Liquid Borders
Migration as Resistance
AvMabel Moraña
Inbunden, Engelska, 2021
2 486 kr
Skickas inom 10-15 vardagar
Liquid Borders provides a timely and critical analysis of the large-scale migration of people across borders, which has sent shockwaves through the global world order in recent years. In this book, internationally recognized scholars and activists from a variety of fields analyze key issues related to diasporic movements, displacements, exiles, "illegal" migrants, border crossings, deportations, maritime ventures, and the militarization of borders from political, economic, and cultural perspectives. Ambitious in scope, with cases stretching from the Mediterranean to Australia, the US/Mexico border, Venezuela, and deterritorialized sectors in Colombia and Central America, the various contributions are unified around the notion of freedom of movement, and the recognition of the need to think differently about ideas of citizenship and sovereignty around the world. Liquid Borders will be of interest to policy makers, and to researchers across the humanities, sociology, area studies, politics, international relations, geography, and of course migration and border studies.

Coloniality at Large
Latin America and the Postcolonial Debate

Postcolonial theory has developed mainly in the U.S. academy, and it has focused chiefly on nineteenth-century and twentieth-century colonization and decolonization processes in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. Colonialism in Latin America originated centuries earlier, in the transoceanic adventures from which European modernity itself was born. Coloniality at Large brings together classic and new reflections on the theoretical implications of colonialism in Latin America. By pointing out its particular characteristics, the contributors highlight some of the philosophical and ideological blind spots of contemporary postcolonial theory as they offer a thorough analysis of that theory’s applicability to Latin America’s past and present. Written by internationally renowned scholars based in Latin America, the United States, and Europe, the essays reflect multiple disciplinary and ideological perspectives. Some are translated into English for the first time. The collection includes theoretical reflections, literary criticism, and historical and ethnographic case studies focused on Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, the Andes, and the Caribbean. Contributors examine the relation of Marxist thought, dependency theory, and liberation theology to Latin Americans’ experience of and resistance to coloniality, and they emphasize the critique of Occidentalism and modernity as central to any understanding of the colonial project. Analyzing the many ways that Latin Americans have resisted imperialism and sought emancipation and sovereignty over several centuries, they delve into topics including violence, identity, otherness, memory, heterogeneity, and language. Contributors also explore Latin American intellectuals’ ambivalence about, or objections to, the “post” in postcolonial; to many, globalization and neoliberalism are the contemporary guises of colonialism in Latin America.Contributors: Arturo Arias, Gordon Brotherston, Santiago Castro-GÓmez, Sara Castro-Klaren, Amaryll Chanady, Fernando Coronil, RomÁn de la Campa, Enrique Dussel, RamÓn Grosfoguel, Russell G. Lines of Flight
Citizenship, Borders, and Migrant Subjectivity

This is an abridged and translated version of Lineas de fuga. Ciudadania, frontera y sujeto migrante, which Moraña published in Spanish with Vervuert / Iberoamericana in 2021.Lines of Flight: Citizenship, Borders, and Migrant Subjectivity offers an incisive, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary approach to the constellation of real-world and philosophical issues related to borders and migration in our global era. Exile, internal displacement, transnational relocation, and diaspora all operate under the conditions imposed by political, economic, and ecological transformations. Restrictions imposed by border regulations, strategies of determent, and discourses of power legitimize the rejection and deportation of migrants based on arguments of national security and degradation of the other. Moraña articulates critical and theoretical positions about the emergence, nature, and significance of borders and migration with particular attention to the challenges posed by racism, criminal activities directed toward migrants, and governmental prosecutions. She explores categories such as citizenship, sovereignty, nationalism, identity, and otherness.
"We, the Barbarians"

We the Barbarians embarks on a careful and exhaustive reading of three of the most prominent authors in the latest wave of Mexican fiction: Yuri Herrera, Fernanda Melchor, and Valeria Luiselli. Originally published in Mexico in December of 2021, the work is divided into three parts that correspond to the analysis of each author’s narrative production. The book analyzes all the literary works published by Herrera, Melchor, and Luiselli from the beginning of their writing careers until 2021, allowing for a diachronic interpretation of their respective narrative projects as well as for comparative approaches to their aesthetic and ideological contours.Characterized by the fragmentation of civil society and the decomposition of the myths that accompanied the consolidation of the modern nation, Mexican visual and literary arts have been exploring a myriad of representational avenues to approach the phenomena of violence, institutional decay, and political instability. We the Barbarians analyzes the ways in which the transformations of national culture intersect with global developments, discussing the insertion of literary works at transnational levels. In the works of the authors studied here, the uses of language reveal the experimental integration of regional idiolects, colloquialisms, slang, and neologisms derived from multiple and diverse cultural registers, including the terminologies of social media. Urban and rural subcultures interplay with traditional currents and with the languages of film, performance, and popular music. Thematically, innovations introduced through the genre of chronicles, science fiction, journalism, and autobiographical writing produce powerful combinations in which "canonical" authors are re-interpreted and re-vitalized for a changing and diversified cultural market. The critical and theoretical approaches used here explore a variety of alternative symbolic representations of topics such as nationalism, community, and affect in times impacted by systemic violence, precariousness, and radical inequality. Moraña's goal is to perceive the negotiations between regional/local imaginaries and global scenarios characterized by the devaluation and re-signification of life, both at individual and at collective levels. Though it uses three authors as its focus, the book seeks to more broadly theorize the question of the relationship between literature and the social in the twenty-first century.

Mapping Diversity in Latin America offers ample critical coverage of recent approaches to the historical study of race and ethnicity in Latin America since the arrival of Spanish and Portuguese colonizers to the present. Bringing together the work of leading scholars, this volume presents readers with a thorough and updated examination of the formation and evolution of ideas surrounding race and ethnicity, social movements, and political processes in Latin America that provides multiple routes for future research on the topic. The book’s nineteen chapters establish the basis for a productive comparative analysis of racial developments in the whole continent to allow for a combination of diachronic and synchronic study of regional processes. Both the scope of the book and the historical and geocultural coverage on these topics are unique in the field of Latin American Studies.Taking an interdisciplinary approach to understanding issues of collective identity, otherness, alterity, and the like, Mapping Diversity in Latin America sheds light on histories that have been traditionally overlooked in texts on race in Latin America, such as the rich history of diasporic Asian, Syrian Lebanese, and Jewish communities, and the more recent emergence of Latinx populations in the United States. The book includes a critical examination of fundamental concepts such as mestizaje, mulataje, creolization, negritud, and blanquitud, as well as critical and theoretical approaches to the study of these issues in postcolonial societies.

Bringing together contributions from top specialists in Hispanic studies - both Peninsular and Latin American - this volume explores a variety of critical issues related to the historical, political, and ideological configuration of the field. Dealing with Hispanism in both Latin America and the United States, the book's multidisciplinary essays range from historical studies of the hegemonic status of Castillian language in Spain and America to the analysis of otherness and the uses of memory and oblivion in various nationalist discourses on both sides of the Atlantic. Wide-ranging though they are, these essays are linked by an understanding of Hispanism as a cultural construction that originates with the conquest of America and assumes different intellectual and political meanings in different periods, from the time of national cultural consolidation, to the era of modernization, to the more recent rise of globalization.

The work of Antonio Cornejo-Polar, to whom this volume pays homage, fueled for several decades the most serious and articulate reflection that has been produced in Peru on cultural criticism that is linked to the very roots of its interpreted field, to its deepest and conflicting conditions of existence and historical development. Cornejo-Polar's work explored Andean culture in the Peruvian region. His focused approach to Andean cultural issues became a model of interpretation applicable to multiple aspects of Latin American culture and to different moments in its history. His work on indigenous issues was tireless, generous, tolerant without concessions, rigorous and full of faith in critical and interpretative work, and intellectual strength. He opened a path for all of us to better understand the meaning and commitment of our work and for us to delve into a surprising unknown continent, which he portrayed in all its challenging complexity.

This volume is presented as an addition to the reading of some of the most representative contributions of cultural studies currently produced from/on Latin America. Developed in different academic contexts and from diverse cultural and ideological perspectives, the articles gathered here present a variety of themes and methods that expose the interdisciplinary crossings that are characteristic of this field of study today. Additionally, these works are also the result of various theoretical appropriations about the complex relationships between culture, politics and history, as they are glimpsed from the horizon of current debates and in the face of the crisis of the great paradigms that guided, until several decades ago, the critique of culture within the field of Latin Americanism. Most of the articles that make up this book were presented in their preliminary version at the international symposium held at the University of Pittsburgh in March 1998. Other invited contributions were added later to take part in this editorial project. The main objective of this symposium was to convene researchers and scholars of Latin American culture for a collective reflection on many key issues that have been debated, particularly since the late eighties. Highlighted among these issues are those that refer to the relationship between globality and regionalization, the redefinition of the public sphere and the place of intellectuals in the processes of institutionalization and cultural recentralization, multiculturalism, and the placement of 'local knowledge' with respect to cultural models of knowledge generated in 'central', regional or international spaces.

The theme of violence is natural to the history of Latin America and, therefore, it is endless in any of its multiple material and symbolic manifestations, from its colonial origins to the present. At a continental level, the praxis and discourse of violence can be traced back to the spread of the colonising voracity that conditioned Latin America within the cultural development of the West, followed by the most recent and subtle forms assumed by state violence, including the instances of imposition of cultural and economic models that, at the different times, radically impacted the Creole and vernacular cultures. Thus, Latin America has historically suffered the consequences of a founding violence which condemned it to a peripheral position in relation to global systems which centres have spread in their corresponding areas of influence, the 'rationality' of their own cultural, political and economic replication. In this way, the social fabric resulting from the colonialist matrix has recorded from the beginning the indelible traces of violence that are displayed both at racial and economic levels, both in terms of gender policies and in terms of the geocultural distribution of power, at all levels. The 'painful Spanish-American republics' of which Martí spoke, have since fought against the normalisation of the violence of exclusion and authoritarianism, the internal misery and imperialistic greed, the cultural colonisation and political actions always condoned by a legitimising rhetoric that the ruling classes wielded in every instance to perpetuate their power. This volume, which compiles papers that were presented and discussed at the Second International Conference on Latin American Cultural Studies to be held at the University of Pittsburgh in March 2000, has as its main focus a specific articulation around the topic of contemporary violence: it analyses the intersections and specific ways in which violence presents itself in the urban centres of Latin America as its main scenario, and the modalities from which the phenomenon of violence is recorded and represented by the mass media, as well as popular culture, art, literature and other forms of literary discourse and 'high culture'.

The colonial woman has been the primary source of ancestral myths, a secondary character in the heroic deeds of the American resistance, an obscure object of desire and of the imaginary projections of the conquistadors that continues to occupy a space largely impenetrable by the Latin American critical and historiographic discourse. The vital and discursive space of the colonial woman was always an area limited and controlled by strategies and a rhetoric that imposed on her specific and unquestionable values and functions destined to confirm and strengthen the established powers. This volume tries to present an image of this woman different from the one offered by the traditional versions of the period that America begins with the discovery of Europe (its advances, missionaries and bureaucrats, its books, its plagues and its myths) and extends to the founding of the national states. The works gathered in this book cover a journey that goes from the first images of women rescued in chronicles, colonial relations and iconographies to those that approach the stages that prepare for Independence. These studies, varied as they are, have the common goal of recovering, through the investigation of documents and textual interpretation, the features that define a social subject always on the run, multifaceted and reticent, which is almost never revealed in a first reading and that lives primarily in the margins and between the lines of masculine discourses.

The weekly magazine Marcha (1939-1974) was a paradigmatic example of the effects that social and political forces can have on collective imaginaries and on the specific cultural practices through which a community expresses itself. Marcha emerged in one of the smallest and most peripheral countries in Latin America to later spread across cultural and ideological borders, opening a space for dialogue and debate to which important players in international culture, politics and the economy contributed. This prestigious magazine succumbed to the barbarity of State violence, increasing the helplessness of a continent that was losing one of its strongest ideological and cultural points of reference. Those who contribute to this book reflect upon Marcha from theoretical horizons already problematized by cultural studies, where critical narratives intersect with approaches to political evaluation, historiographical interest, or sociocultural analysis. The articles collected here respect what was the main intention of this compilation: to show the incidence of Marcha beyond the local, but at the same time without despising the local, since the magazine attended to it conscientiously. Above all, they are concerned with clarifying the terms in which a brave and rigorous dialogue is opened, sustained and closed through the pages of Marcha, where culture was conceived as a collective intellectual adventure, and as a form of imagination and social sensitivity.

El presente volúmen reúne los aportes de estos investigadores como contribución a los debates actuales, insertando en éstos propuestas provocadoras y profundas llamadas a influir de manera certera en la agenda teórica de las próximas décadas.~At the III International Congress of Cultural Studies of the University of Pittsburgh held in March 2002, Fronteras de la modernidad designated the conceptual and historicizing space that brought together a great diversity of researchers who reformulated the premises of cultural studies, humanities and social sciences in recent decades. A particular feature, common in these debates, is the articulation of strategies for the decolonization of thought in the modernidad (modern world), carried out while keeping this concept within the theoretical horizon. The most innovative critical positions today claim the epistemological independence of what used to be called the Latin American 'periphery', using the border and margin metaphors to develop theoretical projects located beyond —or closer to— the normative dichotomies of modernity. This line of inquiry faces the acute crises produced by advanced globalization through a constant critical survey of its analytical and hermeneutical tools. The congress held in Pittsburgh brought together the most renowned and original specialists who articulate the theoretical agenda of cultural studies and social sciences in the field of international Latin Americanism today. The forum included the participation of Renato Ortiz, Nicolás Casullo, Santiago Castro-Gómez, Oscar Guardiola Rivera, Tulio Halperín-Donghi, Bolívar Echevarria, John Kraniauskas, Francine Masiello, Adriana Rodríguez-Pérsico, Sylvia Molloy, Javier Sanjinés, Román de la Campa, José Manuel Valenzuela, Cynthia Steele, Renato Rosaldo, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Jens Andermann, Carlos Pereda, Enrique Dussel, Ernesto Laclau, Jesús Martín-Barbero, Diana Taylor, Carlos Monsiváis and Michael Taussig. This volume brings together the input of these researchers as a contribution to current debates, inserting into them provocative proposals which bound to strongly influence the theoretical agenda of the coming decades.

The study of the multiple articulations that link literary and cultural production with the field of ideologies constitutes, especially in the case of Latin America, a significant angle of exploration and analysis. As an homage to one of the most important representatives of this critical approach, this book brings together articles on literature, culture and politics in different contexts in Spain, Latin America and Brazil. From the Andean case to the Canto al general, from Mariatégui to Che Guevara, from women's literature to theories on ‘the end of history’, this book presents provocative and theoretically updated proposals that are central to contemporary Latin Americanism. These will be essential for those who are focused on the study of the relationship between culture and human rights, testimony, cultural hybridity, modernity, the mixing of national cultures, social identity, collective memory and literary historiography.

Hydrocriticism and Colonialism in Latin America is organized around the critical and theoretical “turn” known as hydro-criticism, an innovative approach to the study of the ways in which bodies of water (oceans, seas, rivers, archipelagos, lakes, etc.) impact the study of history, culture, and society. This volume proposes a hydro-critical approach to issues related to the colonial period. The analysed texts demonstrate not only the presence of water and oceanic trajectories as metaphorical devices, but the inherent implication of navigation, ports, islandic territories, drainage systems, floodings and the like in configuration of collective imaginaries, from colonial times to the present. This book encompasses studies of the decisive role water played in the world view from/about the “New World” since the discovery, both for the monarchy and the church, and the impact of oceanic journeys for the advancement of colonization and slavery. In chapters that combine historical, linguistic, literary and ethnographic approaches, this volume constitutes an attempt to expand the scope and methodology of colonial studies. At the same time, the continuity of maritime perspectives reaches the analysis of contemporary literature, thus demonstrating the importance of this critical paradigm for the study of Caribbean cultures. In this respect, studies particularly illuminate the connection between popular beliefs and oceanic dimensions, as well as on issues of gender and ethnicity.
