Ordet “statskupp” associerar nog de flesta med ett plötsligt, våldsamt maktövertagande, med stridsvagnar runt regeringsbyggnader, arresteringar, utrensningar av dissidenter, övertagande av mediekanaler och så vidare. Men så måste det inte alltid gå till. Kuppmakarna kan också tillskansa sig (totalitär) makt utan våldsmedel, på helt laglig väg, med folks samtycke eller t o m entusiasm — även i en demokrati. Det kan finnas många “existentiella” hot (terrorism, miljöförstöring, klimathot, flyktingkris, pandemier) som vi behöver "räddas" från genom en fastare och mer centraliserad styrning. Herraväldet behöver inte heller initieras i ett slag, det kan smygas på oss gradvis. Trots att tecknen hela tiden finns där är det få som väljer att se dem — om bara kuppen förberetts noga så att kuppmakarna får brett gehör genom att träda fram som “räddarna i nöden” eller för att det inte tycks finnas några alternativ. För att lyckas med kuppen krävs ett målmedvetet långsiktigt arbete, en väloljad propagandaapparat och att man väntar på rätt tillfälle. När kuppen väl äger rum kan dock maktövertagandet ske ganska snabbt. När medborgarna väl upptäcker vad som skett kan det vara för sent att göra något åt det. Om så sker i ett enskilt land är det illa nog, när det sker på överstatlig nivå så finns det ingenstans att fly och ingen att söka hjälp från.
