This open access book addresses several questions regarding the implementation of human and organisational factors (HOF) so that recent improvements in industrial safety can be built upon. It addresses sources of frustration in senior management with high expectations of operational recommendations and disquiet on the part of HOF specialists struggling to have an impact on high-level decision making. The brief explores these issues with an emphasis on examples and lessons learned based on the experience of its authors, who come from different academic disciplines and various industrial sectors such as oil and gas, energy and transportation. It then offers some ways forward for a better consideration of HOF in hazardous companies with a view of promoting safety and facing challenges in a rapidly changing world.

This open access book addresses the future of work and industry by 2040—a core interest for many disciplines inspiring a strong momentum for employment and training within the industrial world. The future of industrial safety in terms of technological risk-management, although of obvious concern to international actors in various industries, has been quite sparsely addressed. This open access brief-in-two-volumes provides a global overview of the many ways in which today's safety management and governance of high-risk industries may be destabilized in an evolving and rapidly transforming world. Rather than focusing exclusively on the traditional perimeter of safety management and governance, it considers industrial safety within a wider societal, technological, (geo)political, economic and environmental context to explore future challenges in the coupling of safety and its ecosystem and how to live with them.This first volume analyzes the current situation as well as the destabilizations now underway and predicted to come in the future and suggests new frames of reference for this changing world, including:the social contract,AI realism andthe regulatory framework.The second volume focuses on challenges at the organizational level before providing illustrations of ways forward implemented in various areas.In considering the complexity and uncertainty of the topic, the two volumes together rely on the principle of requisite variety to provide contrasting and complementary views by gathering insights on the future of safety from many international academics.

It addresses the consequences of job transformation linked to technological developments, digitalization, unfavourable demographics and the lack of attractiveness of some high-risk industrial sectors, today and in the near future.The first part of the brief highlights the questions:What about the collective dimension of skills, skills acquired outside the professional sphere, or the longitudinal perspective of skills development?Why do we sometimes encounter a “learning wall,” a situation in which the training and mentoring needs of newcomers exceed the capacity for skills transfer from experienced employees?What are the impacts of digital transformation on the dynamics of work groups?The contributors investigate aspects of these topics that are rarely studied or even considered.The rest of the brief explores various solutions that can be considered to meet the skills challenge in a constantly evolving world. This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.This book investigates why, despite more and more resources devoted to safety training, expectations are not entirely met, particularly in the industrial sectors that have already achieved a high safety level. It not only reflects the most precious viewpoints of experts from different disciplines, different countries, with experiences in various industrial fields at the cutting edge of theories and practices in terms of safety, professionalization and their relationships. It also consolidates the positioning of the Foundation for an Industrial Safety Culture, highlighting what is currently considered at stake in terms of safety training, taking into account the system of constraints the different stakeholders are submitted to. It reports some success stories as well as elements which could explain the observed plateau in terms of outcome. It identifies some levers for evolution for at-risk industry and outlines a possibleresearch agenda to go further with experimental solutions.
