An intellectual biography of the seventeenth-century masterwork that set down the laws of motion and universal gravitation and ushered in modern physicsLong regarded as one of the most important works in the history of science, Isaac Newton's Principia laid the mathematical foundations of classical mechanics, planetary motion, and the laws of gravity. Jed Buchwald and Mordechai Feingold trace the long, wandering path by which these groundbreaking ideas took shapebeginning with the brilliant insights of a newly minted Cambridge BA and culminating in the publication of Newton's magnum opus in 1687.Drawing on fresh perspectives from Newton's manuscripts and related documents, Buchwald and Feingold situate him firmly within the vibrant scientific milieu of mid-seventeenth-century Cambridge. They explore the interactions with mentors and other contemporaries, emphasizing Newton's distinctive approach to linking motion with the emerging, new mathematics of the era. What develops is a portrait of a restless young scholar, prone to diving deep into a subject only to lose interest, until a letter, a conversation, or a visit would rekindle his interest. For nearly two decades prior to Edmond Halley's pivotal visit in 1684, Newton engaged only sporadically with celestial mechanics. In a narrative of fits and starts, Buchwald and Feingold show how, inspired or assisted by figures such as Isaac Barrow, Robert Hooke, John Flamsteed, and Halley, Newton gradually refined his ideas into what would become one of the most revolutionary books ever written.

Isaac Newton's Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended, published in 1728, one year after the great man's death, unleashed a storm of controversy. And for good reason. The book presents a drastically revised timeline for ancient civilizations, contracting Greek history by five hundred years and Egypt's by a millennium. Newton and the Origin of Civilization tells the story of how one of the most celebrated figures in the history of mathematics, optics, and mechanics came to apply his unique ways of thinking to problems of history, theology, and mythology, and of how his radical ideas produced an uproar that reverberated in Europe's learned circles throughout the eighteenth century and beyond. Jed Buchwald and Mordechai Feingold reveal the manner in which Newton strove for nearly half a century to rectify universal history by reading ancient texts through the lens of astronomy, and to create a tight theoretical system for interpreting the evolution of civilization on the basis of population dynamics. It was during Newton's earliest years at Cambridge that he developed the core of his singular method for generating and working with trustworthy knowledge, which he applied to his study of the past with the same rigor he brought to his work in physics and mathematics. Drawing extensively on Newton's unpublished papers and a host of other primary sources, Buchwald and Feingold reconcile Isaac Newton the rational scientist with Newton the natural philosopher, alchemist, theologian, and chronologist of ancient history.

This issue of History of Universities, Volume XXXII / 1-2, contains the customary mix of learned articles and book reviews which makes this publication such an indispensable tool for the historian of higher education. Guest edited by Professor John Watts, this volume focuses on the history of Corpus Christi College, Oxford.Corpus Christi College, Oxford was founded in 1517 to advance humanistic learning in the service of God. This collection of essays by some of the leading historians of late medieval and early modern England takes the early history of the College as a starting point to explore the intellectual, social, religious, political, and cultural trends of the era of Renaissance and Reformation. Ranging from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth, and taking in the study of Greek and Hebrew; the practices of antiquarianism, charity, and divine worship; the experience of music, punishment, and the built environment; the networks that connected the college to London and the government; and the interactions of scholars with royal policy on religion, these fifteen essays and three commentaries aim to expose the multiple perspectives from which an early modern college can be viewed and understood. The relationship between ''Renaissance'' and ''Reformation'', and the social and cultural realities that accompanied these familiar concepts, form one central theme in the papers; the relationship between religious or educational institutions and the state form another. Corpus Christi itself emerges as less innovative than its historic reputation as the first collegium trilingue might suggest, but it becomes the gateway to a richer appreciation of the overlapping worlds of learning, religion and public life in a time of rapid change.
