Dass Dantes Werk bis in die Gegenwart hinein eine besondere Anziehungskraft ausübt, belegen zahlreiche Bearbeitungen für die Bühne. Doch auch im Bereich des Comics und der Buchillustration zeigt sich - wie aktuelle Beispiele verdeutlichen - eine breit gestreute Auseinandersetzung unterschiedlicher Künstler mit der Divina Commedia. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt des Bandes bilden die Beiträge zu früheren Rezeptionsphasen, wobei der (Musik-)Dramatik besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird. Daneben wird der Faszination nachgegangen, die Dante auf herausragende Vertreter der neueren europäischen Literatur ausübte.
