This study examines the quality of teaching in higher education. It highlights and analyzes the fundamental issues which influence and underlie the quality of teaching in higher education. In particular, it focuses on students' and tutors' perceived needs, requirements and practices. It also addresses the question of whether, and in what ways, it is possible for teaching in higher education to meet the requirements and to satisfy the needs and preferences of both students and tutors.

Anyone who has spent time in education knows that teachers achieve more when they feel better motivated. The media, policy makers, teachers' unions, and a multitude of others have opinions on how leaders should motivate staff, but what really works? In this timely and constructive book, Linda Evans draws from a wealth of evidence and experience to answer this question. She shares examples drawn from a range of educational settings, from schools for young children to colleges for older students, and shows the contrast between successful and unsuccessful management of teachers' motivation.

Teachers of the youngest children at school were the first to bear the brunt of the policies to change the curriculum after the 1988 Education Act. What did the changes mean to them? How did they perceive their impact upon their work, on standards in the curriculum, on assessment and testing, and on their relationships with pupils and colleagues? How did they cope with stress, long working hours, intrusions into their home lives, and with change imposed from outside? The authors capture in detail the views of thirty infant teachers and compare their subjective perceptions, dominated by a sense of massive change, with the objective record of both continuities and changes in their work.

Transferring the model of reflective practice to research, this book is for those who have found that their initial research training, if they received one, has proved not entirely adequate, or who have found research more complex or intractable than expected. Drawing on examples from her own research and others, Linda Evans shows how, as reflective practitioners, researchers can develop more advanced methods and understandings. It has an international treatment and does not assume familiarity with any one educational system, citing examples of research from different territories.

Academic identity is continually being formed and reformed by the institutional, socio-cultural and political contexts within which academic practitioners operate. In Europe the impact of the 2008 economic crisis and its continuing aftermath accounts for many of these changes, but the diverse cultures and histories of different regions are also significant factors, influencing how institutions adapt and resist, and how identities are shaped. Academic Identities in Higher Education highlights the multiple influences acting upon academic practitioners and documents some of the ways in which they are positioning themselves in relation to these often competing pressures. At a time when higher education is undergoing huge structural and systemic change there is increasing uncertainty regarding the nature of academic identity. Traditional notions compete with new and emergent ones, which are still in the process of formation and articulation. Academic Identities in Higher Education explores this process of formation and articulation and addresses the question: what does it mean to be an academic in 21st century Europe?

What is the role of a professor? How does someone achieve professorial status? What do non-professorial colleagues think about professors? How do professors themselves perceive their roles? What are the bases of these perceptions, and what are their implications for the professoriate’s evolving role both within the neoliberal university, and in the approaching post-neoliberal era?Professors as Academic Leaders draws on a wealth of data not only to explore what it is to be a professor but also to consider how professors are perceived by others. Linda Evans presents the findings from four studies, with a combined data base of over 2,400 questionnaire responses and over 90 interview transcripts, and discusses their implications for the future development of the UK-based professoriate and academic leadership in higher education. She analyses the concepts of leadership and of professionalism, and illustrates how, in trying to meet people’s expectations of them, professors’ ‘enacted’, professionalism is shaped by the professionalism that others demand of them. Professorship is revealed to be demanding, at times stressful and morale-sapping, and at times exhilarating and rewarding. Linda Evans questions whether universities are making best use of their most senior academics, and proposes ways of refashioning professorship.
