Ministeriet för statssäkerhet, allmänt känt som Stasi, var Östtysklands säkerhets- och underrättelsetjänst. År 1980 hade organisation vuxit till den största underrättelseverksamheten i världen, räknat per capita, och omfattade en rad olika funktioner relaterade till säkerhet, övervakning och förtryck. På samma gång övergripande och detaljerat berättas här historien om Stasi, en fruktad men också högst professionell underrättelseverksamhet, från rötterna efter andra världskrigets slut till det officiella inrättandet 1950 och den formella nedläggningen 1990. Författaren undersöker diktaturens mekanismer och hur det dagliga livet i DDR påverkades av den omfattande övervakningen och misstänksamheten. Boken har blivit något av ett standardverk och översatts till ett flertal språk.
