This open access book addresses several questions regarding the implementation of human and organisational factors (HOF) so that recent improvements in industrial safety can be built upon.

This open access book addresses the future of work and industry by 2040—a core interest for many disciplines inspiring a strong momentum for employment and training within the industrial world. The future of industrial safety in terms of technological risk-management, although of obvious concern to international actors in various industries, has been quite sparsely addressed. This brief reflects the viewpoints of experts who come from different academic disciplines and various sectors such as oil and gas, energy, transportation, and the digital and even the military worlds, as expressed in debates and discussions during a two-day international seminar. The contributors address such questions as:What influence will ageing and lack of digital skills in the workforce of the occidental world have on safety culture?What are the likely impacts of big data, artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies on decision-making, and on the roles and responsibilities of individual actors and whole organizations?What role have human beings in a world of accelerating changes?What effects will societal concerns and the entrance of new players have on technological risk management and governance?Managing Future Challenges for Safety will interest and influence researchers considering the future effects of a number of currently developing technologies and their practitioner counterparts working in industry and regulation.

This open access book contributes to the increasing trend toward greater public participation in decision-making in many areas of public life, particularly in the field of the environment and sustainable development. It describes the outcome of a two-day workshop, organized by the Foundation for an Industrial Safety Culture in 2023, that addresses the continuing sensitivities surround the impact of hazardous industrial activities.Public Participation in Governance of Industrial Safety Risks brings together international academic experts as well as industrial and institutional representatives to shed light on the topics discussed during this workshop. Through the viewpoints of experts from various disciplines, industrial sectors, and countries, it offers an opportunity to gain a better grasp of the multiplicity and complexity of participatory processes and to understand their expected benefits, their drawbacks, and potential pitfalls. The work supports the making of better-informed decisions, especially by industrial or regulatory actors, to engage or not with public participation.

This open-access brief offers routes to the solution of the threats to the safety performance of high-risk industries caused by skills challenges. It addresses the consequences of job transformation linked to technological developments, digitalization, unfavourable demographics and the lack of attractiveness of some high-risk industrial sectors, today and in the near future.The first part of the brief highlights the questions:What about the collective dimension of skills, skills acquired outside the professional sphere, or the longitudinal perspective of skills development?Why do we sometimes encounter a “learning wall,” a situation in which the training and mentoring needs of newcomers exceed the capacity for skills transfer from experienced employees?What are the impacts of digital transformation on the dynamics of work groups?The contributors investigate aspects of these topics that are rarely studied or even considered.The rest of the brief explores various solutions that can be considered to meet the skills challenge in a constantly evolving world.
