By combining Rosenberg’s diary notes with additional key documents and in-depth analysis, this book shows Rosenberg’s crucial role in the Nazi regime’s anti-Jewish policy. In the second half of 1941 the territory administered by Rosenberg became the region where the mass murder of Jewish men, women, and children first became a systematic pattern. Indeed, months before the emergence of German death camps in Poland, Nazi leaders perceived the occupied Soviet Union as the area where the “final solution of the Jewish question” could be executed on a European scale. Covering almost the entire duration of the Third Reich, these previously inaccessible sources throw new light on the thoughts and actions of the leading men around Hitler during critical junctures that led to war, genocide, and Nazi Germany’s final defeat.

This book explores the Holocaust as a social process. Although the mass murder of European Jews was essentially the result of political-ideological decisions made by the Nazi state leadership, the events of the Holocaust were also part of a social dynamic. All European societies experienced developments that led to the social exclusion, persecution and murder of the continent’s Jews. This volume therefore questions Raul Hilberg´s category of the ‘bystander’. In societies where the political order expects citizens to endorse the exclusion of particular groups in the population, there cannot be any completely uninvolved bystanders. Instead, this book examines the multifarious forms of social action and behaviour connected with the Holocaust. It focuses on institutions and persons, helpers, co-perpetrators, facilitators and spectators, beneficiaries and profiteers, as well as Jewish victims and Jewish organisations trying to cope with the dynamics of exclusion and persecution.

+++Die lange verschwundenen Tagebücher von Alfred Rosenberg, dem Chef-Ideologen der NSDAP, erstmals in einer Gesamtausgabe – ein Schlüsseldokument zur Geschichte von Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust+++Seit 1946 verschollen, wurden die Tagebücher des NSDAP-Reichsleiters Alfred Rosenberg erst 2013 aufgefunden. Hier liegen sie erstmals als Gesamtausgabe vor, ausführlich kommentiert von den renommierten Historikern Frank Bajohr(Zentrum für Holocaust-Studien, München) und Jürgen Matthäus (US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington). Rosenbergs Aufzeichnungen zeigen, dass seine Rolle bei der Vorbereitung und Umsetzung des Holocaust lange unterschätzt wurde. Schon früh einer der radikalsten Antisemiten, unterstützte er bis zuletzt die deutsche Vernichtungspolitik. Seine Notizen verdeutlichen neben seiner unbedingten Ergebenheit gegenüber Hitler die erbitterte Konkurrenz innerhalb der Funktionselite um den »Führer«, insbesondere die intime Feindschaft zwischen Rosenberg und Joseph Goebbels. Aus der Perspektive eines der Hauptverantwortlichen eröffnet dieses Schlüsseldokument neue, wichtige Einblicke in die vom NS-Regime erzeugte Gewaltdynamik.

Tagebücher und Briefe von Tätern, Opfern und »Bystandern" des NS-Regimes als Quellen, die individualbiographisch entschlüsselt werden müssen.Kaum eine Quellengattung hat die Beschäftigung mit dem gesellschaftlichen Alltag des »Dritten Reiches" ähnlich stark beeinflusst wie die der Tagebücher. Allein die 1995 erstmals veröffentlichten Tagebücher des Dresdner Romanisten Victor Klemperer haben sich bis heute mehr als 300.000 Mal verkauft.Das große öffentliche Interesse hängt sicher zum Teil mit dem langsamen Verschwinden der Zeitzeugen zusammen. Darüber hinaus hat sich jedoch seit den achtziger Jahren ein alltags- und gesellschaftsgeschichtlicher Perspektivenwechsel vollzogen, der die damaligen Zeitgenossen als handelnde Akteure begreift und nach deren Wahrnehmung der historischen Ereignisse fragt.

A New Forum for International Holocaust Research.European Holocaust Studies (EHS) publishes key international research results on the murder of the European Jews and its wider contexts. This new English-language yearbook primarily aims to bring together and provide higher visibility to research contributions produced across different countries and institutions. It also strives to promote international exchange, especially among scholars from North America, Europe, and Israel.The EHS issues are thematic. Each issue features a selection of peer-reviewed research articles, which offer novel perspectives on the main theme. Further sections include a discussion of key documents and a selection of research project descriptions related to the overall topic, as well as a literature review or essay dealing with historiographical debates on the subject.

Als erste Einrichtung erforschte das Institut für Zeitgeschichte die NS-Diktatur – 75 Jahre nach seiner Gründung ist es Zeit für eine Bilanz.Das Institut für Zeitgeschichte wurde 1949 gegründet, um als erstes Institut überhaupt die nationalsozialistische Diktatur wissenschaftlich zu untersuchen. Bis heute gehört die Erforschung der NS-Zeit zu seinen Kernaufgaben. 75 Jahre nach ihrer Gründung ist die Einrichtung selbst Teil der Zeitgeschichte geworden. Die Beiträge analysieren kritisch die frühe NS-Forschung am Institut, benennen Erkenntnisse und Einsichten, Kontroversen und Konflikte, Leistungen und Fehler. Welche Schwerpunkte setzte das IfZ in der Forschung? Wie deuteten die damaligen Historiker den Holocaust? Welche Rolle spielten sie als Gutachter vor Gericht? Wie positionierten sie sich in öffentlichen Konflikten um die NS-Zeit? Tausende gutachterliche Anfragen an das Institut zeugten von einem enormen Aufklärungsinteresse einer Öffentlichkeit, in der gleichzeitig viele für ein Vergessen plädierten.
