Further, the psychoanalytic sense of it is that each symptom needs to be assessed, analyzed, and approached with reference to the unique experience of the patient and the patient’s history; among other f- tors, also in terms of psychosexual conflict, and ego-strength. Given this position, it also has been felt that no single procedure, or code could be developed to address all symptoms of all patients as though, as an analogy, one lock and one key could apply to every symptom. In this sense, there has been scarcely any attempt to derive a universal code that would address all symptoms with respect to the formation and structure of the symptom, regardless of the patient’s particular experience and psychological h- tory. In this volume, however, with only a few qualifications, I will present a s- gle universal code to unlock any and all specifically defined psychological symptoms. I will present a system and procedure–a blueprint–with which to do it. One key. The debate between theist and atheist is an old one and has recently become a highly publicized one. There are some well known proponents of arguments on both sides. To provide a different perspective this book takes a psychoanalytically based evolutionary view, presenting an entirely original theoretical concept. It introduces an epigenetic component to the discussion of God/no God within the context of evolutionary processes at the point where a thinking brain appears -- a cerebral cortex characteristic of homosapien. Therefore, it joins evolutionary phenomena with psychological realities for survival and safety, for empowerment and the absence of disempowerment. Research is cited to show that such instinctive survival behavior involves several prototypical behavioral categories relevant to all organisms from amoeba to man. Freud, Darwin, Gould, and the major historical figures of the God/no God debate are included throughout, and the point is made that environmental conditions can produce biological effects and this is the essence of the proposed epigenetical context of the debate. Therefore, this volume concerns itself with exploring the question of whether there is a God-gene or whether God is discovered epigentically in a psycho/evolutionary context. In either case, this book does not argue for the existence or non-existence of God. Rather, it introduces a new dimension to the debate − a psycho/evolutionary one.

Emotions in Early Development reviews important theoretical advances in the understanding of emotions in early development, paying particular attention to issues such as the extent to which infants are born with certain emotions; how one infers the existence of emotion in infants; and the relations between emotion and cognition. The connection between emotions and personality is also discussed, along with the role of parent-child interactions in the appearance and development of emotions. Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume begins with a summary of issues in the development of emotion in infancy, from the function of emotions to the problem of labeling affects in infants as well as the development of smile, stranger anxiety, and the sense of self. The next chapter examines the parent-infant communication system, with emphasis on the two-way, primarily nonverbal, interaction that takes place between mother and infant and the nature of the learning processes that occur in both the infant and the mother. The reader is then introduced to a concept known as social referencing, or the use of emotional information gained from another person to help evaluate situations. Subsequent chapters focus on individual differences in emotional expressions observed in one-year-old infants; Piaget''s theory of cognitive development and its implications for a theory of emotions; emotional sequences and consequences; and the relationship between attachment and separation processes in infancy.
