The documents include letters, reports of various Committees and Commissions, and statements made to arrive at independent conclusions. The first chapter provides an overview of Punjab in various facets Cultural, Economic. Educational and Industrial, etc. In the second chapter a review of birth of Sikhism along with brief sketch of the Ten Gurus is given. Nine chapters provide documents. A brief description of all the elections is provided in Chapter 19 with details of 1992 elections. A biographical sketch of prominent Akali leaders in Chapter 20 would help to understand their psyche. Chronology of events since 1819 is intended to enable the readers to have a quick view of events and persons. Significant details of all elections with a focus on 1992 elections provide enough data. Bibliography including more than 1500 entries may prove useful to readers who intend to go deeper in the matter.

Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are becoming increasingly important in the field of development. NGOs are a very important link between people at the grassroots, civil society and the state. They are diverse both in terms of organisational form, structure and culture and in terms of the issues they cover. Their involvement is not only seen in the implementation of governmental programmes but also in the process of formulation of public policies, and even in the enforcement of social legislation. The purpose of this book is to explore the efforts of non-governmental organisations in combating the global HIV/AIDS crisis. Despite of the depth of literature already in existence concerning the benefits and effectiveness of NGOs in the health field, research in developing and evaluating the full potential and effectiveness of the transfer of HIV prevention intervention models from the research arena to NGOs in developing countries with high HIV incidence is still in its infancy. NGOs working in tandem with international, national and local public health organisations will allow HIV prevention research advances to better benefit the global fight against HIV/ AIDS. This book is a modest attempt to discuss all these issues. It intends to focus on NGO, Globalization and Tribes in India and abroad. The case studies of various NGOs reflect the initiatives, programme execution strategies, successes and challenges faced by them in combating HIV/AIDS.

The book attempts to study the demand for the creation of Uttarakhand State in the historical perspective of integration of princely States and formation and reorganisation of States and Union Territories. Section-I provides the profile of the proposed Uttarakhand state. Section-II indicates the backgrounders to the demand for the formation of Uttarakhand/Uttaranchal. The city of Calcutta, with its three million inhabitants, is a part of India''s largest conurbation, Greater Calcutta, which has a population of some seven million. As a result of immigration from the rural areas of West Bengal and from other parts of India, as well as of massive influxes of refugees after the partition of Bengal in 1947 and the creation of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Calcutta has had to grapple with particularly acute problems of urbanisation and employment, including a rate of unemployment estimated at about 15 per cent of the labour force in 1971 These problems are penetratingly discussed, with a wealth of supporting statistical and other evidence, in this study. The author explains some of the difficulties that exist. Especially revealing is his analysis of the varied composition of Calcutta''s population and of the attitudes of different sections of it towards particular types of employment. Of special interest, too, is his argument that development of Calcutta''s rural hinterland by modern argicultural methods can not only stem the drift from the surrounding countryside to the city but also increase opportunities for employment in Calcutta''s already well developed engineering industries by creating a demand for agricultural equipment. This is the first of a proposed collection of ILO case studies of urbanisation and employment in selected cities in developing countries. The World Employment Programme (WEP) was launched by the International Labour Organisation in 1969, as the ILO''s main contribution to the International Development Strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade. The means of action adopted by the WEP have included” the following : —short-term high-level advisory missions ; —longer-term national or regional employment teams; and —a wide-ranging research programme. Through these activities the ILO has been able to help national decision-makers to reshape their policies and plans with the aim of eradicating mass poverty and unemployment. A landmark in the development of the WEP was the World Employment Conference of 1976, which proclaimed inter alia that “strategies and national development plans should include as a priority objective the promotion of employment and the satisfaction of the basic needs of each country''s population”. The Declaration of Principles and Programme of Action adopted by the Conference have become the cornerstone of WEP technical assistance and research activities during the closing years of the Second Development Decade.
