We are at the beginning of the third decade of studies at the molecular level on the pathogenesis of Listeria monocytogenes and the response of the host to its infections. It is a good time to survey the wealth of information that these studies have revealed and to think about perspectives for a more complete understanding of this important pathogen. During the past 20 years, L. mono- togenes has emerged from relative obscurity to being one of the most intensely studied bacterial pathogens. In the opening chapter, Daniel A. Portnoy provides a personal and historical account of the development of our understanding at the molecular level of invasion of the host cell, growth in the cytosol, and ce- to-cell spread by means of actin polymerization-powered motility. We are also fortunate to have contributions from Pascale Cossart and Werner Goebel and their colleagues. These pioneering investigators continue to make major cont- butions to the molecular description of almost every aspect of L. monocytogenes pathogenesis. All chapters in this book have been written by experts who have contributed widely to this field. We are extremely grateful for the efforts of all contributors who have provided contemporary accounts of the status of various aspects of L. monocytogenes pathogenesis and the host response. Their positive responses to this effort are deeply appreciated. Any specialist volume in the biological sciences can only provide a snapshot of the field at the time of its publication.

The Symposium on Nanostructured Materials and Systems was held during the 8th Pacific Rim Conference on Ceramic and Glass Technology (PACRIM 8) from May 31-June 5, 2009 in Vancouver, Canada. This symposium aimed to review the progress in the state-of-the-art of nanoscience and nanotechnology including synthesis, processing, modeling, applications and assessment of toxicological potential of nanomatter. More than 55 contributions (invited talks, oral presentations, and posters), were presented by participants, from all over the world, representing universities, research institutions, and industry which made this symposium an attractive forum for interdisciplinary presentations and discussions and to elaborate their functional diversity. This issue contains 16 peer-reviewed papers (invited and contributed) incorporating the latest developments related to synthesis, processing and manufacturing technologies of nanoscaled materials and systems including one-dimensional nanostructures, nanoparticle-based composites, electrospinning of nanofibers, functional thin films, ceramic membranes, bioactive materials and self-assembled functional nanostructures and nanodevices. These papers discuss several important aspects related to fabrication and engineering issues necessary for understanding and further development of processing and manufacturing of nanostructured materials and systems.

This book comprehensively covers the topics of origin and distribution, evolution and types, regional and global importance, biodiversity conservation, plant-soil interfaces, ecosystem functions and services, social-ecological systems, climate change adaptations, land degradation and restoration, grazing management and pastoral production, and sustainable future of the grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), which is a globally unique eco-region called the "Roof of the World" because of its high elevation, “Third Pole on Earth" because of its alpine environment and the "Water Tower in Asia" because of its headwater location. The grassland ecosystem covers above 60% of QTP, which is about 2.5 million km2, 1/4 of Chinese total territorial lands.The grassland ecosystem of the QTP (the Third Pole) is an important part of the palaearctic region, which features alpine cover and low oxygen. The Third Pole's grasslands not only provide important ecosystem functions such as biodiversity conservation, carbon storage, water resource regulation, climate control, and natural disaster mitigation at a global scale, but also provide critical ecosystem services such as pastoral production, cultural inheritance, and tourism and recreation at local and regional scales.The purposes of this monograph are to address the following questions: (1) What are the special features of the Third Pole's grasslands? (2) How have climate changes and human activities changed the structures and functions of the Third Pole's grasslands? (3) How can we cope with land degradation and climate change through innovative restoration and protective actions for Third Pole's grasslands? And (4) How can we promote the sustainable development of social-ecological systems of the Third Pole's grasslands through best management practices including grazing. The goal of this book is to attract the attention of international audiences to realize the importance of the Third Pole’s grasslands, and to call for the actions of global communities to effectively protect and sustainably use the Third Pole's grasslands. This book can be served as textbooks, teaching materials and documentaries for different audiences. This book introduces the principle theories and applications of control and filtering problems to address emerging hot topics in feedback systems. In this book, various singularly perturbed jump system models in continuous-time or discrete-time domain, such as Markov jump singularly perturbed systems, semi-Markov jump singularly perturbed systems, hidden Markov jump singularly perturbed systems, and singularly perturbed jump complex network model, have been considered for some control synthesis problems. Also, some partial probability information cases are taken into account when addressing those control synthesis problems. To show the effectiveness and applicability of the obtained results, some numerical examples and practical industrial model examples are given.
