From Alexandre Dumas to Raymond Chandler, Martin Green examines adventure stories and their role in spreading the ideology of the modern nation-state.Seven Types of Adventure Tale studies widely read and influential adventure tales of the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries in the respectable literary forms. Some of the authors considered are Dumas, Scott, Defoe, Cooper, Verne, Buchan, Kipling, Twain, and Chandler. These stories, though adapted and copied innumerable times and read in their native languages and in translation throughout the Western world, have been largely neglected by literary theorists. Green offers a way to take the adventure tale seriously by positioning these stories within a new theoretical framework.Green places the tales in seven categories organized according to the type of central character in each story. The first category is the Robinson Crusoe story, which portrays the myth of entrepreneurial capitalism and "modern" or postfeudal politics. This story has appeared in one hundred well-known versions, including The Swiss Family Robinson and Lord of the Flies, since Defoe published his version.The second category is the Three Musketeers story, mythifying the birth of the French state and, by extension, the birth of other nation-states. The third is the Frontiersman story, originally about American history but a powerful myth far beyond U.S. borders. The fourth, the Avenger story, is tied to the myth of an avenging return by Napoleon to France, but more generally to a threat to the bourgeois ruling classes of the nineteenth-century Europe. The fifth is the Wanderer story, which relates to escaping from social discipline but also to spying and disguises and crossing frontiers of all kinds. The sixth, the Saga story, is a revision of the Icelandic and Teutonic sagas and reflects the myth of resurgent Germany after its unification in 1870. And the seventh category, more specific to the twentieth century, is the Hunted Man story, in which an individual hero is pitted against social juggernaut, such as the state, the Mafia, or a giant corporation.Seven Types of Adventure Tale is the second volume of a three-volume study of adventure by Green that began with The Robinson Crusoe Story.

Cranborne Chase, in central southern England, is the area where British field archaeology developed in its modern form. The site of General Pitt Rivers' pioneering excavations in the nineteenth century, Cranborne Chase also provides a microcosm of virtually all the major types of filed monument present in southern England as a whole. Much of the archaeological material has fortuitously survived, offering the fullest chronological cover of any part of the prehistoric British landscape. Martin Green began working in this region in 1968 and was joined by John Barrett and Richard Bradley in 1977 for a fuller programme of survey and excavation that lasted for nearly ten years. In this important study, they apply some of the questions in prehistory to one of the first regions of the country to be studied in such detail. The book is a regional study of long-term change in British prehistory, and contains a unique collection of data. The stories in this volume are in three sections. "Retirement Stories" are about senior citizens, such as a retiree prompted by a college survey to examine his past ("Mr. Maple''s Good Life"), a retiree prompted to think about human connections after a chance meeting with "The Lady from Australia" and a retiree who sees a chance for revenge when the ex-boss who fired him moves next door ("New Neighbors").
"Left-Over Stories" are those I couldn''t fit into Volume I. These include a story telling you how to make "Money", worth the price of the book alone, and a trilogy continuing the story of the young man in "Being in Love" with "Getting Married" and "Struggling On" in the early married years.
The third section has stories written just for fun, which I hope, will be fun to read. There''s a ghost story, a vampire story, a love potion story, a magic ring story and more. In the last story, "Unfinished Business", a writer tries to outwit death.

The Down Farm Landscape (where the author's family has farmed for generations) is one of the most carefully studied areas in Western Europe. Much of this work has been carried out by the author himself - who in 1992 won the Pitt Rivers award for independent archaeology. His work has involved five universities and one of the major field units were recently featured in a BBC 2 'Meet the Ancestors' programme. The farm is part of Cranborne Chase, just south of Salisbury (where, coincidentally, the famous General Pitt Rivers began his pioneering work in the 1880s). It not only contains the Neolithic Dorset Cursus, numerous long barrows and Hambledon Hill, but over the last 30 years henges, shafts, plastered houses, land divisions, enclosures and cemeteries have been identified and excavated. The farm has its own museum and for the book the author provided a unique range of illustrations (including full colour reconstructions).

The author asks how these novelists responded to and expressed in their work the pressure exerted upon all English people by their possession and subsequent loss of the Empire. The intrinsic literary interest of each writer turns out to have something to do with their response to England's plight as an imperialist and post-imperialist power.Dr Green begins with Kipling, who not only talks about the Empire but also expresses the Empire in several indirect ways. A Year in Retirement is a fictionalized memoir covering the year after a 61-year old leaves his civil service job after 27 years. It depicts his experiences in dealing with the question: So youre retired; what do you do now? It shows that some things change in retirement while others dont. It shows that retirement can be a little scary, but that it can also be rewarding. The authors purpose was, first, having published three collections of short stories in each of the past three years, to write a longer piece; and, secondly, to put into it all of the things hes learned about dealing with being retired. As it turned out, this wasnt too much, but he hopes the book will be somewhat instructive as well as entertaining.
The author is still writing short stories; at this time, hes had a little over 200 stories published, most of them in the online magazines he discovered four or five years ago. In addition to A Year in Retirement, hes included in this book 25 short stories that have been published but not collected before.

At the end of 1997, my wife Beverly and myself moved into Del Webbs first Northern California retirement community, Sun City Roseville, just outside of Sacramento. About two years later I was interviewed by someone from the Sun Senior News, a paper mailed to Sun City residents at the start of each month, because Id started a New Yorkers club. When the interviewer found out I was a freelance writer for the Neighbors section of the Sacramento Bee she suggested I write something for the Sun Senior News. I wrote a piece called Observations after Two Years in Sun City, which was printed, then a few more Observations, then it became a monthly feature and is still going on.This book is a collection of ten years of Observations, from 2000 through 2009. As I put it together, I saw that I had gone from columns that were mainly about Sun City to columns on what was going on in the outside world. Observations allowed me to express my opinions on a number of matters. I enjoyed doing them, and hope readers will enjoy reading them.Martin Green is a retiree/free-lance writer living in Roseville, California. Since 2000, Hes been writing for a monthly newspaper, the Sun Senior News, which goes to over 10,000 households in two retirement communities, Sun City Roseville (where he lives) and Sun City Lincoln Hills. He currently does two monthly features, Observations and Favorite Restaurants.
This book is a collection of all, or almost all, of Martins journalistic pieces. It starts with his first story for Suttertown News, about how a water district was coping with a then years-long drought, and ends with a piece he wrote about his father for the Sun Senior News. The stories include profi les of people such as David Freeman, then head of SMUD; two notable writers in Davis, Kim Stanley Robinson and Karen Joy Fowler; a number of artists, musicians and other writers; many active senior citizens, and survivors of Pearl Harbor. They also cover places such as art galleries, restaurants, museums, coffee houses and swim and tennis clubs, and events such as the Elk Grove Strauss Festival, the Folsom rodeo and the first Saturday Night Art Walk.
In addition to his journalism, Martin has had over 200 short stories published in online magazines and has so far self-published three collections of these stories (2006, 2007 and 2008) as well as a longer work, One Year in Retirement (2009) and a collection of his Observations (2010). He has been married to Beverly (a water-color artist) for 46 years, has three sons (David, Michael and Christopher), three grandsons (Mason, Morgan and Logan), one granddaughter (Stephanie) and two cats (Bun-Bun and Shandyman).
