Scholarship of the past forty years on the fourth-century Trinitarian controversies has been suspicious of narratives that speak of a well-defined, monolithic, and unchanging theological parties, whether Arians or Nicenes. Against such a narrative, such scholarship has emphasized the development of multiple interrelated positions within theological alliances which exhibit significant diversity among themselves while at the same time being unified in certain fundamental tenets. Each of these traditions of Trinitarian theology emerged in different historical, theological, and polemical contexts in response to the wide variety of different impulses that shaped it. This is especially true for those theologians called "pro-Nicenes" in recent scholarship. This volume provides scholars and students with resources for studying variety among Nicene theologians in the second half of the fourth century. It presents dual-language editions of three lesser-known but seminal Nicene theological texts that are not currently available in English: Phoebadius of Agen's Against the Arians, Apollinarius of Laodicea's The Detailed Confession of the Faith, and Theodore of Mopsuestia's Debate with the Macedonians. Each text has an extensive introduction that situates the text historically and theologically. These three texts, which are different in genre, in language of original composition or preservation, and in theological focus, help us understand the complex diversity of Nicene theology in the fourth century in greater depth.

Augustine of Hippo (354-430) strongly influenced western theology, but he has often been accused of over-emphasizing the unity of God to the detriment of the Trinity. In Augustine and the Trinity, Lewis Ayres offers a new treatment of this important figure, demonstrating how Augustine's writings offer one of the most sophisticated early theologies of the Trinity developed after the Council of Nicaea (325). The Intellectual World of Late-Antique Christianity explores new perspectives on early Christian epistemology in relation to the changing discourses, institutions, and material culture of late antiquity. Early Christian modes of knowing and ordering knowledge involved complex processes of appropriation, reproduction, and reconfiguration of Jewish and classical epistemologies. This helped Christians develop cultures of interpretation and argument as textually oriented religious communities within the Roman Empire and beyond. Ayres examines the relationship between early Christian thought and Hellenic philosophical traditions by considering the extent to which fundamental Christian beliefs were formulated in a Hellenic context, questioning Fr Georges Florovsky's claim of "Hellenism" being "the perennial category and pattern of Christian thought and life." The author notes "The idea that Christianity underwent a "Hellenization" in its first few centuries is an idea long espoused, and equally long questioned, most astutely on the grounds that the term is used with great imprecision. We can justify use of the term, but only if we define it with some care. Here we take the term Hellenization to refer to the spread of Greek culture which began long before, but significantly accelerated after the rise of Alexander the Great's empire. This process involved the spread of language, educational and economic practices, structures of societal organization, religion, philosophy and art. We can give no clear terminus to this process, simply because it was a process that occurred in different ways in different places, reached different ends, and then intersected with a process that we might term "Romanization" which occurred through much of the near east as Roman influence came to be felt. The late Roman Empire in East and West, even in the many centuries where only the Eastern Empire survived, shows the complex interrelationship between the processes of Hellenization and Romanization. The tentative manner in which we use the term Hellenization does not mean that it is useless or can be simply ignored; but we should be both attentive to how we are using it in different contexts (temporal and geographical), and particularly attentive to the complex and confused history of the term among theologians.

The study of the growth of early Christian intellectual life is of perennial interest to scholars. This volume advances discussion by exploring ways in which Christian writers in the second century did not so much draw on Hellenistic intellectual traditions and models, as they were inevitably embedded in those traditions. The volume contains papers from a seminar in Rome in 2016 that explored the nature and activity of the emergent Christian intellectual between the late first century and the early third century. The papers show that Hellenistic scholarly cultures were the milieu within which Christian modes of thinking developed. At the same time the essays show how Christian thinkers made use of the cultures of which they were part in distinctive ways, adapting existing traditions because of Christian beliefs and needs. The figures studied include Papias from the early part of the second-century, Tatian, Irenaeus, and Clement of Alexandria from the later second century. One paper on Eusebius of Caesarea explores the Christian adaptation of Hellenistic scholarly methods of commentary. Christian figures are studied in the light of debates within Classics and Jewish studies.
