This book examines the transformations in home lives arising in later life and resulting from global migrations. It provides insight into the ways in which contemporary demographic processes of aging and migration shape the meaning, experience and making of home for those in older age. Chapters explore how home is negotiated in relation to possibilities for return to the "homeland," family networks, aging and health, care cultures and belonging. The book deliberately crosses emerging sub-fields in transnationalism studies by offering case studies on aging labour migrants, retirement migrants, and return migrants, as well as older people affected by the movement of others including family members and migrant care workers. The diversity of people’s experiences of home in later life is fully explored and the impact of social class, gender, and nationality, as well as the corporeal dimensions of older age, are all in evidence.

Deficiencies in old age care are some of the most pressing human rights concerns in mature welfare states. This book radically challenges the ethics of viewing care as a tradeable commodity and introduces a novel framework for understanding and analysing social care through the concept of ailment. Providing examples from the British and Finnish welfare states, it demonstrates how ailment shapes societies from the micro to the macro level. Addressing the marketisation and financialisation of care, the authors bring to light increasing inequalities in care. This book argues that ailment is part of human life and society, and therefore the politics of care should begin with a politics of ailment.

Työttömän aika ei ole vapaa-aikaa eikä työaikaa - se on sinnittelyä, joka syö voimat.Ainutlaatuiseen kirjoitusaineistoon perustuvassa teoksessa ääneen pääsevät työttömät itse. Miltä tuntuu menettää työnsä tai hakea töitä tuloksetta vuodesta toiseen? Vakituista työpaikkaa on yhä vaikeampi saada, ja kovassa kilpailussa moni korkeasti koulutettukin jää ilman työtä. Samalla työttömyyttä yritetään torjua pakottamalla työttömät hakemaan sellaisiakin töitä, jotka eivät työnhakijalle sovellu. Erityisesti luovan työn tekijöiden eteen kasataan esteitä.Passiivinen ei saisi olla, mutta vääränlainen oma-aloitteisuus voi viedä oikeuden tukiin ja karenssi katkaista toimeentulon. Rankaisevien työttömyystoimien rattaissa osa työttömistä masentuu ja menettää aloitekykynsä. Pakkoaktivointi passivoi.Työttömyys sattuu kyseenalaistaa käsitykset työttömistä laiskoina työn välttelijöinä. Se kuvaa, millaisia ristiriitaisia vaatimuksia työttömyysturvajärjestelmä työttömille asettaa ja miten ne vaikuttavat itsetuntoon, arkeen ja tulevaisuudennäkymiin.
