The chapters in this edited volume explore the sociolinguistic implications of orthographic and scriptural practices in a diverse range of communicative contexts, ranging from schoolrooms to internet discussion boards. The focus is on the way that scriptural practices both index and constitute social hierarchies, identities and relationships and in some cases, become the focus for public language ideological debates. Capitalizing on the now robust body of literature on orthographic choice and debate in sociolinguistics and anthropological linguistics, the volume addresses a number of cross-cutting themes that connect orthographic practices to areas of contemporary interest in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. These themes include: the different social implications of self vs. other representation and the permeability of the personal/social and the public/private; how scriptural practices ("inscription") serve as sites for social discipline; the historical and intertextual frameworks for the meaning potentials of orthographic choice (relating to issues of genre and style); and writing as a broader semiotic field: the visual and esthetic dimensions of texts and metalinguistic "play" in spelling and its ambiguous implications for writer stance.

This is the first volume to focus on the role of media in processes of linguistic change, one of the most contested issues in contemporary sociolinguistics. Its 17 chapters and five section commentaries present cutting-edge research from variationist and interactional sociolinguistics, media linguistics, language ideology research, and minority language studies. The volume advances our understanding of linguistic change in a mediatized world in three ways. First, it introduces the notions of sociolinguistic change and mediatization to create a broader theoretical framing than the one offered by ‘the media’ and ‘language change’. Second, it takes the discussion beyond the notions of ‘influence’ and ‘effect’ and the binary distinction of ‘media’ vs. ‘community language’. Third, it examines the relation of sociolinguistic change and mediatization and from five complementary viewpoints: media influence on linguistic structure; media engagement in interaction; change in mass and new media language; language-ideological change; and the role of media for minority languages. Bringing these strands of sociolinguistic scholarship together, this volume examines their shared references and common lines of thinking.

Ausgehend von den kleinsten Elementen des graphischen Inventars modelliert der Sammelband die soziale und situative Ausdifferenzierung digitaler Schriftlichkeit im integrativen Dialog zwischen schrift- und soziolinguistischen Ansätzen. Erkenntnisleitend ist dabei die These, dass der situierte Umgang von Schreiber/innen mit Mitteln und Möglichkeiten des graphischen Inventars – etwa Graphemvarianten, Interpunktions- und Bildzeichen – ausschlaggebend für die Entwicklung sozial gebundener Schreibstile in privaten, öffentlichen und professionellen Kommunikationskontexten ist. Empirische Fallstudien untersuchen digitales Schreiben hinsichtlich seiner sozialen und situativen Varianz, der Bindung dieser Varianz in interaktionale Kommunikationszusammenhänge und der metakommunikativen Reflexion durch schreibende und lesende Akteur/innen. Der Sammelband legt mit dieser Bündelung aktueller linguistischer Online-Forschung einen multiperspektivischen Zugang vor, der sprachliche Strukturen und soziale Bewertungen digitaler Schriftlichkeit gleichermaßen in den Blick nimmt.
