Eduard Zeller (1814‑1908), einer der großen wirkungsmächtigen Gelehrten des 19. Jahrhunderts, hat seine Zeit als Theologe, Religions- und Kirchenhistoriker, Philosoph, Philosophie- und Kulturhistoriker der Antike ebenso wie als Wissenschaftspolitiker und Organisator großer Akademieprojekte geprägt. Die Beiträge in diesem Band zeigen die Bedeutung dieses Gelehrten, dessen Werk äußerst vielschichtig ist und dessen Wirkung sich in wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Diskursen bis ins 20. Jahrhundert nachzeichnen lässt.

Nicolai Hartmann hat philosophische Studien zur Erkenntnistheorie, Ontologie, Ethik, Philosophie des Geistes und Naturphilosophie geschrieben. Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen davon aus, dass seine Arbeit auf all diesen Feldern im Zeichen der Verabschiedung der Systemphilosophie sowie der Begründung einer Konzeption systematischen Philosophierens steht. Im Zentrum von Hartmanns Denken steht das "Kategorienproblem", d. i. die Frage nach den elementaren Strukturen der Wirklichkeit und der menschlichen Erkenntnis. In seinem Bezug auf die philosophische Tradition und seiner Hinwendung zu den Natur- und Sozialwissenschaften unter Einbeziehung auch der alltäglichen Erfahrung macht Hartmann deutlich, dass er an dem Anspruch festhält, die Phänomene der Lebenswelt, Wissenschaft und Geschichte in einem einheitlichen "Aufbau der realen Welt" zu integrieren, ohne ihre Heterogenität und Selbständigkeit zu leugnen. Jahrhunderts, zeichnet das Bemühen um eine Rekonstruktion der philosophischen Tradition in der Auseinandersetzung mit den Wissenschaften aus. Er hat, um diesen Gedanken zu unterstreichen, das Wort "systematische Philosophie" geprägt. Die Praxis systematischen Philosophierens wird erstmals in der hier in kommtierter Fassung vorgelegten Auswahl der "Cirkel-Protokolle" fassbar. Es handelt sich um das Dokument eines Disputierkreises, den Hartmann von 1920 bis 1950 geleitet hat. Hartmann hat in seiner Marburger, Kölner, Berliner und Göttinger Zeit mit einem wechselnden Kreis von persönlich eingeladenen Studenten, Studentinnen und älteren Schülern zu verschiedenen philosophischen Themen und Problemen Gespräche geführt. Aufgrund ihrer dialogischen Form geben die im Nachlass Hartmanns befindlichen Cirkelprotokolle einen unvergleichlichen Einblick in die geistige Kultur des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Hartung works out both the linguistic and philosophy of language setting as well as socio-political and cultural implications of the radical critique of language developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by philosophers as diverse as Steinthal, Cohen, Simmel or Cassirer. He argues that the theories pleaded for a plurality of linguistic and cultural forms as well as for a new logic beyond the traditional nature/culture partition.

Cultural scientists, together with researchers from media science and media engineering, analyze questions of document modeling, including a document’s contexts of use, on the basis of cultural theory. The research also concerns the debate on the material turn in the fields of cultural studies and media studies.

Looking back on existing work, texts on written communication by the philosopher and sociologist Georg Simmel and by an interdisciplinary French group of authors under the pseudonym Roger T. Pédauque are taken as a starting point and presented afresh.

A look ahead to the future is also attempted. Whereas the modeling (including technical modeling) of documents has to date largely been limited to the description of output forms and specific content, the foundations are laid here for including documents’ contexts of use in models that are grounded in cultural theory.
