This book is relevant both to those who are in the process of preparing an application for an HEA fellowship and to those who are preparing assignments they might be producing for a PG Cert (HE) programme. The book explains the dimensions of practice in detail and offers readers suggestions for ways in which they might engage with particular aspects of the UK PSF at the end of each section and thus evidence the quality of their teaching practice. Each section also offers suggestions on ways to develop teaching as related to the themes.
Its distinctive features include:
Linking explicitly to the UK PSF (UK Professional Standards Framework) and offering practical advice to those making a fellowship application. Integrating this practical element with some of the wider debates about the purpose of higher educationIncorporating a thread of student engagement throughout the book, including students'' own perspectives on the themes of the book.Not only will the book support academics following an accreditation route, the book will also be a useful companion text on taught courses since the UK PSF is the overarching framework for people working in HE in a teaching capacity. Whether you are working in higher education or working in college based higher education then this is the book for you.

Crime control is in crisis. Not only have levels of crime risen but, more important, crime is increasingly regarded as a normal aspect of the social and economic system rather than disruption or deviance. The blurring boundaries between the criminal and the normal are evident in a number of areas from the activities of multinational corporations to the life of the inner city.
In this book, John Lea develops a broad historical and sociological overview relating the rise and fall of effective crime control to different types of social structures. It traces the process of modernisation and industrialisation from the eighteenth to the mid twentieth centuries which established the social preconditions for effective control and management of criminality. In the early years of the present century it is clear that these preconditions are now being progressively undermined as industrial society undergoes profound changes in its direction of development. The result is traced through a variety of types of criminality and the progressive debilitation of existing institutions and processes of crime control.
A major feature of this book is its wide scope and imaginative application of historical and theoretical perspectives on modernisation and capitalist social development to the contemporary problems of controlling a wide variety of crime. It represents a significant contribution to the ability of criminology and the sociology of crime to confront the dilemmas and controversies of the twenty first century.

Do you ever wonder whether colleges and universities are really awash with trivial concerns about the use of language or whether they are actually trying to address serious concerns about discrimination and harassment?
Have you ever wanted to get to the bottom of what all the fuss is about?
This book is the first major study of political correctness in post compulsory education to be published in the UK. For readers in the UK unfamiliar with the nature of the controversies in US college campuses this book offers a comprehensive assessment of the key themes, including who and what was behind key campaigns. For readers in the US unfamiliar with how this cultural export has faired in the UK this book looks at the significant similarities and differences in the ways that the phrase has been used in both societies.
Apart from addressing the roots of political correctness the book seeks to show how the phrase has helped to complicate the traditional boundaries between those on the political Left and those on the political Right. The book also demonstrates in clear terms how the phrase is integral to understanding key themes in cultural theory, such as postmodernism and identity politics.
This book is intended to be of interest to a number of readers:
Teachers working in colleges and universities;
Teacher educators and student teachers working on programmes of initial teacher education;
Students studying undergraduate programmes in comparative politics and/or sociology and cultural studies
Finally, the book will seek to capture the reflections of prominent academics and educationalists bon both sides of the Atlantic, who have worked in environments where the phrase has impinged on aspects of their work over the last twenty five years.
If you think that `political correctness’ simply amounts to what jokes you are allowed to tell in a classroom, hopefully this book will challenge you to think again.

Privatising Justice takes a broad historical view of the role of the private sector in the British state, from private policing and mercenaries in the eighteenth century to the modern rise of the private security industry in armed conflict, policing and the penal system.
The development of the welfare state is seen as central to the decline of what the authors call ''old privatisation''. Its succession by neoliberalism has created the ground for the resurgence of the private sector. The growth of private military, policing and penal systems is located within the broader global changes brought about by neoliberalism and the dystopian future that it portends.
The book is a powerful petition for the reversal of the increasing privatisation of the state and the neoliberalism that underlies it.
