As we enter the third decade of the World Wide Web (WWW), the textual revolution has seen a tremendous change in the availability of online information. Finding inf- mation for just about any need has never been more automatic—just a keystroke or mouseclick away. While the digitalization and creation of textual materials continues at light speed, the ability to navigate, mine, or casually browse through documents too numerous to read (or print) lags far behind. What approaches to text mining are available to ef?ciently organize, classify, label, and extract relevant information for today’s information-centric users? What algorithms and software should be used to detect emerging trends from both text streamsandarchives?Thesearejustafewoftheimportantquestionsaddressedatthe Text Mining Workshop held on April 28, 2007, in Minneapolis, MN. This workshop, the ?fth in a series of annual workshops on text mining, was held on the ?nal day of the Seventh SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (April 26–28, 2007). With close to 60 applied mathematicians and computer scientists representing universities, industrial corporations, and government laboratories, the workshop f- tured both invited and contributed talks on important topics such as the application of techniques of machine learning in conjunction with natural language processing, - formation extraction and algebraic/mathematical approaches to computational inf- mation retrieval. In todayís competitive and highly dynamic environment, analyzing data to understand how the business is performing, to predict outcomes and trends, and to improve the effectiveness of business processes underlying business operations has become cri- cal. The traditional approach to reporting is no longer adequate, users now demand easy-to-use intelligent platforms and applications capable of analyzing real-time bu- ness data to provide insight and actionable information at the right time. As a response, the notion of "real-time enterprise" has emerged and is beginning to be recognized in the industry. Gartner defines it as “using up-to-date information, getting rid of delays, and using speed for competitive advantage is what the real-time enterprise is all about. . . Indeed, the goal of the real-time enterprise is to act on events as they happen. ” Although there has been progress in this direction and many com- nies are introducing products toward making this vision a reality, there is still a long way to go. In particular, the whole lifecycle of business intelligence requires new techniques and methodologies capable of dealing with the new requirements imposed by the real-time enterprise.

To enable real-time enterprises, we need fundamental advancements in the science and engineering that underlie intelligent information management including: the management of streaming data; the modeling, analysis and management of unstructured data; along with the integrated use of unstructured, se- structured, and structure data. We need new models and paradigms that raise the level of abstraction used in such critical technologies as ETL, data warehousing, and event and business process modeling.
