Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: sehr gut (1,0), University of Leipzig (Institut fur Amerikanistik), course: Wilderness and Civilization in American Fiction, language: English, abstract: The writing of this paper was initiated by a seminar on the concepts and implications of civilization and wilderness in American fiction. When Frederick Jackson Turner analyzed the significance of the Frontier in American history, he claimed that the true American character was not influenced by Europe, but built by the constant, strenuous interaction with and the heroically endured hardships of nature's wildness, which presented itself to the pioneers along the frontier line up until 1890, when the frontier was considered officially closed (Turner 1893). Accordingly, nature and wilderness play an important role in American history, character, and literature. Wilderness visualized as trees or the woods in general, symbolizes a lawless place and, thus, not only allowing for the idea of beasts but also of criminals living there. The uncanny in this picture is obvious and allows for mystifications quite a lot. Besides symbolizing a place of evil, wilderness has also been a space for the individual, most evident in the Puritan idea of expelling non-conformist people, sinners, from the community and sending them to exile into the woods. In this regard, Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter and its adulterous protagonist Hester Prynne serve as a perfect example from literature. In this instant it becomes clear, that wilderness and civilization serve as binary oppositions, that have been primarily favored as neatly separated categories in the Puritan thinking. Civilization has been praised as the ideal, refining, and humane state, which can only be realized in the community and its democratic institutions. The missionary thought of bringing civilization to the continent and, thus, taming the wilderness, evoked a new idea: that of Manifest Destiny. Pioneers turn into the chosen people, bringing light into the darkness of the wild continent. The author would like to note that the following pages were attempted to be structured according to those concepts. Trying to do so, however, the subject of the paper, Stewart O Nan s novel A Prayer for the Dying, proved itself to be challenging for such a proceeding. The concepts of civilization and wilderness can be found throughout the novel and to a certain degree can be deconstructed nonetheless, but they present themselves not in an exclusive, absolute, and categorical but rather in a confused and intertwined manner.

Du Bois got inclined to the problem which is presenting itself throughout the history of mankind: the issue of animosity and oppression against certain ethnic groups within society. In W.E.B. Du Bois' case that means in particular America's situation at the end of the 19th century: The Civil War had been fought, the Northern States and so the Yankees had won over the Republican South, and the equalization of America's black minority seemed established. Yet, how was this situation in the US to be changed in a few weeks, months or years that had instituted itself over more than two centuries? Exactly this question seemed most evident to those who were to be profiting from this new contribution to equality throughout the American nation. Even if in his own life this was not as evident as in many others , due to his home area being set in New England rather than in the much more hostile South, he still could feel some sort of inferiority of his family towards other citizens of his home town and had notions of people s differences other than just the color of their skin. W.E.B. Du Bois can be seen as an icon in the course of the fight that had been fought, and in some ways is still being fought today, for the political and social emancipation of the black minority in America. Thus, the importance of his person and his lifelong crusade for equality and social improvements does not have to be questioned. It seems interesting that despite growing up in the rather enlightened environment and society of Great Barrington in terms of race relation and respecting one another disregarding any differences in color, Du Bois was able to evolve as a fighter for the emancipation of his black people in America in such an intense and profound way. Therefore, it appears somewhat contradictory and paradox that in the course of his life and work, as he became more of an international figure, Du Bois was accepted less and less by his contemporaries at home. When he left America to become a citizen of Ghana in 1961, however, he did not do so as a rejection of his countrymen: Returning to the land of his forefathers marked a resolution of many conflicts with which Du Bois had struggled all his life. His mature vision was a reconciliation of the sense of double consciousness or the two warring ideals of being both black and an American that he had written about fifty years earlier...

Throughout the sessions of the seminar it became clear that the need for some public assistance has always existed in the United States. Together with three of my fellow students I prepared a presentation on the Great Depression and the introduction of Social Security during the New Deal. Doing research for our presentation in class I took notice of the enormous pressure under which the Committee on Economic Security, which became the central institution in the drafting process of the novel program, had to work and the great obstacles they had to overcome on their way to the actual passing of "e;their"e; Social Security Act in 1935. Consequently, out of this specific encounter I attempt to discuss two main points in this paper: one is the difficulties and obstacles that needed to be overcome when the Social Security Act was first developed and the second constitutes its introduction to the American public with its particular and distinguished programs. In order to fulfill these tasks, I will start out by giving an overview of the historical background, that of the Great Depression. In this context I will also consider, for instance, public opinion or rather its change in regard to Social Security during the New Deal.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: sehr gut, University of Leipzig (Institut fur Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: This paper on adultery in James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room and Stewart O'Nan's Everyday People and their adulterous characters David and Harold was commenced by a seminar on the representation of adultery in the novel. Even though the discussions in class touched upon various aspects of the crime of infidelity, such as different historical and literary periods or cultural aspects and developments, however, to my understanding it lacked an important facet. Out of convention, probably, adultery was only discussed in the constellation of heterosexual extramarital affairs, that is, either a husband was unfaithful to his wife with another woman, or a wife with another man. Apparently, the awareness of the two novels that I will discuss in this paper and their specific rendering of the issue of adultery contributed to or even nourished my feelings of missing the essential aspect of same-sex adultery. In my research for this paper I realized that my opinion was justified, for homosexual affairs outside of heterosexual marriages have also concerned jurisdiction, legislation, and public opinion on a larger scale and still do. In this paper, however, I will only discuss these aspects marginally, for the focus lies upon the examination of adultery in literature.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Leipzig (Institut fur Amerikanistik), course: Psychoanalysis in Literature, language: English, abstract: This paper is taking interest in Madonna and psychoanalysis, yet it is not supposed to conclude as an analysis of Madonna and her psychic condition as a patient. However, what I am trying to do on the following pages is to detect and employ various concepts of Freud's revolutionary theory (or rather theories) in the context of pop star Madonna and her music videos in particular. Initiated by a seminar on psychoanalysis and literature, this paper tries to portray how influential Freud's findings were and to this day still are, but probably also that the post-Freudian society at times seems to escape into thoroughly explaining matters with the help of their layman understandings and ideas of psychoanalysis. What I am trying to say is that one is tempted to overdo interpretations with the help of psychoanalysis, ignoring the fact that it has limitations as well. I noticed myself, especially, becoming oblivious to that fact when analyzing Madonna. That occurrence, however, exemplifies how prone we are, as post-Freudians, to employ this theory in our thinking, understanding, and interpretation of ideas and concepts; not only in academic spheres, but also in everyday life. I have tried to structure this paper in accordance of the various psychoanalytic concepts that I chose to discuss in regard to Madonna s music videos. However, my intended agenda for this essay proved somewhat incompatible with my findings, which means that quite frequently there was no clear-cut distinction to make between, for instance, the universal prominence of sexuality and the dream and their overall importance in applying psychoanalytic theory on literary texts (in this case on music videos and sequences). Owing to better readability and coherence, however, I still arranged this paper in chapters, pointing out once more that cross-references and repetitions to some extent are indispensable. Since the focus of this paper is on Madonna s music videos, visual representations so to speak, I start out discussing the importance of psychoanalysis and its ramifications for film theory. I have struggled with the equalization of entire films, in which film theory is based, and music videos; yet I have found that these sequences, in a way, tell entire stories as well, and, owing to their limitations in regard to the time frame, are condensed to a much larger extent than are ordinary films, which is reflected in the frequent employment of symbolism and ciphers in music-video composition (This condensation itself implies a close similarity to Freud s comments about the dream-work.) Beginning with general theoretical observations on film theory and psychoanalysis in terms of modes and conventions of perception I will lead to the discussion of the actual contents of Madonna s music videos in regard to at least some of Freud s ideas.
