With its insightful portrayals of her protagonist's inner life, Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho was a hugely influential work of early Gothic horror. This Penguin Classics edition is edited with an introduction and notes by Jacqueline Howard.Emily St Aubert lives with her loving, enlightened parents in exquisitely happy rural isolation. But when she is tragically orphaned, the beautiful young woman is thrown on the mercy of her heartless aunt's sinister new husband. The villainous Signor Montoni has designs upon his wife's fortune, and that of her niece, and imprisons them in the gloomy medieval castle Udolpho. Separated from her beloved Valancourt, Emily must cope with torments of wild imaginings and terrors, as ghostly omens and attempts upon her virtue and life threaten to overwhelm her. One of the most popular novels of its time, The Mysteries of Udolpho continues to grip readers with its vivid characters, its sublime Alpine settings and its dramatic sense of suspense and danger. In her introduction, Jacqueline Howard discusses the novel's huge success when it was first published, its place as a groundbreaking work of the Gothic genre, and Radcliffe's imaginative use of history, poetry, landscape and the supernatural. This edition also includes further reading, a chronology, and notes.Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was the leading exponent of Gothic fiction. During her lifetime she published five novels including A Sicilian Romance (1790), The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) and The Italian (1797), as well as a collection of European travel writings. Her novels were immensely popular, and much imitated. If you enjoyed The Mysteries of Udolpho, you might like Edgar Allen Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Writings, also available in Penguin Classics.

This is the first full-length study of Gothic to be written from the perspective of Bakhtinian theory.Dr Howard uses Bakhtin's concepts of heteroglossia and dialogism in specific historical analyses of key works of the genre. Her discussions of Ann Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho, Matthew Lewis's The Monk, Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein demonstrate that the discursive ambiguity of these novels is not inherently subversive, but that the political force of particular discourses is contingent upon their interaction with other discourses in the reading process. This position enables the author to intervene in feminist discussions of Gothic, which have claimed it as a specifically female genre. Dr Howard suggests a way in which feminists can appropriate Bakhtin to make politically effective readings, while acknowledging that these readings do not exhaust the novels' possibilities of meaning and reception.Drawing on the most up-to-date debates in literary theory, this is a sophisticated and scholarly analysis of a genre that has consistently challenged literary criticism.

The goal of this book is to introduce Gods Spiritual Fruit to children. In the process, it seemed like a good way to share knowledge about a selection of tropical fruit through art form. Most of the fruit was new to me, before I lived in The Virgin Islands for a few years. I hope childrenwill learn about spiritual fruit-the Godly characteristics that are combined into one fruit, Gods fruit. The tropical fruit they will be presented on the pages are not to be connected to the Godly attributes given. My prayer is that we adults teach children as we demonstrate the nature of God in our daily walk of being fruitful. According to the New Living Translation of scripture, when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I hope this book will encourage children to apply the attributes found here and also see how good the fruit of God is. Included on the pages are some tropical fruit that you may have never noticed in your local grocery store. Perhaps you have seen the fruit but never tasted it. This was my situation, until I lived in the Caribbean for a while. I learned that tropical fruit is closer to the equator and sunshine therefore; tropical fruit is more potent with vitamins. I did not realize what I was missing until I tasted the unfamiliar fruit. Hopefully, you will search for the different fruit in your local grocery or local cultural food store, or while you visit a Caribbean Island. Enjoy.
