Der Sammelband enthält insgesamt 17 Beiträge von Archäologen, Historikern und Sprachwissenschaftlern, die sich im Oktober 2006 an der Universität Jena zu einem interdisziplinären Kolloquium getroffen haben, um den Forschungsstand ihrer jeweiligen Disziplin zur frühen thüringischen Geschichte miteinander zu vergleichen. Dabei wurde deutlich, dass die Erkenntnisse der Historiker und der Archäologen in vielerlei Hinsicht nicht miteinander in Einklang zu bringen sind: Die materiellen Hinterlassenschaften, die auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Thüringen gefunden wurden, lassen sich nicht ohne weiteres den frühen Thüringern zuordnen, die in den Schriftquellen begegnen. Lediglich die sprachwissenschaftlichen Beiträge ermöglichten den einen oder anderen Brückenschlag. Insgesamt wurde deutlich, dass Thüringen und seine Bewohner seit der Mitte des 5. Jahrhunderts sehr viel stärker an den Entwicklungen im Norden Europas und in den Anrainerzonen der nachrömischen Welt beteiligt waren, als dies bisher vermutet wurde.
