That our fellow members of Chorley, having been wholly and entirely thrown out of employment by the dispute now pending between the cardroom operatives of that locality and their employers, this meeting begs most respectfully to recommend the case of those connected with this society to the kind and humane consideration of their fellow members throughout the district, and to request that they will spare no exertions on their behalf, but obtain for them all the assistance in their power. The following state of employment was submitted to the meeting:--Of course, even if the above return be correct, it is only an approximate guide to the state of employment, because of the great diminution of operatives in the district. Agents came from the United States during the crisis and sought out hands for weaving and spinning; and, having made engagements with them, paid their passage fees to America. But as these would all go by ordinary passenger vessels they would probably not be reckoned as emigrants. Nevertheless, the fact remains that a larger number than any government measure would have been likely to provide for as emigrants to the colonies, did manage by some means at home or abroad to provide for themselves and their families, and thus relieved both the poor-law guardians and the various committees from a very heavy extra charge upon their funds-and their care. DECREASE OF INDIGENCE. 217 The maximum pressure upon the relief committees was reached early in December, 1862, but, as the tide had turned before the end of the month, the highest number chargeable at any one time is nowhere shown.

This concise and interpretative book digs under the surface events of the Wars of the Roses to explore the underlying dynamics of a typical civil war. Beginning with a demonstration of why the well-worn storylines of the Wars are so misleading, it moves on to expose the pressure for reform that animated the conflict and helped to shape its outcomes. It continues by looking at the logics of division and the reasons why the Wars, once started, were so hard to resolve. It concludes by returning to debates long discussed by historians: the role of the economy in the conflict, and the interaction between English affairs and the politics of the British Isles and the near continent. Throughout, a central concern is to emphasise the fluidity and uncertainty of these civil wars: once authority broke down, anything could happen.

This volume, the product of a ten-year international project, brings together specialists in late medieval England and France to explore the multiple mechanisms by which monarchs exercised their power in the final centuries of the Middle Ages. Collaborative chapters, mostly co-written by experts on each kingdom, cover topics ranging from courts, military networks and public finance; office, justice and the men of the church; to political representation, petitioning, cultural conceptions of political society; and the role of those excluded from formal involvement in politics. Today, nostalgia for the youthful exuberance engendered by the 'Fizzie' has resulted in many ex-owners wanting to recreate their pride and joy._x000B_ Most FS1E ‘s have not endured the test of time well, and very few good original examples exist. There are, however, plenty of restorable machines around, and this book guides the do-it-yourself restorer through the process, from the minefield of initially finding a machine to restore, to the potential pitfalls of a first restoration. _x000B_The bikes featured and photographed for the book include a seriously neglected 1974 machine, a part restored 1976 model – of dubious type, and a 1975 DX model which arrived as a pile of bits.
