It is generally agreed that, of all the Romance languages, French differs most strongly from its Latin ancestor—but relatively little is known about how exactly this situation came about. The present volume provides fresh leads helping to answer this question, by offering a comprehensive account of the morpho-syntactic changes that took place during the transition from Latin to French,Empirically based on a corpus of Merovingian Latin and Old French texts from ca. 500 until 1250 AD, the quantitative and qualitative analysis covers topics such as the Tense-Aspect-Mood system, quantification, nominal determination, pronouns, subordination, word order, information structure and discourse organisation, while paying special attention to the sociolinguistic properties of each text, as well as to differences between text types and genres.The most innovative feature of the book is that all chapters are co-authored by specialists of Late Latin and of Old French, bringing together the expertise of what have traditionally been two separate research communities. The discussion is informed by the theoretical literature, but not biased towards a particular framework. The book should be of great interest to Latinists and Romanists alike, and, more generally, to historical linguists.

Es verknupft bewahrtes Basiswissen mit neueren theoretischen Ansatzen (u. a. Merkmalsgeometrie, Optimalitatstheorie, Autosegmentale Phonologie) und fuhrt in den Umgang mit der Sprachanalysesoftware Praat ein. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf prosodischen Phanomenen wie Silbe, Akzent, Rhythmus und Intonation. Europaische und amerikanische Varietaten erfahren dabei eine gleichberechtigte Darstellung. Prosody is strongly influenced by situational variation along conceptional parameters, such as the degree of communicative collaboration, the degree of dialogicity, the degree of planning, or the degree of familiarity between partners. Prosodic research, however, still focuses more on decontextualized "prosodic grammars" than on prosodic variation itself. This book, which gathers contributions from the "Prosody and conceptional variation" panel at the Deutscher Romanistentag held in 2017 in Zürich, tackles methodological and theoretical issues of this interplay. Based on empirical analysis of a wide range of communicative situations, the book shows how phonetic, pragmatic, textual, and interactional perspectives can help to better understand how prosodic features and communicative settings are interrelated.

Das Buch gibt Studierenden des Spanischen ein zugängliches Grundlagenwerk zur Lautlehre ihres Studienfachs an die Hand, in dem bewährtes Basiswissen (zu dem auch der Umgang mit der sprach - analysesoftware Praat gehört) mit neueren Theorieentwicklungen (u.a. Merkmalsgeometrie, Autosegmentale Phonologie und Optimalitätstheorie sowie im Bereich der Prosodie das Autosegmental-MetrischeModell der Intonationsforschung und verschiedene Analyseverfahren zum Sprachrhythmus) verknüpft wird.Spanisch wird dabei nicht als homogene Sprache aufgefasst, sondern der europäische Standard (kastilische Normaussprache) wird gleichberechtigt mit anderen Varietäten (v. a. aus Lateinamerika) behandelt. Den romanischen Hintergrund bilden die nachbarsprachen Portugiesisch und Katalanisch, aber auch französisch und Italienisch werden vergleichend herangezogen, während als Kontrastfolie das Deutsche dient. Auf diese Weise ergeben sich vielfältige varietätenlinguistische und sprachvergleichende Einblicke in die lautliche Struktur und Entwicklung des Spanischen.
