The Authoritative Guide to Building Service-Oriented Solutions with Microsoft .NET Technologies and the Windows Azure Cloud Computing Platform

In SOA with .NET and Windows Azure, top Microsoft technology experts team up with Thomas Erl to explore service-oriented computing with Microsoft’s latest .NET service technologies and Windows Azure innovations.

The authors provide comprehensive documentation of on-premise and cloud-based modern service technology advancements within the Microsoft platform and further show how these technologies have increased the potential for applying and realizing service-orientation practices and goals.

Specifically, the book delves into Microsoft enterprise technologies, such as:

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) Windows Azure Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) Windows Azure AppFabric BizTalk Server Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)

...as well as industry service mediums, including WS-* and REST, and many related service industry standards and technologies.

The book steps through common SOA design patterns and service-orientation principles, along with numerous code-level examples that further detail various technology architectures and implementations.

Public law in the UK and EU has undergone seismic changes over the last forty years: development and membership of the EU, the Human Rights Act, devolution, the fostering of public law expertise within the judiciary, the globalization of public law, and the increased interaction between the academy, judiciary, barristers, public interest groups, and legislatures have transformed the public law landscape. Commentators spend much time at the frontiers of the subject, responding rapidly to new developments and providing guidance to scholars, legislators, and judges for future directions. In these circumstances, there is rarely a chance to reflect upon the implications of these changes for the fundamentals of public law and how those fundamentals relate to one another. In this collection, leading figures in UK and EU public law address this lacuna. Inspired by the depth, scope, and ambition of the work of Paul Craig, Professor of English Law at Oxford University, the focus of this collection is upon exploring and reflecting upon six fundamentals of public law and the interrelationship between them: legislation, case law, theory, institutions, process, and constitutions.

The Covid-19 pandemic brought about both the most serious public health crisis as well as, for many states, the most profound public interventions in individual liberties in the last century. Comparing Covid Laws: A Critical Global Survey examines the evidence of how fifty-three countries from around the world fared at providing an efficacious response within a framework respecting the rule of law, rights, and democratic government. The book draws primarily on data gathered within the Lex-Atlas: Covid-19 (LAC19) project, a worldwide collaboration of jurists that produced the fifty-three detailed and structurally identical country reports published in The Oxford Compendium of National Legal Responses to Covid-19. This volume contains the considered critical judgments of the editorial committee of the Compendium. Over the course of twelve chapters, the text examines a wide range of topics including; the use of emergency powers to address the health crisis, the role of courts, the impact on women's rights, on privacy, on workers and on the right to protest. It also discusses how pandemic responses unfolded in particular ways in cities, federal countries and authoritarian settings.Editors Jeff King and Octávio Luiz Motta Ferraz, as well as the contributors, were motivated by the belief, defended in the introduction of the book, that a good pandemic response is not simply one that achieves better outcomes in terms of morbidity and mortality, a topic that dominated discussions throughout the health crisis. A good pandemic response, they argue, is also one that pursues these goals in a manner that respects democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

Countries that now contemplate constitutional reform often grapple with the question of whether to constitutionalise social rights. This book presents an argument for why, under the right conditions, doing so can be a good way to advance social justice. In making such a case, the author considers the nature of the social minimum, the role of courts among other institutions, the empirical record of judicial impact, and the role of constitutional text. He argues, however, that when enforcing such rights, judges ought to adopt a theory of judicial restraint structured around four principles: democratic legitimacy, polycentricity, expertise and flexibility. These four principles, when taken collectively, commend an incrementalist approach to adjudication. The book combines theoretical, doctrinal, empirical and comparative analysis, and is written to be accessible to lawyers, social scientists, political theorists and human rights advocates.

According to the doctrine of odious debt, loans which are knowingly provided to subjugate or defraud the population of a debtor state are not legally binding against that state under international law. Breaking with widespread scepticism, this groundbreaking book reaffirms the original doctrine through a meticulous and definitive examination of state practice and legal history. It restates the doctrine by introducing a new classification of odious debts and defines 'odiousness' by reference to the current, much more determinate and litigated framework of existing public international law. Acknowledging that much of sovereign debt is now governed by the private law of New York and England, Jeff King explores how 'odious debts' in international law should also be regarded as contrary to public policy in private law. This book is essential reading for practising lawyers, scholars, and development and human rights workers.

Deliberative democratic theory emphasises the importance of informed and reflective discussion and persuasion in political decision-making. The theory has important implications for constitutionalism - and vice versa - as constitutional laws increasingly shape and constrain political decisions. The full range of these implications has not been explored in the political and constitutional literatures to date. This unique Handbook establishes the parameters of the field of deliberative constitutionalism, which bridges deliberative democracy with constitutional theory and practice. Drawing on contributions from world-leading authors, this volume will serve as the international reference point on deliberation as a foundational value in constitutional law, and will be an indispensable resource for scholars, students and practitioners interested in the vital and complex links between democratic deliberation and constitutionalism.
