Bachelor Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,0, University of Hull, language: English, abstract: Being a relatively dynamic and one of the biggest of its sort within the European Union, the Toys and Games Industry in the United Kingdom is attractive for many foreign toy manufacturers. Especially the market sector of the traditional toys, which will be defined later, seems to be very auspicious from a general point of view. To what extent this general view corresponds with the reality will be examined on the basis of German toy manufactures and needs to be analysed critically. Hence, the research objective of this work is to figure out what opportunities but also what sorts of threats toy manufacturers from Germany could be faced with when entering the British market. This, however, needs several questions to be answered. Terms like market value, market growth rates but also other factors like the influence of the toy firms environment and consumers attitude towards the industry must be explained which will be done through a secondary data-based overview of the industry in chapter two. Having introduced to several considered research approaches, the choice of the used methodology, its application and special research highlights in chapter three, the analysis s findings will be illustrated in the fourth part of this study. These results will be consumer-based in order to get a better overview about the market itself and to being able to give more efficient recommendations to German toy companies considering breaking into the UK market. The final answer of the research objective mentioned above and further recommendations will be content of chapter five. The last chapter of the essay then tries to draw a conclusion and will clarify whether the targeted research objective has been achieved and outline weaknesses within the used methodology and their potential avoidance in future research projects.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 2,0, University of Hull, course: BA Management Course work in Ethics & Management, language: English, abstract: When talking about the main stakeholders in this case, you can keep to Donaldson's and Preston's model which shows different types (see fig. 1). A stakeholder generally is "e;defined as 'those groups who are vital to the survival and success of the corporation' and as 'any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of the organization's objectives'"e; (Boatright, 2003, 390). Crane and Matten, however, take competitors as main stakeholders into account as well (Crane and Matten, 2004), which completes the main stakeholder network within this case of BMW and Rover. [...]

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Hull, course: STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT, language: English, abstract: Influenced by a growing number of acting companies, the world of nowadays business gets more and more integrated and enlaced with an increasing level of both national and global competition. Hence, gaining advantage over main rivals within a certain industry gets more important and makes many managers of modern-day companies thinking about ways to achieve this benefit. Whereas a lot of management members tend to focus on obvious solutions like cost reduction or promotional activities for instance, there are only a few so far who concentrate also on their firm's mission as primary key to success. Mission, described as the "e;fundamental, unique purpose that sets"e; a certain organisation "e;apart from other firms of its type and that identifies the scope of its operations in products and in market terms"e; (Pearce, 1981), can act as an effective tool to achieve success if it is used and structured correctly. According to Campbell, however, managing this important purpose "e;is still a relatively uncharted area of management"e; and a lot of managers seem to not understand the "e;nature and importance of mission while others fail to consider it at all"e; (Campbell and Yeung, 2002, 284). Even if there are different opinions about the meaning of mission, many authors of management textbooks are of the same opinion that companies should include statements of their raison d'etre, their reason of existence, in the corporate planning process. This process, seen as "e;an identifiable flow of information through interrelated stages of analysis directed towards the achievement of an objective"e; (Pearce, 1981) is a dynamic system as companies often face incessant environment changes. Especially since budget-orientated planning mechanisms or forecast-based methods are seen to be insufficient to ascertain long-term survival and prosperity of corporations, it is vital that they conduct efficient strategic planning (Bradford et al., 2004). Regarding the process and the position of mission within it, you find several authors who advocate the position right at the beginning of Strategic Management whereas there are also theorists who see mission as a subsequent part or even as an output of it. This subject matter will be discussed in the next chapter followed by the topic of the role played by missions within the planning process of organisations. [...]

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Hull, language: English, abstract: The risk term used within the Environmental Management is a mixture between both the individually perceived and the quantifiable term of risk mentioned above. Whereas the latter includes mainly risks regarding economic objectives such as profitability and high sales figures, the first also focuses on non-economic such as corporate image (ibid). It should be stated that you find a lot of literature that differentiates between environmental and ecological terms meaning that environmental risks are those "e;to human health from exposures in the environment at large"e; (Calow, 1998, 2) and ecological ones only those that could harm populations and non-human communities (ibid).

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Economic Geography, grade: 1,0, University of Hull, language: English, abstract: With increased globalisation in the last years, more and more old cities get deindustrialized whereas so called Eurocities are growing to urban centres of importance. Several impacts on those cities like economical and social changes make them special centres for the particular country and provide them with a functional primacy in comparison to other national and international cities. Hence, it is not just terms like population and growth that make cities become big but also other reasons that act as basis for urban transformation processes which are worth indicating in this work. However, and very important for analysing a metropolis, is the fact that increasing globalisation led to an enlargement of the cruising range of a city towards the developing hinterlands as the "e;globalization has had dramatic effects on the working of urban systems"e; (Cochrane and Jonas, 1999, 145). This work will focus on the Mediteranean city of Barcelona, the centre of the industrialization and both political and social developmenst in contemporary Spain. To what extent the city can be seen as a model for urban transformation and to what extent the enormous costs for developing an efficient urban infrastructure in conjunction with growing shortages of available budgets (McCarthy & Danta, 2003) apply to it will be discussed in the following chapters. Hence, Barcelona will be classified in the global structure of world cities in the next chapter before the four main dimensions of change will be illustrated and discussed in part three of this work. Finally, the whole transformation of the city will be evaluated including some major benefts but also present and future challenges Barcelona is confronted with.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Regional Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Hull, course: Free elective course work What makes Berlin a so-called 'world city'?, language: English, abstract: Within the last centuries, the whole planet stood out by several phases of population growth. Due to that exponential growth in general and the fact that people tend to settle down in bigger urban areas, it is also due to historic and especially economic developments. Hence, the agglomerations in big cities meant and still mean for particular countries special centres, which are characterised by demographic and functional primacy in comparison to other national and international cities. However, and very important for analysing a metropolis, is the fact that the increasing globalisation led to an enlargement of the cruising range of a city towards the developing hinterlands as the "e;globalization has had dramatic effects on the working of urban systems"e; (Cochrane and Jonas, 1999, 145). Characteristics of such cities, which are of high significance for concerned countries and the global world, have been discussed differently by several authors and associations in the past and some of them will be mentioned in this work. To what extent Berlin can be seen as a so-called world city, requires answering several questions. First of all it is vital to define the term "e;world city"e; in order to be able to rank special cities like Berlin in the entire network of global cities. Secondly, it is important to find out, whether Berlin is nowadays, in comparison to previous periods, more or less globally important. Thirdly, there is the question of what sets Berlin apart from other European and international urban centres. Is it its position as the German capital, its importance as economical place or are there any historic and cultural features that make the city a global one? Also, the capital in its size according to population, its growth and its density and the area is important to look at because this statistical data is very useful to measure cities like Berlin and compare it with other global players within the city network. Finally, taking all the answers of the set questions into consideration, there will be a conclusion which explains whether Berlin can be regarded as a global city and which describes the future challenges the German capital will have to face if it wants to maintain its potential position as one of the leading cities in Europe.
