An in-depth examination of intelligent approaches to increasing the accuracy of a variety of system components. Utilizing a unified, adaptive, inverse approach, the book offers electrical, mechanical, chemical, aeronautical and computer engineers methods for controlling many of the "hard" nonlinearities of frequently-employed control systems such as dead-zone, backlash and hysteresis. Discusses such nonlinearities at both the input and output points of a linear part and within both continuous time designs and discrete time designs.

A systematic and unified presentation of the fundamentals of adaptive control theory in both continuous time and discrete time Today, adaptive control theory has grown to be a rigorous and mature discipline. As the advantages of adaptive systems for developing advanced applications grow apparent, adaptive control is becoming more popular in many fields of engineering and science. Using a simple, balanced, and harmonious style, this book provides a convenient introduction to the subject and improves one's understanding of adaptive control theory.Adaptive Control Design and Analysis features: Introduction to systems and controlStability, operator norms, and signal convergenceAdaptive parameter estimationState feedback adaptive control designsParametrization of state observers for adaptive controlUnified continuous and discrete-time adaptive controlL1+a robustness theory for adaptive systemsDirect and indirect adaptive control designsBenchmark comparison study of adaptive control designsMultivariate adaptive controlNonlinear adaptive controlAdaptive compensation of actuator nonlinearitiesEnd-of-chapter discussion, problems, and advanced topicsAs either a textbook or reference, this self-contained tutorial of adaptive control design and analysis is ideal for practicing engineers, researchers, and graduate students alike.

A complete reference to adaptive control of systems with nonsmooth industrial nonlinearities such as: backlash; dead-zones; component failure; friction; hysteresis; saturation; and time delays.Actuator nonlinearities are ubiquitous in engineering practice and limit control system performance. While standard feedback control alone cannot handle these nonsmooth nonlinearities effectively, this book shows how such nonlinear characteristics can be compensated for by using adaptive and intelligent control techniques. This allows desired system performance to be achieved in the presence of uncertain nonlinearities. With surveys of literature and summaries of various design methods, the contributors present new solutions to some important issues in adaptive control of systems with various sorts of nonsmooth nonlinearities. The book motivates more research activities in the field of adaptive control of nonsmooth nonlinear industrial systems by formulating several challenging open problems in related areas.

It is because the actuator is the final step in the control chain that failure can be so important and hard to compensate for. When the nature or location of the failure is unknown, the offsetting of consequent system uncertainties becomes even more awkward. This monograph centers on counteracting situations in which unknown control inputs become indeterminately unresponsive over an uncertain period of time by adapting the responses of remaining functional actuators. Both "lock-in-place" and varying-value failures are dealt with. The results presented demonstrate:• the existence of nominal plant-model matching controller structures with associated matching conditions for all possible failure patterns;• the choice of a desirable adaptive controller structure;• derivation of novel error models in the presence of failures;• the design of adaptive laws allowing controllers to respond to combinations of uncertainties stemming from activator failures and system parameters.

A complete reference to adaptive control of systems with nonsmooth industrial nonlinearities such as:- backlash- dead-zones- component failure- friction- hysteresis- saturation- time delays. These nonlinearities in industrial actuators cause severe problems in the motion control of industrial processes, particularly in view of modern requirements of speed and precision of movement such as occur in semiconductor manufacturing, precision machining, and elsewhere. Actuator nonlinearities are ubiquitous in engineering practice and limit control system performance. While standard feedback control alone cannot handle these nonsmooth nonlinearities effectively, this book, with unified and systematic adaptive design methods developed in 16 chapters, shows how such nonlinear characteristics can be effectively compensated for by using adaptive and intelligent control techniques. This allows desired system performance to be achieved in the presence of uncertain nonlinearities. With extensive surveys of literature and comprehensive summaries of various design methods, the authors of the book chapters, who are experts in their areas of interest, present new solutions to some important issues in adaptive control of systems with various sorts of nonsmooth nonlinearities. In addition to providing solutions, the book is also aimed at motivating more research activities in the important field of adaptive control of nonsmooth nonlinear industrial systems by formulating several challenging open problems in related areas.

When an actuator fails, chaos or calamity can often ensue. It is because the actuator is the final step in the control chain, when the control systems instructions are made physically real that failure can be so important and hard to compensate for. When the nature or location of the failure is unknown, the offsetting of consequent system uncertainties becomes even more awkward. Adaptive Control of Systems with Actuator Failures centres on counteracting situations in which unknown control inputs become indeterminately unresponsive over an uncertain period of time by adapting the responses of remaining functional control systems. Both lock-in-place and varying-value failures are dealt with. The results presented demonstrate: the existence of nominal plant-model matching controller structures with associated matching conditions for all possible failure patterns; the choice of a desirable adaptive controller structure; derivation of novel error models in the presence of failures; the design of adaptive laws allowing controllers to respond to combinations of uncertainties stemming from activator failures and system parameters.Adaptive Control of Systems with Actuator Failures will be of significance to control engineers generally and especially to both academics and industrial practitioners working on safety-critical systems or those in which full-blown fault identification and diagnosis is either too time consuming or too expensive.

This book provides readers with a systematic and unified framework for identification and adaptive control of Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy systems. Its design techniques help readers applying these powerful tools to solve challenging nonlinear control problems. The book embodies a systematic study of fuzzy system identification and control problems, using T–S fuzzy system tools for both function approximation and feedback control of nonlinear systems. Alongside this framework, the book also: introduces basic concepts of fuzzy sets, logic and inference system; discusses important properties of T–S fuzzy systems; develops offline and online identification algorithms for T–S fuzzy systems; investigates the various controller structures and corresponding design conditions for adaptive control of continuous-time T–S fuzzy systems; develops adaptive control algorithms for discrete-time input–output formT–S fuzzy systems with much relaxed design conditions, and discrete-time state-space T–S fuzzy systems; anddesigns stable parameter-adaptation algorithms for both linearly and nonlinearly parameterized T–S fuzzy systems. The authors address adaptive fault compensation problems for T–S fuzzy systems subject to actuator faults. They cover a broad spectrum of related technical topics and to develop a substantial set of adaptive nonlinear system control tools. Fuzzy System Identification and Adaptive Control helps engineers in the mechanical, electrical and aerospace fields, to solve complex control design problems. The book can be used as a reference for researchers and academics in nonlinear, intelligent, adaptive and fault-tolerant control.

This unique monograph introduces an important new area of control system research and presents some new methods for solving some typical problems in the field of sandwich nonlinear systems. Sandwiched nonsmooth nonlinearities such as dead-zone, hysteresis and backlash between dynamic blocks are presented, as well as continuous-time control designs. A framework for hybrid control is developed that is used to design control schemes for different cases of the control problem with required modifications. Friction compensation is addressed for systems with sandwiched friction along with sandwiched dynamics. An open problem of the control of sandwich nonlinear systems with actuator failures is introduced by a control design for an illustrative case.
