This monograph gives a complete overview of the techniques and the methods for semantics-aware content representation and shows how to apply such techniques in various use cases, such as recommender systems, user profiling and social media analysis.Throughout the book, the authors provide an extensive analysis of the techniques currently proposed in the literature and cover all the available tools and libraries to implement and exploit such methodologies in real-world scenarios.The book first introduces the problem of information overload and the reasons why content-based information needs to be taken into account. Next, the basics of Natural Language Processing are provided, by describing operations such as tokenization, stopword removal, lemmatization, stemming, part-of-speech tagging, along with the main problems and issues. Finally, the book describes the different approaches for semantics-aware content representation: such approaches are split into ‘exogenous’ and ‘endogenous’ ones, depending on whether external knowledge sources as DBpedia or geometrical models and distributional semantics are used, respectively. Finding knowledge – or meaning – in data is the goal of every knowledge d- covery e?ort. Subsequent goals and questions regarding this knowledge di?er amongknowledgediscovery(KD) projectsandapproaches. Onecentralquestion is whether and to what extent the meaning extracted from the data is expressed in a formal way that allows not only humans but also machines to understand and re-use it, i. e. , whether the semantics are formal semantics. Conversely, the input to KD processes di?ers between KD projects and approaches. One central questioniswhetherthebackgroundknowledge,businessunderstanding,etc. that the analyst employs to improve the results of KD is a set of natural-language statements, a theory in a formal language, or somewhere in between. Also, the data that are being mined can be more or less structured and/or accompanied by formal semantics. These questions must be asked in every KD e?ort. Nowhere may they be more pertinent, however, than in KD from Web data (“Web mining”). Thisis due especially to the vast amounts and heterogeneity of data and ba- ground knowledge available for Web mining (content, link structure, and - age), and to the re-use of background knowledge and KD results over the Web as a global knowledge repository and activity space. In addition, the (Sem- tic) Web can serve as a publishing space for the results of knowledge discovery from other resources, especially if the whole process is underpinned by common ontologies.

The World Wide Web is a rich source of information about human behavior. It containslarge amount of data organizedvia interconnected Web pages,traces of information search, user feedback on items of interest, etc. In addition to large data volumes, one of the important characteristics of the Web is its dynamics, where content,structure and usagearechanging over time. This showsup in the rise of related research areas like communities of practice, knowledge mana- ment, Web communities, and peer-to-peer. After the lesson learned during last years and following the successful edition of EC-Web 2009, for its 11th edition EC-Web tried to provide a clearer description of the electronic commerce universe focusing on some relevant topics. The main focus was not only on Internet-related techniques and approaches. The aim of EC-Web 2010 was to also cover aspects related to theoretical foundations of e-commerce, business processes as well as new approaches exploiting recently emerged technologies and scenarios such as the Semantic Web, Web services, SOA architectures, mobile and ubiquitous computing, just to cite a few. Due to their central role in any realistic e-commerce infrastructure, security and privacy issues were widely considered, without excluding legal and regulatory aspects. The choice of the above relevant topics directly reflects the fact that electronic commerce (EC), in the last few years, has changed and evolved into a well-established and founded reality both from a technological point of view and from a scientific one. Nevertheless, together with its evolution, new challenges and topics have emerged as well as new questions have been raised related to many aspects of EC. Keeping in mind the experience of the last edition of EC-Web, we maintained, for its 11th edition, the structure and the scientific organization of EC-Web 2009, aiming to highlight the autonomous role of the different (sometimes heterogeneous) aspects of EC, without missing their interdisciplinary scope.
