The Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) Survey in Psychology is the last among a series of academic social science surveys undertaken by the nodal governmental agency of social research in India. In five volumes, this Survey evaluate developments in the discipline of psychology in terms of its theoretical, methodological, and applied endeavours in India in the last decade. Together they assess progress made in psychological scholarship and thereby help consolidate disciplinary developments. Each of the chapters in the five volumes demonstrates multidirectional developments emerging in the discipline of psychology in India. The Survey is an exercise in discipline building, rooted in the changing national context, incorporating multiple theoretical strands, and enabling cross-disciplinary dialogue. The first volume discusses the spiritual, philosophical, and cultural traditions of India and sets the context for the subsequent volumes. It traces the narrative of the discipline from its inception in the Indian colonial past and presents a detailed account of its present status. The second volume delves into the themes of cognitive and affective psychology. Volume three focuses on the relationship between the individual and the social. The fourth volume explores organizational psychology in India, and the last volume expands on themes in contemporary mental health research. A comprehensive assessment of the way psychology research is evolving in India, the Survey covers key disciplinary concepts, recent trends, and indigenous perspectives.

This volume locates social psychology in the context of contemporary societies in an increasingly globalizing world where time, space, and relationships are reshaped by powerful information, communication, and travel technologies. The volume revisits the efforts thus far while commenting upon the treatment of pertinent issues in the emerging sociopolitical and academic climate of the globalized area. It discusses how globalization has led to multidimensional changes in the society, warranting newer ways of comprehending, conceptualizing, and navigating through the complexities of the emerging social world. While mapping the new changes shaping contemporary discourse, the book refers to the new emerging patterns of human relationships, which are acquiring different shapes and meanings, leading not just to restructuring but also to creating innovative ways of being and making sense of the world. The volume would be useful to students and teachers of psychology, applied psychology, sociology, social work, public health, gender, and women studies. It would also be an invaluable companion to pediatrics, forensic medicine, psychiatry, and law enforcement authorities like police and judiciary.

This volume provides multifaceted and multidisciplinary insights into the growing field of health studies. Providing inputs from the behavioural sciences as well as social sciences, it discusses the issues of recovery from illness, and growth and wellbeing, as situated in social and eco-cultural contexts, and addresses the modalities of health-related interventions in diverse contexts. The specific themes taken up by the contributors are post-trauma growth, resilience, gender and health, distress and wellness, indigenous healing, counselling and psychotherapy, disability-related interventions, self-healing, as well as health issues of special groups like adolescents and the elderly, cancer patients and those suffering from other chronic illnesses. Till recently, the medical model has prevailed as the chief form of understanding health and illness. This has led to marginalization of the context, localization of all health and wellness components within the individual, and to biological reductionism. The contributions to this volume propose corrective measures and provide diverse approaches in a balanced manner. This volume is useful for researchers and practitioners interested in health studies, including the behavioural sciences, social work, medical anthropology, and public health.

This book takes a social psychological perspective to study the ways in which identity, religious beliefs and well-being are related to and affect each other in the contemporary world. It simultaneously draws upon intellectual resources from the extant interdisciplinary literature to build connections within the broader societal context. In view of the social diversity and changes in post-globalization India, issues of identity, religion and well-being emerge as dynamic and vibrant aspects of social reality in both individual and group contexts, across age groups and genders. The current social-cultural-political scenario in the India, therefore, points to the need to investigate the outcome of personal and social well-being in relation to identity and religion. As contexts change, these issues take different shades and influence human conditions differentially. This book undertakes the investigation by going beyond the traditional tropes of behavioral science and discussing the dynamic interplay and confluence of socio-cultural-political variables in changing times. It draws from a large sample from the four major religious faiths in India—Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Sikhism—and enables readers to understand significant interactions among facets of identity (personal and social), religious beliefs and practices and well-being (personal and social) with age and gender in an important segment of the global population.
