Colonialism in Latin America originated centuries earlier, in the transoceanic adventures from which European modernity itself was born. Coloniality at Large brings together classic and new reflections on the theoretical implications of colonialism in Latin America. By pointing out its particular characteristics, the contributors highlight some of the philosophical and ideological blind spots of contemporary postcolonial theory as they offer a thorough analysis of that theory’s applicability to Latin America’s past and present. We the Barbarians embarks on a careful and exhaustive reading of three of the most prominent authors in the latest wave of Mexican fiction: Yuri Herrera, Fernanda Melchor, and Valeria Luiselli. Originally published in Mexico in December of 2021, the work is divided into three parts that correspond to the analysis of each author’s narrative production. The book analyzes all the literary works published by Herrera, Melchor, and Luiselli from the beginning of their writing careers until 2021, allowing for a diachronic interpretation of their respective narrative projects as well as for comparative approaches to their aesthetic and ideological contours.Characterized by the fragmentation of civil society and the decomposition of the myths that accompanied the consolidation of the modern nation, Mexican visual and literary arts have been exploring a myriad of representational avenues to approach the phenomena of violence, institutional decay, and political instability. We the Barbarians analyzes the ways in which the transformations of national culture intersect with global developments, discussing the insertion of literary works at transnational levels. In the works of the authors studied here, the uses of language reveal the experimental integration of regional idiolects, colloquialisms, slang, and neologisms derived from multiple and diverse cultural registers, including the terminologies of social media. Urban and rural subcultures interplay with traditional currents and with the languages of film, performance, and popular music. Thematically, innovations introduced through the genre of chronicles, science fiction, journalism, and autobiographical writing produce powerful combinations in which "canonical" authors are re-interpreted and re-vitalized for a changing and diversified cultural market.The critical and theoretical approaches used here explore a variety of alternative symbolic representations of topics such as nationalism, community, and affect in times impacted by systemic violence, precariousness, and radical inequality. Moraña's goal is to perceive the negotiations between regional/local imaginaries and global scenarios characterized by the devaluation and re-signification of life, both at individual and at collective levels. Though it uses three authors as its focus, the book seeks to more broadly theorize the question of the relationship between literature and the social in the twenty-first century.

El trabajo de Antonio Cornejo-Polar, a quien este volumen rinde homenaje, alimentó durante varias décadas la reflexión más seria y articulada que se haya producido en Perú sobre la crítica cultural que se vincula a la raíz misma del campo interpretado, a sus más profundas y conflictivas condiciones de existencia y desarrollo histórico. His focused approach to Andean cultural issues became a model of interpretation applicable to multiple aspects of Latin American culture and to different moments in its history. His work on indigenous issues was tireless, generous, tolerant without concessions, rigorous and full of faith in critical and interpretative work, and intellectual strength. He opened a path for all of us to better understand the meaning and commitment of our work and for us to delve into a surprising unknown continent, which he portrayed in all its challenging complexity.

Este volumen se presenta como contribución a la lectura de algunos de los aportes más representativos de los estudios culturales producidos en la actualidad desde/sobre América Latina. Elaborados en distintos contextos académicos y desde perspectivas culturales e ideológicas diversas, los artículos aquí reunidos exponen, por un lado una variedad temática y metodológica que manifiesta los cruces interdisciplinarios que catacterizan hoy en día este campo de estudios. Al mismo tiempo, estos trabajos son también el resultado de apropriaciones teóricas diversas acerca de las complejas relaciones entre cultura, política e história, tal como éstas se vislumbran desde el horizonte de los debates actuales y ante la crisis de los grandes paradigmas que guiaron, hasta hace varias décadas, la crítica de la cultura dentro del campo del latinoamericanismo.La mayoría de los artículos que forman este libro fueron presentados en su versión preliminar en el simposio internacional realizado en la Universidad de Pittsburgh en marzo de 1998. A ellos se suman otras colaboraciones invitadas con posterioridad a formar parte de este proyecto editorial. El objetivo principal de ese simposio fue convocar a investigadores y estudiosos de la cultura latinoamericana para una reflexión colectiva en torno a muchos de los temas que han sido objeto de debate particularmente desde fines de los años ochenta. Additionally, these works are also the result of various theoretical appropriations about the complex relationships between culture, politics and history, as they are glimpsed from the horizon of current debates and in the face of the crisis of the great paradigms that guided, until several decades ago, the critique of culture within the field of Latin Americanism.Most of the articles that make up this book were presented in their preliminary version at the international symposium held at the University of Pittsburgh in March 1998. Other invited contributions were added later to take part in this editorial project. The main objective of this symposium was to convene researchers and scholars of Latin American culture for a collective reflection on many key issues that have been debated, particularly since the late eighties. Highlighted among these issues are those that refer to the relationship between globality and regionalization, the redefinition of the public sphere and the place of intellectuals in the processes of institutionalization and cultural recentralization, multiculturalism, and the placement of 'local knowledge' with respect to cultural models of knowledge generated in 'central', regional or international spaces.

El tema de la violencia es connatural a la historia de América Latina y, por lo mismo, resulta inagotable en cualquiera de sus múltiples manifestaciones materiales y simbólicas, desde los orígenes coloniales hasta la actualidad. A nivel continental, la praxis y el discurso de la violencia pueden perseguirse desde la penetración de la depredación colonizadora con que América Latina es inscrita en el desarollo cultural de Occidente hasta llegar a las más recientes y sutiles formas asumidas por la violencia de Estado, pasando por las instancias de imposición de modelos culturales y económicos que el las distintas épocas impactaron radicalmente las culturas criollas y vernáculas. América Latina ha sufrido así, históricamente, las consecuencias de una violencia fundacional, que la condenara a una posición periférica con respecto a sistemas globales cuyos centros han difundido en sus correspondientes áreas de influencia, la ‘racionalidad’ de su propia reproducción cultural, política y económica. De esta manera, la trama social que resultara de la matriz colonialista registró desde el comienzo las huellas imborrables de la violencia que se manifestara tanto a nivel racial como económico, tanto en lo referido a las políticas de género como en lo relacionado con la distribución geocultural del poder, en todos sus niveles. Las ‘dolorosas repúblicas hispanoamericanas’ de que hablara Martí se han debatido desde entonces contra las formas naturalizadas de la violencia de la exclusión y el autoritarismo, la miseria interna y la depredación imperialista, la penetración cultural las intervenciones políticas, siempre amparadas en la retórica legitimadora que las clases dominantes esgrimieran en cada caso para perpetuar su poder.El presente volúmen que compila trabajos que fueran presentados y discutidos en la Segunda Conferencia Internacional de Estudios Culturales Latinoamericanos que se llevara a cabo en la Universidad de Pittsburgh en marzo del año 2000, tiene como foco principal una articulación específica en torno al tema de la violencia contemporánea: la que analiza los cruces y formas específicas en que la violencia se manifiesta teniendo como escenario principal los centros urbanos de América Latina, y las modalidades a partir de las cuales el fenómeno de la violencia es recogido y re-presentado por los medios de comunicación de masas, tanto como por la cultura popular, el arte, la literatura y otras formas de discurso letras y la ‘alta cultura’.~The theme of violence is natural to the history of Latin America and, therefore, it is endless in any of its multiple material and symbolic manifestations, from its colonial origins to the present. At a continental level, the praxis and discourse of violence can be traced back to the spread of the colonising voracity that conditioned Latin America within the cultural development of the West, followed by the most recent and subtle forms assumed by state violence, including the instances of imposition of cultural and economic models that, at the different times, radically impacted the Creole and vernacular cultures. Thus, Latin America has historically suffered the consequences of a founding violence which condemned it to a peripheral position in relation to global systems which centres have spread in their corresponding areas of influence, the 'rationality' of their own cultural, political and economic replication. In this way, the social fabric resulting from the colonialist matrix has recorded from the beginning the indelible traces of violence that are displayed both at racial and economic levels, both in terms of gender policies and in terms of the geocultural distribution of power, at all levels. The 'painful Spanish-American republics' of which Martí spoke, have since fought against the normalisation of the violence of exclusion and authoritarianism, the internal misery and imperialistic greed, the cultural colonisation and political actions always condoned by a legitimising rhetoric that the ruling classes wielded in every instance to perpetuate their power.This volume, which compiles papers that were presented and discussed at the Second International Conference on Latin American Cultural Studies to be held at the University of Pittsburgh in March 2000, has as its main focus a specific articulation around the topic of contemporary violence: it analyses the intersections and specific ways in which violence presents itself in the urban centres of Latin America as its main scenario, and the modalities from which the phenomenon of violence is recorded and represented by the mass media, as well as popular culture, art, literature and other forms of literary discourse and 'high culture'.

This prestigious magazine succumbed to the barbarity of State violence, increasing the helplessness of a continent that was losing one of its strongest ideological and cultural points of reference.Those who contribute to this book reflect upon Marcha from theoretical horizons already problematized by cultural studies, where critical narratives intersect with approaches to political evaluation, historiographical interest, or sociocultural analysis. Hydrocriticism and Colonialism in Latin America is organized around the critical and theoretical “turn” known as hydro-criticism, an innovative approach to the study of the ways in which bodies of water (oceans, seas, rivers, archipelagos, lakes, etc.) impact the study of history, culture, and society. This volume proposes a hydro-critical approach to issues related to the colonial period. The analysed texts demonstrate not only the presence of water and oceanic trajectories as metaphorical devices, but the inherent implication of navigation, ports, islandic territories, drainage systems, floodings and the like in configuration of collective imaginaries, from colonial times to the present. This book encompasses studies of the decisive role water played in the world view from/about the “New World” since the discovery, both for the monarchy and the church, and the impact of oceanic journeys for the advancement of colonization and slavery. In chapters that combine historical,linguistic, literary and ethnographic approaches, this volume constitutes an attempt to expand the scope and methodology of colonial studies. At the same time, the continuity of maritime perspectives reaches the analysis of contemporary literature, thus demonstrating the importance of this critical paradigm for the study of Caribbean cultures. In this respect, studies particularly illuminate the connection between popular beliefs and oceanic dimensions, as well as on issues of gender and ethnicity.
