by those directly involved in the long-fought battle to change abortion law - including those with personal experience of seeking abortions, activists, academics, legal experts, political actors, NGOs, and volunteers. This interdisciplinary text will be of relevance to academics and students in the disciplines of law, policy, political science, and sociology, but also to organizers and policy makers in other global contexts and across other social justice campaigns.

‘Emma’s moving and beautifully written memoir shows us that running isn't about pace or marathons; it’s about reclaiming your joy, your strength and yourself' – Bryony GordonA book about running. And not running.Like many modern women, Emma Campbell has spent her whole life ‘running’: to keep up, to hold everything together, ‘running’ because the alternative, slowing down or (god forbid) stopping is actually quite terrifying. It took her third cancer diagnosis to discover the restorative power of slowing down – both in life and in her runs.In Running, Still, Emma truly learns how taking your time can be life-changing. Amid relationship breakdowns, cancer treatment, raising her four children (including triplets!) and caring for elderly parents, she finds the joy of a soul-boosting, recharging, gentle real-life run. Alongside her own journey Emma draws on the words and wisdom of other women: she shares slow miles with friends – including Bryony Gordon and the late Dame Deborah James – who are running on empty and considers why so many of us don't know how to stop ‘running’ and start truly living.Written by someone who isn’t particularly bothered about personal bests, runs staggeringly slow marathons and still doesn't know what splits are, this is a story about choosing a different pace. It’s about the elation that running can offer, and a reminder that there’s no rush.

The NATURA Global Roadmap for Urban Nature-based Solutions is the most comprehensive effort to date to assess the state of knowledge and practice of nature-based solutionS (NbS) in cities and urbanized regions around the world. As cities face escalating challenges — from climate change and biodiversity loss to public health crises and social inequities — the need for sustainable, resilient solutions has never been more urgent. NbS offers a powerful, adaptable approach, working with nature to tackle these interconnected issues while enhancing urban livability and ecosystem health. Though NbS are not a panacea, cities around the world are embracing them as a key component of sustainability and resilience investments. The Global Roadmap is the first comprehensive global assessment of urban nature-based solutions, built from seven Regional Assessments spanning Africa, Asia, Oceania, MENA, Europe, US-Canada, and Latin America—alongside a Global Synthesis Report and Summary for Policymakers.By bringing together scientific research, expert insights, and real-world case studies, the Roadmap offers clear, actionable guidance for decision-makers at every level. Its structure highlights the diversity of urban contexts while providing a cohesive global perspective to guide effective, equitable, and sustainable NbS investments for the future. The Global Roadmap draws on the expertise of regional leads, multidisciplinary teams, and global practitioners. From literature reviews and case studies to expert workshops and rigorous peer review, the assessment process ensures the final insights are both grounded in evidence and reflective of real-world practices. The result? A vital resource empowering policymakers, urban planners, researchers, and communities to drive forward nature-based solutions that create greener, more resilient cities for generations to come.

Essays examining both the theory and practice of medieval translation.Engaging and informative to read, challenging in its assertions, and provocative in the best way, inviting the reader to sift, correlate and reflect on the broader applicability of points made in reference to a specific text orexchange. Professor Carolyne P. Collette, Mount Holyoke College.Medieval notions of translatio raise issues that have since been debated in contemporary translation studies concerning the translator's role asinterpreter or author; the ability of translation to reinforce or unsettle linguistic or political dominance; and translation's capacity for establishing cultural contact, or participating in cultural appropriation or effacement. This collection puts these ethical and political issues centre stage, asking whether questions currently being posed by theorists of translation need rethinking or revising when brought into dialogue with medieval examples. Contributors explore translation - as a practice, a necessity, an impossibility and a multi-media form - through multiple perspectives on language, theory, dissemination and cultural transmission. Exploring texts, authors, languages and genres not often brought together in a single volume, individual essays focus on topics such as the politics of multilingualism, the role of translation in conflict situations, the translator's invisibility, hospitality, untranslatability and the limits of translation as a category.EMMA CAMPBELL is Associate Professor in French at the University of Warwick; ROBERT MILLS is Lecturer in History of Art at University College London.
