Explores cities of exile from different perspectives and presents different methods and sources for exile and urban studies. The essays are written by internationally recognized scholars, and contain a wide range of themes including mapping, oral history, queerness, photography. This book will make a significant contribution to the theory and methodology of research on historical exile, cities and modernities, as well as present multidisciplinary exile research from an urban perspective.With a blend of case studies, and theoretical approaches, it interweaves histories of modernism and exile in different urban environments and focuses on historical dislocations in the first half of the twentieth century, when artistic and urban movements constituted themselves in global exchange. Although this book takes a historical perspective, it is written with an awareness of current flight movements and will make a significant contribution to the theory and methodology of research on exile.The knowledge of previous historical exile experiences is important for the understanding of contemporary flight movements: after all, these are not singular phenomena. Der Titel dieses Sammelbandes – Leave, left, left – wurde inspiriert von Jenny Erpen-becks Roman Gehen, ging, gegangen (2015), mit dem die Autorin auf aktuelle Fluchtbewegungen nach Deutschland reagierte. Überdies verweist die temporale Konjugation des Verbs to leave auf die unterschiedlichen Zeitlichkeiten einer Flucht, die von dem Entschluss zu gehen über die Passage bis zur Ankunft im Zielland reicht. Kommen Geflüchtete in einem Land an, dann wird aus dem leave die Perfektform left, also eine aus Perspektive der vollendeten Gegenwart abgeschlossene Handlung, die in der Vergangenheit liegt. Diese Vergangenheit ist jedoch nicht unbedingt endgültig und kann sich jederzeit wieder ändern, wenn etwa Geflüchtete in ihr Geburtsland zurückkehren oder Migrant*innen zwischen ihrer neuen und alten Heimat pendeln.Flucht und Migration sind also prozesshaft und besitzen eine individuelle Temporalität, die für die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung elementar ist. In einer interdisziplinären Ausrichtung befragt die Publikation das Verhältnis der Künste zur Migration und vice versa: Wie reagieren Musik, bildende Kunst und Theater in Gegenwart und Geschichte auf grenzübergreifende Ortsverlagerungen, auf Dislokation und Transmigration?

The impact of migrating artists on modern artExile and migration played a critical role in the diffusion and development of modernism around the globe, yet have remained largely understudied phenomena within art historiography. Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice, and urban space, this volume brings together contributions by international researchers committed to revising the historiography of modern art. It pays particular attention to metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century. These arrival cities became hubs of artistic activities and transcultural contact zones where ideas circulated, collaborations emerged, and concepts developed. Taking six major cities as a starting point — Bombay (now Mumbai), Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, New York, and Shanghai — the authors explore how urban topographies and landscapes were modified by exiled artists re-establishing their practices in these and other metropolises across the world. Questioning the established canon of Western modernism, Arrival Cities investigates how the migration of artists to different urban spaces impacted their work and the historiography of art. In doing so, it aims to encourage the discussion between scholars from different research fields, such as exile studies, art history, architectural history, design history, urban studies, and history.
