De senaste årtiondena har det civila samhällets betydelse kommit att betonas alltmer, vid sidan av staten och näringslivet. Det gäller såväl vid akuta kriser som för exempelvis välfärdsfrågor.

Civilsamhällesvetenskap är en introduktion till det svenska civilsamhället såsom det ser ut i dag – liksom till den forskning som bedrivs på området vid svenska lärosäten. Boken presenterar ämnet genom tre teman som utforskar civilsamhället ur olika perspektiv – både historiskt och i nutid.

Det första temat handlar om vad det svenska civilsamhället är. Här beskrivs olika sätt att förstå begreppet civilsamhälle och liknande termer samt de teorier som används för att förklara dem. Det andra temat tar upp vad som görs i det civila samhället. Här beskrivs aktiviteter inom området, inklusive religion, filantropi och krisberedskap. Det tredje temat handlar om betydelsen av det civila samhället och hur olika företeelser i civilsamhället kan tolkas och sorteras.

Boken är relevant för utbildning inom civilsamhällesvetenskap, socialt arbete, statsvetenskap och sociologi, men också för kurser inom och för offentlig förvaltning, biståndsorganisationer, föreningsliv och verksamheter inom civilsamhället.

This volume focusses on the interplay of civic engagement and institutionalised politics and its role in both the erosion and retrieval of intermediate capabilities and procedures. Rather than discussing democracy as a relationship between citizens as individual voters and state power, the book studies the relationship between citizens engaged in or through organisations, movements and networks in civil society, and their impact in the context of institutionalised politics, be that through representative institutions and political parties or participation in administrative governance. The aim of this volume is to renew the scholarly discussion on the prospects of liberal democracy by looking for opportunities to curb antagonisms and instead strengthen intermediary capabilities.

The book will therefore be of interest to students in relevant disciplines as political science, civil society research, sociology, and research on social movements.

Religion is considered a key predictor of volunteering: the more religious people are, the more likely they are to volunteer. This positive association enjoys significant support in current research; in fact, it could be considered the ‘default perspective’ on the relationship between both phenomena. In this book, the authors claim that, although the dominant approach is legitimate and essential, it nonetheless falls short in grasping the full complexity of the interaction between religion and volunteering. It needs to be recognized that there are tensions between religion and volunteering, and that these tensions are intensifying as a result of the changing meaning and role of religion in society. Therefore, the central aim and contribution of this book is to demonstrate that the relationship between religion and volunteering is not univocal but differentiated, ambiguous and sometimes provocative. By introducing the reader to a much wider landscape of perspectives, this volume offers a richer, more complex and variable understanding. Apart from the established positive causality, the authors examine tensions between religion and volunteering from the perspective of religious obligation, religious change, processes of secularization and notions of post-secularity. They further explore how actions that are considered altruistic, politically neutral and motivated by religious beliefs can be used for political reasons. This volume opens up the field to new perspectives on religious actors and on how religion and volunteering are enacted outside Western liberal and Christian societies. It emphasizes interdisciplinary perspectives, including theology, philosophy, sociology, political science, anthropology and architecture.
