A concise introduction to structural dynamics and earthquake engineeringBasic Structural Dynamics serves as a fundamental introduction to the topic of structural dynamics. Covering single and multiple-degree-of-freedom systems while providing an introduction to earthquake engineering, the book keeps the coverage succinct and on topic at a level that is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students. Through dozens of worked examples based on actual structures, it also introduces readers to MATLAB, a powerful software for solving both simple and complex structural dynamics problems.Conceptually composed of three parts, the book begins with the basic concepts and dynamic response of single-degree-of-freedom systems to various excitations. Next, it covers the linear and nonlinear response of multiple-degree-of-freedom systems to various excitations. Finally, it deals with linear and nonlinear response of structures subjected to earthquake ground motions and structural dynamics-related code provisions for assessing seismic response of structures. Chapter coverage includes: Single-degree-of-freedom systemsFree vibration response of SDOF systemsResponse to harmonic loadingResponse to impulse loadsResponse to arbitrary dynamic loadingMultiple-degree-of-freedom systemsIntroduction to nonlinear response of structuresSeismic response of structuresIf you're an undergraduate or graduate student or a practicing structural or mechanical engineer who requires some background on structural dynamics and the effects of earthquakes on structures, Basic Structural Dynamics will quickly get you up to speed on the subject without sacrificing important information.

Complete, practical coverage of the evaluation, analysis, and design and code requirements of seismic isolation systems. Based on the concept of reducing seismic demand rather than increasing the earthquake resistance capacity of structures, seismic isolation is a surprisingly simple approach to earthquake protection. However, proper application of this technology within complex seismic design code requirements is both complicated and difficult. Design of Seismic Isolated Structures provides complete, up-to-date coverage of seismic isolation, complete with a systematic development of concepts in theory and practical application supplemented by numerical examples. This book helps design professionals navigate and understand the ideas and procedures involved in the analysis, design, and development of specifications for seismic isolated structures. It also provides a framework for satisfying code requirements while retaining the favorable cost-effective and damage control aspects of this new technology. An indispensable resource for practicing and aspiring engineers and architects, Design of Seismic Isolated Structures includes:* Isolation system components.* Complete coverage of code provisions for seismic isolation.* Mechanical characteristics and modeling of isolators.* Buckling and stability of elastomeric isolators.* Examples of seismic isolation designs.* Specifications for the design, manufacture, and testing of isolation devices.

The long-awaited second edition of 'The Seismic Design Handbook' reflects the latest concepts in seismic design. This updated edition has been extensively revised and now includes three new chapters: Seismic Upgrading of Existing Structures, Performance Based Seismic Engineering, and Computer Applications in Seismic Design. The first edition of this handbook was published in 1989 and became a standard textbook for teaching seismic design at major universities such as UC Berkeley, Stanford USC, University of Buffalo, University of Michigan, Cornell, the Imperial College of London, Israel Institute of Technology and many other fine institutions. The new edition is an essential resource for civil, structural and geotechnical engineers; code officials; architects; seismologists and students. The substantial increase in size (now more than 800 pages) reflects many lessons learned from damaging effects of earthquakes worldwide over the last decade. Developed by a distinguished panel of 22 experts from industry and academia, the handbook contains the most current information on planning, analysis, and design of earthquake-resistant buildings. It bridges the gap between advances in the theories of earthquake-resistant design and their practical implementation. Where applicable, the provisions of seismic design standards such as the 2000 International Building Code (IBC), 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC) and the NEHRP Guidelines for the Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings (FEMA 273/274) are explained, and their differences are highlighted. A valuable feature of the new edition is its companion CD-ROM containing the complete text of the book, along with the UBC-IBC Structural Comparison & Cross Reference published by ICBO, and FEMA 273/274 and 302/303.

This book features chapters based on selected presentations from the International Congress on Advanced Earthquake Resistance of Structures, AERS2016, held in Samsun, Turkey, from 24 to 28 October 2016.It covers the latest advances in three widely popular research areas in Earthquake Engineering: Performance-Based Seismic Design, Seismic Isolation Systems, and Structural Health Monitoring. The book shows the vulnerability of high-rise and seismically isolated buildings to long periods of strong ground motions, and proposes new passive and semi-active structural seismic isolation systems to protect against such effects. These systems are validated through real-time hybrid tests on shaking tables.Structural health monitoring systems provide rapid assessment of structural safety after an earthquake and allow preventive measures to be taken, such as shutting down the elevators and gas lines, before damage occurs. Using the vibration data from instrumented tall buildings, the book demonstrates that large, distant earthquakes and surface waves, which are not accounted for in most attenuation equations, can cause long-duration shaking and damage in tall buildings. The overview of the current performance-based design methodologies includes discussions on the design of tall buildings and the reasons common prescriptive code provisions are not sufficient to address the requirements of tall-building design. In addition, the book explains the modelling and acceptance criteria associated with various performance-based design guidelines, and discusses issues such as selection and scaling of ground motion records, soil-foundation-structure interaction, and seismic instrumentation and peer review needs. The book is of interest to a wide range of professionals in earthquake engineering, including designers, researchers, and graduate students.
