In the noise of the debate about the EU, it is rare for fundamental questions to be asked. For example, for what purposes should we have international institutions at all? Does the EU meet those purposes and, if not, is reform possible? This book considers these questions. An international team of renowned authors looks at each area of economic policy in which the EU has an interest, as well as at the governing structures of the EU, and asks what, if anything, the EU should be doing. In most cases, this is then compared with the status quo and against the possibility of Brexit in order to help the reader make a judgement, in each policy area, about which would be the best direction for Britain to take. As well as providing a fine contribution to the Brexit debate, the authors of this book provide a framework for evaluating the results of renegotiation together with a long-term programme for reform. The usefulness of this timely book will long outlive the referendum debate. The book asks – and answers – the fundamental questions that are rarely considered by the political classes.

The British National Health Service remains the sacred cow of British politics - any criticism is considered beyond the pale, guaranteed to trigger angry responses and accusations of bad faith. This book argues that the NHS should not be insulated from reasoned debate. In terms of health outcomes, it is one of the worst systems in the developed world, well behind those of other high-income countries. The NHS does achieve universal access to healthcare, but so do the health systems in every other developed country (with the exception of the US). Britain is far from being the only country where access to healthcare does not depend on an individual's ability to pay. Author Kristian Niemietz draws on a wealth of international evidence to develop a vision for a universal healthcare system based on consumer sovereignty, freedom of choice, competition and pluralism. His roadmap for reform charts a path from the status quo to a more desirable and effective alternative.

Socialism is strangely impervious to refutation by real-world experience. Over the past hundred years, there have been more than two dozen attempts to build a socialist society, from the Soviet Union to Maoist China to Venezuela. All of them have ended in varying degrees of failure. But, according to socialism's adherents, that is only because none of these experiments were "e;real socialism"e;. This book documents the history of this, by now, standard response. It shows how the claim of fake socialism is only ever made after the event. As long as a socialist project is in its prime, almost nobody claims that it is not real socialism. On the contrary, virtually every socialist project in history has gone through a honeymoon period, during which it was enthusiastically praised by prominent Western intellectuals. It was only when their failures became too obvious to deny that they got retroactively reclassified as "e;not real socialism"e;.

Why did the West become rich? Was it the product of institutions, culture, and economic policies? Or were foreign expansion, imperialist exploitation and the slave trade the keys to prosperity? In this book, Kristian Niemietz takes the reader beyond the ‘Culture War’ debates around the legacy of the British Empire, and looks at the economics of imperialism. By examining the empirical work of modern historians of colonialism, as well as the views of contemporary figures ranging from Adam Smith to Karl Marx, Niemietz explores a debate which has raged for three centuries and is only growing more contentious. Drawing on data from various European colonial empires, Niemietz casts doubt on the claim – popular among both 19th-century imperialists and modern-day progressives – that empire was a crucial factor in the West’s rise to prosperity. Instead, he shows that – its immorality aside – Western colonialism was simply bad economics. Far from being a story of plunder leading to sustained growth, the story of empire is an all too familiar tale of vested interests using the state to secure private benefits while leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill.

Britain has a growth problem. From the 1950s to the early 2000s, the UK experienced levels of economic growth which allowed it to double in prosperity every 30 years. However, in the last 20 years, the motor of British growth has dramatically slowed. As a result, 18-year-olds today find themselves in a country that is barely any better off than when they were born. In this volume, experts from the UK and around the world outline why the British economy has spent the last two decades in a state of stagnation, and what can be done to prevent us slipping into a third. Touching on areas ranging from banks to Brexit, from energy to infrastructure, and from housing to tax, each author presents unique and compelling analysis of what can and can’t be blamed for Britain’s relative economic decline. In the process, they take the reader through years of policy failure and missed opportunities from politicians on the left, right and centre. This is a depressing but essential read for anyone who hopes to understand Britain’s economy and how it was broken.
